What kills yucca plants?
In addition to digging up yucca plants, some individuals prefer to chop them down and soak them in herbicide beforehand. To begin, use a saw or pruning shears to remove any foliage and side branches. Note: To avoid unpleasant pricks from the needle-sharp leaves, wear gloves and protective clothing.
Then chop the main trunk down to about a foot (31 cm.) from the ground with an axe or saw. Around the base, drill a succession of 1 to 2 inch (2.5-5 cm) holes. Fill the holes with stump remover or herbicide. This will spread throughout the root system, killing the yucca plant, which can then be dug up and removed from the area.
While getting rid of yucca plants may take numerous efforts, the yucca roots will eventually weaken and die. Patience and vigilance will pay off in the end.
Chemical management should be utilized only as a last resort because organic methods are more environmentally friendly.

Should yucca plants be cut back in the fall?
Yucca filamentosa (Adam’s needle) is the only yucca that has naturalized as far north as Michigan. It is native to the southeast and eastern sections of the United States, but it has made its way to Michigan. We live in near-desert Central Texas, surrounded by yuccas, and it’s still hard to imagine that a yucca can survive in the snow and cold. Pruning Yucca is rarely necessary, with the exception of removing any dead or broken blades. You must have this plant where you want it since digging out the root will (a) not work because they are HUGE, and (b) cause a slew of tiny little plants (often known as “pups”) to sprout all over the place. If you cut the plant off at the base, the plant will simply ensure its life by putting out more small plants. Cutting it off at the base would be a difficult task that would necessitate the use of a chainsaw and a suit of armor. The only trimming required is of the bloom stalk, which should be cut down as close to the ground as possible when it has finished blooming in late summer to keep the plant clean.
Except for the bloom stalk, don’t try to chop off or dig up anything on your yucca unless you have a lot of space to fill in your garden. You probably didn’t understand that when you were informed that the yucca would come back if you chopped it off at the base, that several would come back at the cut-off base, and then next year when you cut those off at the base… and so on. What are your thoughts on having a yucca forest in your backyard?

Yucca plants come in a wide range of types, making them an excellent choice for landscape gardening. Selecting the right yucca for your garden is a matter of temperature, space, and sunshine. They grow from 2 to 30 feet tall and have a range of root systems. Their capacity to survive in the desert is due to their root system’s ability to absorb water.
