Yucca is a bold and dramatic plant with straight angular edges that looks great in modern homes. Plants that are younger and smaller will suit the majority of households.
While the leaves of Y. elephantipes are not particularly pointy, they do have a pointed end, so use caution. The wide sword-shaped leaves are also quite strong; you won’t be able to rip them with your fingers, for example, and while such durable foliage may please claw-happy cat owners, they may prefer to scratch on the bare “trunk.”
If you’re not sure which one you’re looking at, Y. aloifolia has narrow leaves that taper to a sharp point, but Y. elephantipes has larger sword-shaped leaves that arch somewhat. The care requirements are the same regardless of the type you have.
After potting up a Yucca that has been cultivated from a particular “log” or stem, new green growth develops from the top of the stem, and the roots grow out of the bottom and into the soil. It can resemble a little palm tree or, in some situations, a Dragon Tree (Dracaena).
