What does the word “wisteria” in Demon Slayer mean?
Wisteria blooms are introduced in “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba’s” fourth episode, which also emphasizes how potently medicinal they are, particularly as a poison. The scent of the wisteria flower, when concentrated, works wonders to ward off demons. When used on typical, higher-ranking demons, the flower can at least paralyze them. It works especially well against low-ranking demons.
Demons like to stay away from wisteria flowers as much as possible due of the threat the plants pose. This is precisely why the Demon Slayer Corps’ headquarters are surrounded by flowers; it protects them from danger (most of the time). Wisteria is also used to inscribe the ranks of the Demon Slayer Corp members into the hands of demon slayers, therefore the flower’s importance extends farther for them. The flower serves as an effective symbol for the business.
As of this writing (May 2021), only one season of “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba” has been broadcast, but future plotlines in the manga series indicate that wisteria blooms will play a significant role in the mythology as a whole. Fans should be delighted to return to the demon realm sometime in 2021 since there has already been a sequel movie, “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train,” and a second season of the anime has already been confirmed. Be sure to keep some wisteria blooms on hand, though.
Why is Wisteria a threat to the demon?
We learned that wisteria deters demons in a recentish episode of Demon Slayer (uncertain when this will be published). This piqued my interest. I was aware of the name, of course, but the episode made me realize that I was unaware of what wisteria actually is. not to mention why they would make a strong all-around defense. I thus did as I normally do and turned to my trusted friend Google.
The first thing I discovered is that wisteria are incredibly lovely:
Since Quebec’s weather can be rather fickle and only the hardiest plants can survive, I doubt that we see the flower very often. However, as I shall discuss a little later, that might not be be the problem. By entering “wisteria” and “devil” together in the search field, I discovered a second thing: there isn’t a clear connection between the two. More research was required!
In actuality, wisteria is an Asian plant species that belongs to the pea family. Though I believe it has spread to the nearby areas as well, it appears to have its natural origins in China and Japan. It was introduced to Europe and America some time ago, and now various American versions are also successful in the US.
The plant’s traditional meaning comes from Chinese and Japanese civilizations. The flower has also been utilized in Kabuki theater as a symbol of love, sensuality, support, sensitivity, bliss, and tenderness. It is more frequently linked to luck, youth, and births. I suppose all these loving and compassionate relationships may be seen as the opposite of demons, but I’m not sure that’s the whole story.
In reality, the bloom is quite resilient, and individual specimens can survive for hundreds of years. The oldest live one is currently thought to be in Japan and has been extant for more than 1200 years. It is therefore not strange that it is linked to immortality. Although there are trees that outlive flowers much longer, the endurance of flowers is still rather remarkable.
We can draw a few parallels between this and the Demons. I haven’t read the manga, and the anime hasn’t provided us with a lot of information on the demon lore thus far, so I’m just treating them like vampires. mostly because they are killed by the sun, which is typically associated with vampires even though their behavior is very similar to that of zombies. In essence, I’m thinking that demons do not age and do not pass away naturally, but the anime has not explicitly stated this.
Wisteria is also a rather combative plant. You must frequently trim them back when introducing them into new surroundings or else they risk taking over and suffocating the nearby plants.
Thus, rather than being hostile to demons, they are comparable to them in many ways. a persistent and perhaps deadly presence that encroaches on other living things.
In actuality, there is a straightforward canon explanation for demons’ aversion to flowers. You could assume that the fact that Demons want to stay away from them so desperately is because of the plant that can be used to create a poison that is fatal to them. They want to cross the grove so badly that they would rather starve to death on a remote mountain. I don’t think the tale goes any further than that.
But I want to add my headcanon to it since we like to find relevance when there isn’t actually any. Find a tiny reason why the author would have picked that particular flower over the dozens of dangerous plants that were available. Furthermore, I don’t believe the conventional interpretations are enough. Instead, there was a fusion of those symbols and the plant’s organic behavior.
They resemble devils if you consider wisteria as a symbol of rebirth and immortality and add that to their lengthy lifespans and predatory nature. Both prey on others in search of immortality, but one is a sign of impending death, while the other is the promise of brand-new life. The other, which is connected with sunshine, conveys our ideal of freshness and beauty while conjuring images of decay, rot, and gloom. They are conceptually similar to funhouse mirror representations of one another.
Okay, so this might be a bit of a stretch, but I like this interpretation of Wisteria’s role in the Demon Slayer mythos. What do you think of the series, if you guys watch it? In chapter #75, Tanjiro and Inosuke get together on a rooftop in the Entertainment District to talk about where a monster is. Their mission’s supervisor and Sound Hashira, Tengen Uzui, claims he may have put them in danger.
Tengen admits that since last night, he hasn’t heard from Zenitsu. Tanjiro and Inosuke are instructed to abandon the operation for their own protection because there is probably an upper-rank demon in the vicinity. There is little hope that slayers below the rank of Hashira will ever be able to destroy a formidable Rengoku because recently an upper-rank demon was able to do so.
Tanjiro tells Inosuke that because they hold the lowest status, no one can trust them.
The ten ranks of the Demon Slayer Corps are Mizunoto, Mizunoe, Kanoto, Kanoe, Tsuchi-noto, Tsuchi-noe, Hinoto, Hinoe, Kinoto, and Kinoe, in order of lowest to highest.
Tanjiro is informed by Inosuke that they are four from the bottom. They were once known as Mizu-noto, but they are now known as Kanoe. They were given the promotions after passing the final selection test and spending time with Rengoku demon-hunting aboard the Mugen Train.
Inosuke then exemplifies the capacity of a demon slayer to reveal their own rank. Your rank will be displayed anywhere on your skin by reciting a password and flexing. Inosuke demonstrates his rank on his palm while uttering his password.

Is Nezuko protected from the sun?
Overall Capabilities: Nezuko is an extremely potent demon even if she is not one of the Twelve Kizuki. Her most notable characteristics are her remarkable development rate—possibly caused by the significant amount of blood Muzan Kibutsuji gave her when he transformed Nezuko into a demon—and the fact that she doesn’t require human flesh to survive. This was demonstrated in numerous battles throughout the course of the series where she was able to win despite being initially outmatched by her adversaries. She has demonstrated the ability to beat her foes by strengthening her physical prowess, improving her regeneration, or, in emergency cases, creating her own Blood Demon Art.
Nezuko has shown considerable combat prowess and talent in battle despite being a juvenile demon, defeating the Temple Demon or the Swamp Demons. Nezuko’s rapid development also appears to represent Tanjiro’s own remarkable growth rate, as she is capable of competing with Upper Rank demons and taking on members of the Twelve Kizuki in a matter of months. Her capacity to subdue the sun, which has led the Demon King to refer to her as the “chosen demon,” is what distinguishes her from all other demons.
As the “chosen demon,” Nezuko possesses a number of abnormal demonic characteristics that separate her distinct from all other demons. Most importantly, unlike other demons who would have to consume human beings in order to replenish their power, Nezuko can do it continuously. Instead, she relies only on sleep to replenish her strength, despite the fact that doing so would require a significant amount of sleep time. Nezuko also has a remarkable rate of growth, as evidenced by the numerous occasions in which she becomes stronger without any training or human consumption. This capability has been demonstrated to activate even in the midst of combat and with significant power enhancements. The clearest example of this is during her combat with Susamaru, where the Temari demon’s ball assault caused her foot to be blasted off, but after regenerating she was able to confront her in an equal duel kicking the ball and ultimately defeat her.
- Nezuko can go into a berserk state where she takes on a more demonic appearance and transforms into an adult version of herself with vine-like tattoos that surround her body and a single horn sticking out from the right side of her forehead. Nezuko’s physical abilities are significantly improved by this awakened form, and her level of regeneration is also raised to that of the Upper Ranks. When she initially discovered this power during her encounter with Daki, she lost her typical restraint around human blood and had to have Tanjiro sing her a lullaby in order to return to normal. Nezuko is able to exert complete control over this form during the Demon Slayer’s battle with Hantengu, giving her the advantage in combat while retaining her usual serenity and refraining from feeding on humans.
- Sunlight Resistance: During their fight with Upper Rank Four, Hantengu, Nezuko achieved immunity to sunlight, a feat that even the Demon King himself could not do. She is entirely able to walk and move around in the daytime thanks to her immunity to sunlight, which causes Muzan to change his plans in order to hunt and absorb her in order to conquer the sun himself.
Blood Control: Nezuko has demonstrated in her Awakened Form that she has incredible control over her blood in addition to her Blood Demon Art. Nezuko managed to control her dismembered limbs and head as she was about to be cut into bits by Daki by rapidly congealing and hardening the blood gushing from them before the streams could break apart. Using this, she was able to command her limbs to grip Daki’s sashes and stop them. Though she did this with blood-tied, floating limbs, the sashes were stopped in their tracks due to the strength with which she was able to do this action. Through those blood streams, she was able to reconnect all of her limbs, allowing her body to rejuvenate. [14]
Massive Regeneration: Nezuko can heal in a split second thanks to her demon-boosted regenerative talents. She was a somewhat slow regenerator when she initially turned into a demon compared to other demons, and it took her a while to heal slash wounds. But once she was awake, her regeneration power advanced to the point where it was on par with that of the Upper Ranks, enabling her to instantly reattach her entire torso and body parts and grow new limbs and legs. Then, Nezuko’s regeneration outpaced hers, according to Daki.
Extreme Strength: Nezuko has demon-like physical strength that is naturally amplified. She was powerful enough to kick another demon in the head while still a demon at the beginning of the series when she first turned into one. Nezuko even overpowered the Swamp Demon with powerful punches and kicks before giving him a punch that caused him to cough up blood. Nezuko focuses on physical force and uses her legs as her main weapon to kick quickly and powerfully because she lacks any combat experience. Nezuko has also demonstrated the ability to gain strength when it is most needed, as evidenced by the time she strengthened her legs to repel Susamaru’s handballs despite having had her legs severed previously. She was able to hold down the Hantengu clones of Upper Rank Four in her awoken form and kick an Upper Rank demon through the back.
Size Modification: After becoming a demon, Nezuko showed the fundamental capacity to modify the dimensions of her body, including height. When traveling with Tanjiro during the day, she could condense herself into the size of a small child to fit inside a tiny box or a basket and hide from the sun, or she could enlarge herself into a much larger shape to be able to fight demons.
