Does Wisteria Kill Trees

Don’t be deceived by wisteria’s beauty; it can climb onto your trees and damage them. If a wisteria has grown up on one of your trees, cutting it off at the base is the best course of action. A tree may become entangled with wisteria if it climbs.

Why does wisteria cause issues?

With 15-inch trunks, this vine can grow up to 70 feet quickly. Native canopy trees, understory trees, and shrubs may be suffocated or destroyed by this invasive vine’s heavy weight due to its quick growth and intense shade.

This is a particular issue in the warmer Southern states, where this aggressive and quickly proliferating invasive species is destroying native habitats.

As it climbs, the vine tightly wraps around the trees and bushes, eventually girdling and killing them.

Because native ecosystems have been destroyed, the habitat for many insects, birds, butterflies, and other animals has also been destroyed, leaving them without a place to live.

The wisteria tree is invasive, right?

Background In 1916, Chinese wisteria was first made available as an ornamental plant. Despite being weedy and disruptive, it has been widely planted, grown, and is still highly popular in the nursery industry.

Availability and Habitat Chinese wisteria, which is widely distributed in the eastern United States, has been found to be invasive in at least 19 states, ranging from Massachusetts to Texas south to Illinois. Although established vines will survive and propagate in moderate shade, wisteria likes full sun. Vines cling to trees, bushes, and man-made objects. Although it can tolerate a wide range of soil types and moisture levels, it likes deep, loamy soils with good drainage. Common locations for infestations include the edges of forests, the sides of highways, ditches, and right-of-ways.

Ecological Danger The tough, woody vines firmly entwine themselves around the trunks and branches of the host trees and sever the bark, causing death by girdling. On the ground, new vines that grow from seeds or rootstocks produce thickets that smother and shade out native plants and obstruct the growth of natural plant communities. Canopy gaps that result from dying girdled trees allow more light to reach the forest floor. While this might momentarily benefit certain local species, it also encourages wisteria to grow and spread vigorously.

  • Plant: a clockwise-climbing, deciduous, woody twining vine with strong, smooth, gray-brown stems that are dusted with tiny white hairs. The diameter of older plants can reach 15 inches or more.
  • The leaves are complex, alternating, and have 9–11–7–13 leaflets that are egg-shaped with wavy borders and sharply tapering points.
  • Flowers, fruits, and seeds: Prior to the development of leaves, flowering takes place in April. The flowers are lavender to purple, appear in pendulous racemes or clusters 6-8 (up to 12) in long, and mostly open at once. Individual flowers are 0.8-0.9 in. long on 0.6-0.8 in. long stalks (pedicels). The fruits are green to brown velvety seedpods 4-6 in. long, narrowed toward the base with constrictions between the 1-3 flat,
  • Spreads vegetatively by creating stolons, which are above-ground stems that develop shoots and roots at irregular intervals, as well as via seed, which in riparian environments can be transported by water.
  • Look-alikes include the Japanese and American wisterias (Wisteria frutescens), which have leaves that are 7 to 12 inches long, 9 to 15 leaflets that are all the same size, plane margins, tips that are acute to slightly tapering, smooth bright green above, and slightly milky undersides. They bloom in May after the leaves have expanded, with flower clusters that are 4-6 inches long and not particularly pendulous, and individual flowers that are about 3/4 inches long and

Control and Prevention Cut vines to free trees from the weight and girdling caused by modest infestations. Use a systemic pesticide containing glyphosate or triclopyr on the lower cut stem sections. From a seed, new plants may sprout. Long-term planning is necessary (see Control Options).

Are other plants poisoned by wisteria?

Despite the wisteria plant’s attractiveness, it can be harmful to both people and animals. The plant is poisonous in every aspect. However, the seed pods contain higher levels of hazardous substances.

The plant makes seeds in the form of hanging pods. They acquire a velvety feel. The beans are beans inside out. They may therefore appeal to pets and other animals.

A naturally occurring protein is lectin. Certain lectins are completely harmless. In actuality, lectins can be found in practically all foods. However, when ingested in sufficient quantities, some lectin types are poisonous.

The poisonous variety can be found in wisteria. Additionally, they contain the harmful glycoside wisterin. The plant’s bark, pods, and seeds all contain wiserin.

Humans that consume wisteria plant components may have headaches, disorientation, and even internal bleeding. Dogs might also experience the same symptoms.

If using little doses, symptoms are typically not severe. You or your dog could have minor to major digestive issues. However, grave situations can occur. They will need emergency medical attention.

If you choose to cultivate wisteria, be sure to keep an eye on your kids and dogs.

How can wisteria on trees be removed?

These suggestions are aimed for local governments and homeowners who want to begin improving their neighborhood greenspace. Although we have introduced a herbicide option for select species for individuals who are comfortable using them, we always encourage herbicide-free control strategies for each species. These techniques were chosen with consideration for minimizing soil disturbance, minimizing pesticide use, and preventing injury to any potential coexisting species, whether they be plants or animals. All of them can be manually removed if you have the time. If the infestation is really bad or if these suggestions don’t work, we advise that you look into competent expert services.

Chinese Wisteria & Japanese Wisteria

Wisteria is quite challenging to manage. Check out expert control if the infestation is dense.

Cut and Treat

To access sunlight, wisteria climbs tall trees and constricts itself around their trunks. These vines encircle the tree as it spreads outward. Sever vines at the base of trees to halt this. Avoid attempting to pull vines that are out of your grasp down. The vine above the cut will die if you cut it at the base, and it will ultimately dry up and fall off.

Follow the vines to the ground, make a base cut with a handsaw, and then treat with herbicide. To maintain track of what has been treated, we employ a high concentrate (between 20 and 50 percent) glyphosate-based solution with an indicator dye. Make certain to just spray the pesticide on the wooden stem. In order for the herbicide to be absorbed, you must treat the wound within 5 to 10 minutes of it becoming dry. Only stems with a diameter of 0.5 or greater should be treated.

How to Identify Invasive versus Native Wisteria

Wisteria is probably an invasive species if it blooms in the early spring. Because spring is coming early owing to climate change, Japanese and Chinese wisteria (Wisteria floribunda and Wisteria sinensis) may blossom even earlier in April or May. Native to North America, Wisteria frutescens blooms in June and July.

Here are some hints for distinguishing between them:

  • Due to a thick layer of small hairs covering them, the pods of Asian Wisterias have velvety textures. The smooth, hairless pods of the American Wisteria are.
  • While native flowers bloom at the base and move upward on the flower stalk, flowers on Asian variants bloom all at once.
  • While the American wisteria has a more rounded tip, the Japanese and Chinese wisteria have pointy leaf tips.
  • The Chinese and American species both twine in the opposite direction. Clockwise twining of Japanese wisteria.

Magnolia Collection

The lineage of flowering plants that includes magnolias dates back about 95 million years. There are 18 different varieties of magnolias, from flowering to evergreen, in the Atlanta BeltLine Arboretum. When the Atlanta Crackers played baseball at the former Ponce de Leon Park, two unique magnolias were planted right outside the outfield wall. Home runs hit by Babe Ruth and Eddie Matthews were both caught in the magnolia tree’s canopy. In order to preserve this piece of history on the Atlanta BeltLine Arboretum as well as in new parks and baseball fields across Atlanta, we have taken cuttings from these old magnolia trees and grown them into new trees as part of Arboretum experiments.

Oaks

The oak trees on this hillside and across the Arboretum illustrate a variety of Georgian environments, from granite outcrops to bottomland hardwood swamps. 33 of the approximately 90 native oak species in the United States are found in Georgia. On this slope, 33 oak trees are growing, and between them, one stainless steel leaf sculpture represents each tree.

Beech Circle

Beeches, one of the most regal of our natural trees, are a sign of an established forest. Beech trees are essential for animals, despite the fact that it can take them up to 40 years to produce a significant amount of nuts. All different species of birds and mammals, including the red-headed woodpecker, can find food and refuge in beeches. A circle of beech trees known as the “fairy ring” surrounds a granite gathering and outdoor classroom where you can imagine how the beech trees will seem in three, five, and ten years.

Eastside Azalea Collection

Despite being Georgia’s official state wildflower, the natural azalea is rarely employed in landscaping. With more than 300 azaleas on exhibit, the Atlanta BeltLine Arboretum now has the largest native azalea collection available to the general public in the Atlanta area. All 13 of the Georgia’s native azalea species are present in the collection, which features more than 25 different species, cultivars, and variations. This collection concentrates on named cultivars from two series, the Georgia Moon Series and the Sunrise to Sunset Series, that have been chosen for their characteristics such as color, size, bloom time, etc. The Georgia Moon Series will feature fragrant white-blooming native Georgia species, and the Sunrise to Sunset Series will have warm orange, red, and soft yellow native Georgia species that bloom from March through July.

Stumpery Garden

The Stumpery Garden is a horticultural oddity that offers a space for the general people to learn and explore while also showing how trees may be used in attractive ways. Stumpery gardens make use of storm-damaged, dead, fallen, and dead trees as a resource for the garden, offering vital habitat for beetles, amphibians, birds, and small animals like chipmunks. Logs, branches, and pieces of bark are arranged to create walls and arches, and whole logs are turned upside down to reveal their root system. They foster the growth of ferns, lichen, mosses, soft grasses, and trailing plants on and around them.

Does wisteria’s root system spread quickly?

If you go to a garden center and buy a pot of wisteria, it’s probably going to be a Wisteria frutescens, also known as “Amethyst Falls.”

This kind of wisteria originated in the United States, as opposed to other species that are Asian in origin.

Due to its less invasive nature and lack of ongoing trimming requirements, this variety is excellent for novices and small gardens.

Is there any use for wisteria?

(From Mary’s perspective) Wisteria has numerous advantages, but the springtime display of pendulous, fragrant flowers makes them stand out the most. It’s common practice to plant wisteria in gardens, especially in the warm climes of the Southern United States.

It looks quite beautiful as ornaments. Hardy wisteria vines have clusters of hanging blossoms that in mid- to late spring draw butterflies, bees, and other pollinators. They also have dark, glossy foliage. Depending on the species, the pea-like flowers might be bluish-lavender, purple, pink, red-violet, mauve, or white. Keep an eye out for unusual seed pods that follow the blooms.

The wisteria grows quickly. This tenacious climber can scale any substantial building and can grow to lengths of 30 feet (9 meters) or much higher. But keep in mind that this isn’t a vine for a frail fence or trellis, and planting it up against a building is typically not a good choice. Even native wisteria, which is less invasive than Japanese wisteria, has a tendency to be aggressive and has been known to eat through siding or ruin paint.

Growing the vine is simple. Another benefit of planting wisteria is that it is easy to grow and adapts to almost any soil type. Wisteria is further simple to grow from cuttings. Wisteria is a long-lived plant that will provide beauty to the yard for many years after it is established.

The plant improves the soil. Wisteria is a nitrogen-fixing plant, like all other members of the legume family, which enhances soil quality. Prunings create excellent mulch, but make sure the branches are dead before spreading the mulch else you risk getting new vines growing there.

How can the roots of wisteria be stopped from growing?

Pruning wisteria twice a year is the best approach to prevent it from growing out of control. After the flowers have faded in the early to mid-summer and when the shoots from this year’s growth begin to look untidy, the first pruning should be done. The goal is to remove undesired shoots or suckers and to keep new development close to the main vine as follows:

  • Trim fresh growth shoots to a length of 6 inches.
  • Suckers at the roots should be removed.
  • Cut off any sprouts that the vine’s main support structure doesn’t require.

Since flowers only appear on one-year-old growth, this pruning strategy not only keeps the vine in a tight shape but also enables the blooms to be seen the following year.
