I’m fighting tradescantia in a bushy area in a gully in the back of my part, but I’m losing. What do you recommend for a widespread treatment?
A: Tradescantia, also known as wandering willie and wandering jew, is extremely difficult to eradicate since every fragment left behind can reseed. It tolerates most soil types, moist environments, and deep shade. Large, dense mats of its glossy, dark-green leaves hinder native plants from recovering.
Working from the top of the space down and from the margins to the center is advised by Weedbusters. To lessen the need for spraying, rake and roll the matted growth. Use a waste transfer station to dispose of. Beware of dropped pieces as they could spread the infection.

There are 75 different species in the Tradescantia genus, several of which exhibit a “wandering or vining growth habit.
These species have their origins in the Americas, from Argentina in the south to Canada in the north.
In recognition of John Tradescant the Elder and John Tradescant the Younger, the father of taxonomy, Carl Linnaeus, named the genus Tradescantia.
Both men were English explorers, gardeners, and naturalists who designed landscapes for British king Charles I.
The father-and-son duo’s connection to the genus that bears their names is the subject of two different tales.
According to one legend, Tradescant the Elder’s trip to the Americas brought T. virginiana to him as a specimen.
The alternative account is that Tradescant the Younger himself gathered it when visiting Virginia in 1629 and brought it back to England.
Regardless of the circumstances behind the introduction of that perennial from a temperate region to England, this species and others in the genus inherited the Tradescant family name.
This genus, which also includes T. virginiana, contains numerous native species to the US, but those that are grown indoors come from tropical regions of Central and South America.
They thrive in moist soil in woodlands, rainforests, and riparian areas, both in their natural habitat and in locations where they have naturalized.
These delicate evergreen perennials generate thick mats of vegetation with their spreading growth habit and ability to root into the earth from their vines, especially at leaf nodes.
This spreading growth habit results in long, trailing tendrils when cultivated as indoor plants.
These species feature strap-shaped, elliptical, or oval alternating leaves. Some species have different color patterns, while others are a single shade of green or purple.
These plants have fleshy leaves that resemble succulents’ leaves in texture. Those fleshy leaves also show that spiderwort can store water, similar to succulents.
Some kinds of spiderwort have more or less tiny hairs covering their leaves and stems. These hairs can develop into roots as spiderworts spread, much way the hairs on tomato stems can.
Small, three-petalled flowers appear at the stem ends. Based on the species or cultivar, these little flowers can be pink, white, blue, or purple.
Another frequent term for these houseplants is “wandering Jew,” which you may be more familiar with.
That common moniker is no longer acceptable to this author and this publication. Because it carries a lot of baggage, we no longer use that archaic common name.
The phrase “wandering Jew” originally described a folk hero, a Jew who had belittled Jesus (who, I should add, was also Jewish), as he was on his way to be crucified.
According to the legend, this guy was destined to wander the earth until Jesus’ second coming as punishment for his insulting.
Please be aware that this is only a story. not even a narrative from the Bible This folk character first appears in writing around the sixth century.
Even if not all of the legends about the “wandering Jew folk figure” were solely derogatory, they all stem from unfavorable prejudices.
The situation was made worse when, in the 1930s, Nazi propagandists appropriated the persona and used it to paint Jews in a negative light in order to support the Holocaust.
You’ll probably agree with me when I say that this isn’t a stereotype we want to maintain in any manner or a healthy connotation to give this houseplant.
The good news is that this plant now has a smart replacement moniker, the very laid-back-sounding “wandering man.” This new moniker, in my opinion, is appropriate for such a laid-back houseplant.
The “wandering” portion of this term also seems appropriate given that these species can develop such lengthy vines. The term “wandering Willie” is another alternative name for these species. You may even refer to it as “wandering Trad” like the Australians do.
The popular name “spiderwort” was likely inspired by the “web-like threads that grow from the plant’s sap and solidify after stems are broken, according to Richard G. Hawks, Plant Evaluations Manager at the Chicago Botanic Garden.
The term “inch plant,” another frequent name, describes the distance between leaves. Another possible source of inspiration for this name is because, at least to me, these seem to grow an inch per day!
They are excellent houseplants for anyone who want to quickly fill a room with foliage because of their rapid growth habits.
A Note of Caution:
If you are prone to skin problems, you should think about wearing protective gloves when handling some Tradescantia species used as houseplants because they have been known to cause contact dermatitis in certain people.
The ASPCA describes T. fluminensis as harmful to dogs and cats, but it does not provide safety information for all Tradescantia species.

Tradescantia plants are listed as “potential pet-friendly alternatives” in this reference book by authors Michael E. Peterson, DVM, and Patricia A. Talcott, DVM, who also note that no “incriminating data against these species has been uncovered.
Please keep these indoor plants out of the reach of little children and animals if you have them, just to be safe. Additionally, if you don’t want to take any chances with your furry friends or inquisitive children, think about going with a houseplant that has been proven to be harmless.
Tropical Tradescantia species can be cultivated outdoors as annuals or perennials in USDA Hardiness Zones 7b to 12a in addition to being kept as houseplants.
Be informed that spiderwort species can be highly invasive before deciding to use any of them for their ability to cover the ground.
They could be better off as houseplants so you can keep an eye on them and prevent them from becoming out of control.
Alternatively, if you wish to use them outside, keep them safely contained and include them in your container garden.
