Tradescantia nanouk propagation by division
You’ll frequently see that a tradescantia nanouk you purchase has a few distinctly different stems in the soil. even more compact ones I divided mine because it had so many stems! Simply carefully remove the plant from its pot and divide it at the roots to accomplish this. If you need to rip a few roots, don’t worry.
Then, using well-draining soil, plant each in a separate tiny pot. Don’t worry if it doesn’t seem too happy with you for the first couple of weeks. Some plants experience some shock after being divided and replanted.
Tradescantia nanouk propagation by stem
Tradescantia nanouk can also be propagated via stem clippings. This is a wonderful strategy to use if you accidently knock a branch off while trimming your nanouk. I’ve used this method of propagation with purple queen, and it works exactly the same way.
Take a few-inch-long slice of a nanouk stem and remove the bottom leaves to propagate it in water. Place a glass of water inside, being careful to keep the top foliage from submerging. You’ll be able to plant it after you have a strong set of branch fresh roots after a few weeks!
Take the same kind of cutting if you want to propagate nanouk stems without the water-rooting process. Take out the lower leaves. After that, plant the cuttings in a soil that drains well. To help maintain the soil just moist enough, water a little more frequently than you would a typical plant.
This encourages root expansion. Pull back on your water until you can lightly tug on the cuttings but still encounter some resistance. New roots have emerged. Yay.
You can frequently get away with simply clipping a few stems and placing them immediately back into the pot your existing plant resides in because soil propagation is so simple. This encourages a large, bushy plant with new development!
Can tradescantia nanouk be grown in water?
Tradescantia Nanouk can be multiplied, and it’s incredibly simple to do so. Your Nanouk can grow in water or directly in soil. Both are described below.
You’ll notice lines along the stem of this plant just below the leaves that indicate where a node is, just in case you forgot, a node is where leaves and roots emerge out of the stem. When you divide a plant, new roots will emerge from nodes.
Your Nanouk can even survive permanently in water, however its growth rate will be slower.
How to Propagate Tradescantia Nanouk in Water
- Cut a few leafy stems below a node with a pair of clean, sharp scissors. Leave a few inches of the stem exposed by removing any of the lower-most leaves.
- The cutting should be placed in a jar of room-temperature water with at least one node—and ideally several—beneath the surface. Verify that the water is clear of any leaves.
- Place the jar in an area that gets plenty of bright, indirect light.
- You should notice little roots emerging after about a week. As the water appears to be getting dirty, replace it once a week or so, and top it off when the level drops.
- Before putting the cutting into soil, I prefer to wait until the roots are about two to three inches long. Your cutting should be ready to transfer in a few weeks, but it might take longer.
- Once your cutting has been potted, start treating it like a normal plant by giving it a good watering.
How to Propagate Tradescantia Nanouk in Soil
Your Tradescantia Nanouk cutting can be grown just as easily in soil as it can in water.
- Don’t bury any of the leaves; instead, plant your cutting into damp soil with at least one node below the surface.
- As the roots grow, keep the soil damp but not wet.
- Put it somewhere with good, filtered light.
- You can also cover the top of the pot with a transparent plastic bag to assist keep the humidity where it should be. Simply take off the bag every day for a few minutes to let some fresh air in.
- You can test your cutting after a few weeks by giving it a VERY little tug. If you encounter resistance, a root system has formed, and you can proceed as you would with any other plant.
Can tradescantia be propagated in water?
One of the simplest houseplants to grow, tradescantia is a great contender for water propagation. Cutting a piece of a plant and sticking it in a glass container of water so you can watch it grow roots is really all there is to water propagation. In general, watching the new roots develop is quick, simple, and incredibly enjoyable.
You must utilize a clipping of the entire stem while growing tradescantia in water (unlike some plants which will grow new roots directly from a leaf stalk). Here is a step-by-step instruction guide with pictures so you can see exactly what to do.
Plant choice:
In these pictures, I’m utilizing a Tradescantia albiflora ‘Nanouk’. It is a fantastic tradescantia with variegated leaves that are sugary pink and green. Of course, they all grow quickly! But all tradescantias, including my other favorite Tradescantia zebrina, will grow successfully using this method of propagation.
If you have multiple plants, pick one that is strong, pest- and disease-free, and has a lot of new growth.
Time of year:
Auxins, the plant hormones that aid in promoting new growth, are often present in higher concentrations in the spring, which is the greatest time of year to propagate houseplants. However, tradescantia are excellent at producing new roots, and I have been able to do it with mine even during the dead of winter. Just be aware that it will take a bit longer…
Make the cut:
To reproduce, you need a short portion of stem; I typically find that cutting a section that is four leaves or less long is the ideal length. To ensure that what is left on the plant doesn’t wither, cut the stem slightly above a leaf (if you cut it higher above a leaf, the leftover bit of stem will eventually die back to the leaf, which can look a bit unattractive and make the plant more prone to getting a disease.)
Use a sharp, efficient tool to cut the stems: I think floral snips work best for these soft stems, but secateurs or simple, sharp kitchen scissors would also work well.
Depending on how big your parent plant is, you can remove more than one stem at a time. Try to avoid chopping off more than a third at once to avoid shocking the plant.
The parent plant will typically branch out and grow more stems where you’ve cut it, so you’ll eventually have a bigger plant as well as some new baby plants!
Strip the stem:
Remove any leaves along the stem’s bottom half so that whatever is submerged in the water is leaf-free. This means that where I’ve cut it, the bottom two leaves are gone, leaving the upper two. Simply use your hands to gently peel them off. You want to make sure the stem area is clear since any leaves left below the water line can begin to rot and cause the cutting to deteriorate as well as contaminate the water with algae.
Put into water:
Add water to the stem. As the test tube-shaped glass bottles’ lip keeps the leaf out of the water while keeping the stem submerged, I like to use them.
Special propagation kits, like mine, are available here. However, any container that can hold water will do. Simply make sure that the leaves at the top of the stem are always above the water and the bottom of the stem, where the roots will grow from, is always submerged in water.
Ongoing care:
Place your propagation unit in a location with direct, bright light, and check on it occasionally.
I always do all of my propagation out of this window in my kitchen. Although it appears to be very bright in this picture, the window faces east, so it only receives the mild morning sun. A North or East facing window would be preferable because it would provide the best light without scorching the leaves like a South or West facing window would. To stop algae growth, top off the water as it evaporates and thoroughly refill it once a week. Simply hold it under the faucet and continue to pour water into it while the old water drains out of the top to avoid spilling anything inside and injuring any growing roots.
Depending on the time of year and the environment, you should be able to see the cutting begin to produce roots in around three weeks.
It will first develop thin, spidery roots (see the picture below), but after some time, they should thicken out into a strong root network.
Potting on:
The cutting can be potted up into compost and left to grow until the roots have developed a strong network. To grow a bushy plant of tradescantia, it is a good idea to pot up several distinct cuttings. In most cases, depending on the size of the pot, I would choose anything between three and six.
Use a pot that is just below the rim, fill it with a peat-free houseplant compost, and water it first. Then, taking care to cause as little damage to the roots as possible, carefully remove your cuttings from the glass. In order for the cuttings’ roots to continue to grow, poke a few holes along the compost’s edge and gently tuck them in.
Because water-grown roots differ slightly from soil-grown roots, it can occasionally be difficult to move water-propagated plants into compost. At this stage, it’s crucial to maintain the cutting in ideal conditions, with good bright, indirect light and the soil kept evenly moist, as it adjusts to its new home.
Ideally, the plant will begin to grow quickly within a few weeks, and you’ll soon have a brand-new plant!

Tradescantia are really simple to grow in compost as well. You can prepare your cutting using the same technique as before, but instead of submerging it in water, place around four lengths of the stem around the perimeter of a container filled with compost. However, I find it slightly less pleasurable this way because you can’t watch the roots grow; instead, you just need to hope everything is okay under the soil! Keep the compost uniformly moist, and they will grow just as quickly (plus, you won’t need to worry about shifting them over).
How long will tradescantia take to root in water?
New roots should start to grow in your Tradescantia in 1-2 weeks after you have successfully propagated it. Replace the water when it turns milky and fill off your container’s water level every few days to ensure healthy cuttings.
Your Tradescantia will eventually need to be potted in soil because water lacks the nutrients your plant needs to flourish for the long term and can promote fungal infection. When?
Plant your Tradescantia cuttings after the roots are 1–2 inches long. How soon does this occur? Probably in a few months. Beyond this point, is it possible to grow your Tradescantia in water? Yes, it is hazardous.
You will require adding minuscule amounts of liquid fertilizer to the water if you choose to take the chance and grow your Tradescantia in water for an extended period of time. Your cutting will receive the nutrients it needs in this way to live as long as possible.
How to Pot Tradescantias Grown in Water
Pick a container as the first step. Three to four propagated stems are typically suitable for small nursery pots.
Step 5: Thoroughly water your plant to get rid of any air bubbles around the roots.
Continue to provide bright, indirect light to newly planted Tradescantia propagations. When rewatering for the first time, wait until the topsoil is crumbly and dry. For subsequent waterings, allow the soil to partially dry out before following your normal Tradescantia watering schedule.
How long does it take for Tradescantia nanouk to take root?
Within a week of starting a stem cutting to grow roots in water, you can expect to see results. Within a month, the roots ought to be long enough to be transplanted.
It can take between 2-4 weeks for roots to grow long enough to be established when you propagate directly in soil.
The offspring are already root-attached when a parent plant is divided, but it may take a few more weeks for the roots to become robust and healthy in the new pot.
Can Tradescantia remain submerged for all time?
