Let’s first discuss root rot, what it is, and how to prevent it.
Root rot is exactly what it sounds like: when the roots of your plant start to rot from spending too much time in water. The ideal setting for fungus and bacteria to develop is dark, moist circumstances like wet soil, which can cause your roots to rot.
Simply refrain from overwatering your monstera to prevent this. This means that watering should only be done when the top 2 inches of soil are completely dry. After that, gradually add water to the soil until the bottom begins to drain.
How can a monstera plant be revived?
You won’t be able to repot your Monstera as usual if, after cutting back the roots, you discover that it no longer has any healthy roots. You will now need to assist it in developing new roots by propagating stem fragments.
Cut off any rotted Monsteraroots, stems, leaves, or other portions of the plant that have been impacted by root rot first.
Do you still have any stems with leaf nodes? If so, fantastic! Your Monstera is still alive.
Planting Monstera stem cuttings as though you were repotting them or growing them in water are the two primary methods of propagation.
Simply follow steps 4 and 5 above to propagate them in soil. Till the infant Monstera begins to form roots, keep it out of direct sunlight. Giving it a gentle tug will allow you to determine whether it has roots yet.
Put the Monstera stem in a glass or vase of fresh water to facilitate water propagation. To keep the water clean, change it every few days. You can repot it as in Step 4 after the plant begins to grow roots.
Why is the stem on my monstera rotting?
There are several contributing elements, but fortunately the majority of them are fully within your control.
By setting conditions that support your plant but not the fungusto, you can easily prevent stem rot from destroying your monstera once you understand its causes.
Watering Schedule
Overly damp soil is the primary contributor of stem rot. When you water your soil too frequently and leave it wet for an extended period of time, viruses can flourish and infect the roots and stems of your monstera.
Your plant runs the risk of overwatering and root rot if you water according to a tight schedule rather than listening to your monstera and the soil’s needs. Put the agenda aside and pay attention to your plant!
Soil Conditions
Stem rot risk factors can also include the soil that you use to pot your monstera. Use clean, well-aerated soil that is not excessively compacted. This will go a very long way toward avoiding stem rot and a variety of other issues that are brought on by or made worse by damp soil.
The overwatering problems we just outlined can occur if the soil is too dense since it will retain too much moisture for too long. Old or compacted soil can also make it difficult for water to drain properly.
Additionally, be careful not to unintentionally pot your monstera in moldy soil. Use caution when using potting mix that has odd colorations or fuzzy, moldy-looking material. You should immediately repot your monstera plant if this later occurs in the soil.
A dirty pot should not be used to plant your monstera (or any other plant). To stop the transfer of infections from plant to plant, make careful to clean the pots between plants or use fresh ones.
However, you can prevent this fungus from flourishing by maintaining proper soil moisture and taking a few easy precautions to avoid introducing harmful fungi or bacteria to your monstera’s soil. There is no way to tell whether the soil in your monstera contains the type of fungal pathogen that causes stem rot.
Temperature
Monstera plants thrive under soil conditions that are warmer than 70 degrees Fahrenheit, which is around average room temperature for the pathogens that cause stem rot.
Even though this element may be more difficult for you to manage, you can prevent the majority of stem rot cases by not watering too frequently and maintaining well-draining soil that is full of air pockets. By ensuring correct soil ventilation, this will enable the roots to breathe and greatly reduce the risk of soil temperatures rising dangerously.
How does a monstera look when it is overwatered?
The Swiss cheese plant, or Monstera, is a great choice for interior design because of its distinctively sized leaves. However, if not properly cared for, the plant is susceptible to temperature changes and overwatering and may display unfavorable symptoms including drooping and discolored areas on the foliage. What are the symptoms of monstera overwatering, and how can you save the plant?
The yellowing, drooping, and development of brown patches on the leaves are indications of an overwatered monstera plant. To prevent root rot, repot the monstera in a potting mixture that drains properly. Lightly water the plant to keep the soil moist, and then wait until the top 2-3 inches of soil are completely dry before watering the plant again.
How is a monstera brought back to life?
- Reduce the amount of fertilizer you use. Although it is recommended to use fertilizer, avoid adding any more while the plant is wilting. Once the top inch of the soil feels fairly dry (after about a week or two), water your monstera with a nice bath under the facet (or tap) to help dissolve extra salts that can build up due to fertilizer. This should also help to rehydrate the monstera’s droopy leaves.
- Always give monstera a good soak, allowing any extra water to drip out the bottom of the pot. Give the monstera a good watering to ensure that the soil is evenly moist because drooping leaves are one of the first symptoms of drought stress. However, if the monstera’s soil is already moist, do not water because doing so could promote root rot, which would explain the plant’s drooping leaves.
- Place your monstera in a location with strong, indirect lighting. Too much shade might result in drooping leaves and stems, while full light is too intense for leaves that are sensitive to the sun. The monstera should come back to life if you put it in a room with direct light that is bright, simulating natural lighting.
- Make sure the temperature is between 60 and 85 degrees. Extreme heat makes the leaves lose more water, which makes them droop, and low temperatures stress the monstera, which can also make the plant droop. To mimic the temperatures in the monstera’s natural environment, keep it away from sources of indoor heat or air conditioning.
- By frequently spraying the leaves, you can raise the humidity. When the monstera has suffered from drought-related stress, spraying the leaves helps the plant recover by reducing water loss. In order to reach the ideal level of humidity for your monstera to revive, either spritz the plant frequently or buy a plant humidifier. Monstera typically prefer around 30 percent humidity.
- In between waterings, let the top inch of the soil dry out. If the soil is persistently damp, overwatering rather than underwatering is to blame for your monstera’s drooping. Before watering again, let the top inch or so of soil dry off. As monsteras need good drainage, make sure the monstera pot has drainage holes in the base and empty saucers and trays beneath the pot frequently to prevent water from pooling there.
- After repotting, give the monstera a good drink and check that the potting soil is well-draining. Any plant that has been replanted may have experienced considerable root damage, which temporarily impairs its capacity to adequately absorb moisture. After repotting, thoroughly moisten the potting soil to help reduce any drought stress that might have caused the leaves to droop. For monstera, use a light, well-draining potting soil. To improve drainage and mimic the soil conditions that monstera are suited to in their natural habitat, I personally enrich the potting soil with succulent and cactus soil or orchid potting mix.
- After transplanting your plant, recreate the natural environment for monsteras to rejuvenate drooping leaves. Your monstera should come back to life once it adjusts to its new environment if you give it plenty of bright indirect light, a regular watering schedule (typically once every seven days), increase the humidity by misting the leaves frequently, keep it away from heat sources, and avoid air conditioning.
- To protect your monstera from drooping and to keep it growing upright, use a bamboo support. Ideally, get a particular monstera support, which is generally wrapped in moss to replicate the growing circumstances of the monstera’s native environment. Monsteras tend to climb and can droop over without support. Naturally, the monster develops upward while clinging to the support.
Do Monstera’s roots decay and then grow back?
The crucial step is this one. The only way to stop root rot is to fully remove it. Once you replant your Monstera in the ground, any sick tissue that is still there is likely to spread further.
You should clean your shears or scissors in between cuts, just like you did when trimming the leaves. When feasible, make a single, clean cut through each root to remove it. Your Monstera will have a tougher time healing ragged edges.

Can a Monstera rehydrate after being overwatered?
Checking the soil frequently is the best way to determine whether your Monstera plant is being adequately hydrated, overwatered, or both. Either the finger test or a moisture meter can be used to determine the soil’s moisture content.
Finger test
The finger test involves using your finger to gauge the amount of moisture in the soil, as the name suggests. How? Read on.
- One to two inches of soil around the plant’s base should be reached with your finger.
- Check your finger for any indications of soil adhering to it when you remove it.
- If your finger comes out clean and the soil seems dry to the touch, water your plant.
- If the soil feels moist to the touch or bits of soil stick to your finger, wait a day or two before retesting it.
- If the soil feels wet or your finger looks muddy after the finger test, keep a close eye on your Monstera plant.
Moisture meter
An cheap tool for calculating the moisture content of soil is a moisture meter. One can be purchased at your neighborhood hardware store or nursery.
- Place the moisture meter’s probe in the soil close to the plant’s base. The probe’s tip should be inserted one to two inches into the ground.
- Wait 60 seconds for the soil moisture meter to register the moisture.
- Check the moisture meter’s display window to see the reading. Most results are displayed with a colored band to cover a range of readings in each region and as “Dry,” “Moist,” and “Wet.”
- Your Monstera plant requires water if the moisture meter indicates that it is in the danger zone. If it’s in the blue zone, the soil in your planter needs to dry out since it’s too damp. Attempt to maintain green zone moisture measurements.
Your Monstera can recover from overwatering through the soil in your pot drying out within 7 to 10 days if you can swiftly detect and remove or fix the source. If it takes the soil more than 10 days to dry, the underlying issue that is causing the soil in your Monstera plant’s pot to stay overly wet is probably still unresolved.
The root reason of overwatering your Monstera will ultimately determine how quickly it recovers. To that end, many Monstera enthusiasts inquire as to how to revive an overwatered Monstera, and the solution is frequently straightforward. Continue caring for your Monstera as usual after allowing the soil to dry out.
Your Monstera will typically need immediate corrective action to recover from overwatering. It shouldn’t take long, though, if you haven’t let the problem fester till root rot develops in. How is stem rot treated?

Root Rot Diagnosis:
You must first confirm that the roots of your plant are indeed rotting. Navigating the best remedy for your plant will be made easier by immediately removing any further potential problems. If you want to determine if your issue is genuinely indoor plant root rot, start by observing any obvious symptoms, such as:
Remember that it’s normal for older leaves to change color and fall, so pay greater attention to those younger ones. If you observe browning, yellowing, or dead leaves, it may be a sign that the roots are also dying. Wet soil and wilting foliage are two telltale signs of root rot.
Look at the saucer of the pot; if water is still there, too much water was supplied at some time, soaking the soil and roots of your plant. Standing water should never be present because it might create waterlogging of the soil and its roots.
Assess the roots at the bottom, which will have received the most water exposure, after slipping the plant out of the pot. Check the roots to see whether they are dark brown in color, squishy or spongy, or even covered in fuzzy moldy debris. These are all warning indications of rot. All of these are symptoms of weakened roots.
Root Rot Rx:
Firm roots and light colour are characteristics of healthy plants that are not rotting (usually either beige, green, or tan). The soil must be adequately moistened and the leaves must be in good condition. Once you’ve determined that your houseplant’s problem is actually root rot, it’s time to create a treatment strategy. Priorities first
1. Let the dirt dry out.
Allow the soil to air out if you’ve recently seen some standing water or a change in leaf color and are unsure whether it’s root rot yet. Allow the soil around the plant to dry out for 3-5 days. For plants that aren’t yet damaged, this technique occasionally works. Drying the soil is beneficial since plant roots require oxygen to function properly. However, if the roots of your plant are severely decomposing, go to the instructions below right away because it’s probably too late to dry the soil.
2. Get rid of all the browned leaves.
Attempting to remove any dead leaves is the first step in this process. As close to the plant’s root as you can, make sure to remove them from it.
3. Get rid of old soil.
The next step will be to repot. To do this, you must first dig the plant out of its present soil. As you take the plant out of the pot, carefully scoop out as much soil as you can. Brush off wet or clumpy soil being careful not to overly damage the root system.
4. Remove rotting and dead roots.
Trimming off rotten roots will be done carefully while the plant is still in its pot. Attempt to preserve as much as you can by removing dead roots and preserving good ones.
5. Replant in fresh soil.
Repot your plant next using sterile potting soil (one that is appropriate with your specific plant). Fresh soil will help ensure that any bacteria or fungi that may have developed have been largely eliminated. Additionally, it will provide nutrients that may have been lacking in the previous soil and aid in the plant’s recovery.
Remember that the plant is probably already susceptible and under stress from the root rot. And depending on how severe the damage is, repotting could make your plant much more stressed or even kill it. But given that the plant is already declining, it’s definitely worth a chance. Also, it’s actually your only opportunity. Allowing the root rot to continue in its current condition of decomposition will eventually kill the entire plant because root rot cannot be reversed and spreads swiftly.
Preventative Measures:
Always, prevention is the best course of action. So make an effort to develop a watering schedule that works for the particular indoor plant you have. Simple procedures like these can help prevent root rot in the future.
- Use pots that have a drainage hole.
- Use appropriate soil, and periodically check to make sure the water is draining properly.
- The plant roots must have access to some air, as was previously said, in order to survive. The plant will be able to absorb oxygen and avoid probable root rot if the soil is allowed to somewhat dry out (only the top layer). The finger test—in which you wiggle your finger a few inches deep into the soil to gauge the moisture level—works well for determining whether to water many tropical houseplants. Its presence indicates that the soil’s bottom is noticeably moist. Therefore, you won’t water again until the top layer is mostly dried.
- Again, don’t let extra water build up and remain in the bottom dish of the pot.
- Depending on the season, you’ll also need to change how much water your plant receives. Plants typically require less water during the colder, drier months.
- Keep an eye on your plant. Knowing when the plant needs less or more will help you stay in the moment.
Since root rot affects the part of the plant that cannot be seen, it is frequently not discovered until major harm has already been done. Your houseplant may be saved if you swiftly follow the survival instructions. However, if your plant simply won’t survive, we strongly advise taking some cuttings to reproduce it. In this manner, some of the plant survives and everything is not lost!
