Sunlight specks pass sporadically and seldom through the canopy into the tropical understory. Without having to use additional energy or resources to generate additional leaf area, the holes allow leaves to cover larger areas. In turn, this might increase the plant’s capacity to capture sunflecks, according to research published in The American Naturalist’s February issue. Future research can test this hypothesis using light sensor grids with holes to see if they can indeed capture the same number of sunflecks as grids without holes.
Why do Monstera plants get holes?

How can you increase the size of Monstera adansonii?
My Monstera adansonii is one plant in particular that is delighted about the approach of spring. Naturally, I’m quite sure that every one of my indoor plants is enjoying the first signs of warmer weather, but this plant truly does not like the cooler months of the year. Since I’ve had my adansonii for a while, I believe I’ve truly mastered the art of keeping it from turning yellow or crispy. Please be aware that it’s perfectly normal to need some time to learn about your plant’s requirements; don’t be frustrated if things don’t make sense straight away. Additionally, it will take some time for your plant to adapt to your particular environment, so patience is essential.
I always believe that you may enter the second year of care with more assurance once you’ve experienced the seasonal changes, temperature swings, and found the ideal position for your plant. Learn from your mistakes and, as I mentioned in the blog post Getting your houseplants ready for Spring, make a note of everything you saw that was advantageous to or problematic for particular plants in your collection. For instance, I slightly overwatered my monstera adansonii two winters ago and placed it in an area that was too bright. Though small, the adjustments I made during the colder months helped.
I decided to include a coir pole as a support for the foliage to grow up when I repotted this plant last summer. As you can see, I haven’t really fastened the stems yet because I wanted to wait till the plant had time to grow and adjust to its new pot. I placed the stems loosely around the pole, and everything has been growing well. The reason I prefer these coir poles is that they interlock easily and may be extended as your plant grows without entirely upsetting the climbing stems, as you can see in the photo below.
The optimal light for these plants is indirect light. The thin foliage is far more sensitive than, say, monstera deliciosa and has a propensity to turn crispy in excessive light. The leaves are also much more delicate than monstera deliciosa. Following some trial and error, I discovered that the ideal locations were a few meters from a south-facing window or about two meters from a west-facing window, as seen in the image below:
A setting that is excessively dark will result in growth that is generally slowed, lanky stems, and smaller leaves.
Because they actually want to dry out between waterings, these plants frequently suffer from being overwatered! Naturally, how often you water will depend on the conditions in your home, but if you’re having trouble keeping the monstera adansonii happy, it’s probably a watering problem.
In terms of fertilization, I give my plant a balanced houseplant feed every 2-4 weeks during the spring and summer, and it reacts wonderfully. In terms of maintenance, I’d probably compare this plant to my Tradescantia fluminensis tricolor because they both prefer to dry out between waterings and have similar leaf thickness. Humidity plus leaf care is another typical component of care.
The majority of adansonii thrive in a standard household setting, but if you can raise the humidity around this plant by putting it in the bathroom or using a humidifier, you’ll see larger leaves and constant development. I’d love to have one of these in my bathroom. I’m thinking of making a hanging plant out of propagated cuttings that trails off my shower pole (more on this later). Be careful around radiators and open windows if you decide to place yours in the bathroom.
Due of their paper-like texture, those special leaves can be a little difficult to keep looking their best. Since wrapping the stems around the coir pole, I’ve made it a point to routinely water the plant, which undoubtedly aids in keeping the foliage dust-free. This in turn helps keep bugs from becoming too cozy on your plant, which will support its strength and health.
Normally, I build my potting mix specifically for each plant I have… Since I don’t always have the exact ingredients, I frequently have to improvise the best recipe with what I do have. I don’t have a lot of storage room for compost bags and other items (a garden shed would be wonderful!). To get a light and airy, freely draining mixture, I prefer to add pumice (or perlite) and some orchid bark to a peat-free mix. This monstera should avoid anything that is too dense.
When you have a monstera as a trailing houseplant, you may find that over time the top of the plant begins to look a little sparse. Take some cuttings from your longest stems and chop them up to propagate them for a fuller appearance. Using a sterile blade, you should make an incision on either side of the point where the leaf meets the stem (just like you would when propagating a pothos plant). There may be a small node or an aerial root beginning to form there that you may either plant into the ground or submerge in water for a few weeks to root. When water propagation, wait to pot on the plant until the roots are a few centimeters long. Pay close care now because the plant may need some time to acclimate to the change from water to potting soil.
Checking the roots to see how things are looking “neath the surface” is my next task with this plant, after which I will start untangling these stems. I need to add a second coir pole and bend the plant around it; to hold things loosely in place, I use soft ties or velcro grips. I’m hoping for some excellent growth this year because these wonderful leaves definitely appreciate having something to cling to!
How are holes made in the Monstera adansonii plant?
I have a Swiss cheese plant that has been flourishing, but none of the new leaves have formed holes. Is there a trick I can use to split the leaves like they do in their natural environment?

A: I chose to save my Christmas poinsettias last year in an effort to get them to bloom again this coming holiday season. After some mid-spring leaf drop, I kept them in a bright, sunny window and watered them when they were dry. Now the foliage is back to being thick and green. What shall I now do?
A: As of right away, keep your poinsettia plants in a closet or other similar dark area for eight to ten hours at a time. Then, move them to their sunny window for the day. After that, put them back in the closet for the night. Then, move them back out.
By the middle of December, those green bracts should have changed into the color they were when you bought them, or a close approximation, if you continue this process for 6 to 8 weeks.
A Boston fern would look great hanging in my bathroom. How much should a beautiful Boston fern cost, in your opinion?
A: It depends on the plant’s size and the store where you purchase it. A Boston fern (or just much any other type of green plant, for that matter) in a 4-inch pot ought to cost between $3 and $4. A plant in an eight-inch pot will cost you about $20 to $25, while a plant in a six-inch pot will be a respectable deal at around $10 to $15.
The length of time it takes to grow a plant before it can be sold is another consideration. Time is money in business, thus a Kentia palm that takes several years to reach market size will cost significantly more than an Areca palm that can be grown to market size outside in a few months. The cost of a Boston fern in a major nursery, budget retailer, or supermarket will be far lower than that of the “same plant at a posh Westside florist. Just make sure the fern is big, lush, green, and healthy before purchasing it because a sick plant is never a good deal.
A: I am the humiliated owner of the Dracena marginata in Los Angeles that looks the worst. Each of the three 6-foot stems had a pitiful little tuft of leaves at the top in a 14-inch pot. This plant is still alive and consistently produces new growth at the top, so I don’t want to get rid of it even though it is so unattractive. Is there anything I can do to restore the beauty of this marginata?
A: Simply use pruning shears to trim each stalk to a height of two feet or less from the soil’s surface. This will leave you with three stalks that are two feet tall in the pot and three stalks that are four feet tall in your hand. The three short stalks will ultimately grow new growth from the sides and become the living sculptures you want them to be if you transplant them into an 8- or 10-inch pot and continue to cultivate them (eastern or northern exposure, water when the soil is dry).
You can either throw away the stalks you pruned or cut them into little, 6-inch logs and root each log in water. The future? From just three unsightly stalks, you may end up having a full forest of exquisite Dracenas.
Is there anything I should do for my indoor plants as winter approaches?
