It is advisable to to remove your Monstera entirely if the stem has broken. Cut it off at an angle as close to the stem’s base as you can using a sharp knife.
Because the old, damaged stem can’t be repaired, it is preferable to let the plant focus its resources on developing new growth.
Should I remove the Monstera’s broken leaves?
Your Monstera should have any damaged leaves removed. Trimming dead leaves helps your plant’s health in addition to improving its appearance.
- Unable to photosynthesize are dead leaves. Any brown or black areas on your Monstera’s leaves are no longer able to supply the plant with energy.
- Dead leaf sections have no protection against rot and infection in comparison to healthy leaves. Dead plant cells provide nutrients that are consumed by bacteria and fungi. For instance, you can notice mold growing on dead leaves that have been left on the plant or in the soil. To help defend the remainder of the plant against these diseases, remove any dark or damaged tissue.
It is possible that only the ripped edge of a leaf will become brown to seal a cut if there is only very minimal damage, such as accidently ripping or torn a portion of the leaf. Leave minor blemishes alone if they don’t affect other parts of the plant or interfere with your enjoyment of the plant’s aesthetics.

What your goals are will determine where you should prune a Monstera. You will need to gently prune back its roots if you want to prevent it from growing too large for its pot. Cut off any dead or unattractive leaves at the stem if you wish to get rid of them. What would happen if you wanted to multiply your plant?
If you’re not familiar with the phrase, propagation is the process of taking fragments of an established plant and allowing them to take root in either water or a growing media in order to develop into a different plant. Although it seems difficult, it is really, really simple.
You will need to make a cut beneath a node if your intention is to prune for propagation. Your plant’s nodes are the areas where the stems and leaves develop. These regions are elevated and a little bit lighter in color on a Monstera. Pick a leaf and follow it all the way down to the point where it meets the main stem if you are unsure of where a node on your plant is. There need to be a node there. Older plants frequently have nodes that sprout several leaves.

Yellow leaves can also signify a variety of things. You’re probably overwatering your monstera if the leaves are turning yellow. Make sure your plant receives lots of indirect sunshine so the top few inches of soil may dry out quickly before watering.

Light brown spots and crispy edges on monstera leaves means the monstera needs more water.
Your monstera plant may be thirsty if the edges become a light brown color and become “crispy.” Give the earth a drink and think about watering a little more frequently if it feels dry. The dead edges can be removed because they won’t recover.
Additionally, avoid placing your monstera in direct sunlight as this might burn the leaves! Move your monstera a little further into the space or to a better location altogether if you observe the sunshine directly striking your leaves.
A drooping monstera can mean it needs more water or more light.

We’ve experienced our fair share of brown, decaying leaves as we’ve learned how to properly care for various home plants over the years. We weren’t sure at first whether to take them out or leave them. Here is what we’ve discovered works the best.
Do you need to remove the dead leaves? Yes. Your indoor plants should have brown and withering leaves removed as quickly as possible, but only if they are more than 50% damaged. By removing these leaves, the plant looks better and the healthy foliage that is left can receive more nutrients.
Even though it might appear straightforward, there’s more to it than merely cutting those leaves off. To keep your plant healthy, you must assess how much of the leaf is dying and then carefully remove the damaged areas.
What should you do if a Monstera stem breaks?
Unfortunately, you can’t keep the attached leaves on that stem with it. By making a cut one inch (2,5 cm) above the closest node, you can remove the damaged Monstera stem. At that node, a new growth point will develop, and a new stem with leaves will emerge after a few months.
Put the stem in a vase with water if you don’t want to discard the damaged leaf. This will ensure that you have at least a few months to appreciate the leaf. To keep the leaf fresh, remember to replace the water frequently.
Can brown leaves revert to green?
Typically, underwatering, sunburn, or overwatering are the causes of browning leaves.
The soil possibly grew too dry for an extended period of time between waterings if the leaf tips are turning brown and hard. The plant may lose leaves as a result of this. This does not necessarily imply that you are regularly underwatering because the browning may have only occurred once. Do torn leaves heal on their own?
The majority of individuals questioned whether or not the torn leaves would mend on their own. This question is frequently posed, and the answer is no.
Plants cannot heal themselves, in contrast to humans who have an immune system that can heal wounds and scars. as they lack an immune system like a person does.
Plants have the capacity to produce new leaves in place of older leaves, but they are unable to heal damaged leaves.

Find a location in your house with higher humidity by measuring the humidity at the plant’s split leaves with a hygrometer. If your plant gets enough light in these areas, bathroom shelves and kitchen sink shelves tend to be moister than living room corners. If your home doesn’t have the right humidity for your plant, a humidifier on an enclosed porch can create a humid environment.
Should I trim the burned leaves off?
Trimming: Although many of the leaves are burned and brown, it’s possible that they were shielding the stem’s lower-lying buds. Inspect your plants for fresh growth, remove any dead or brown leaves, and trim back to the greener areas.
Verifying plants: There is a quick way to use even if a plant appears to be dead. Scratch the bark gently with your thumb nail or the blade of your secateurs. If it’s brown, it’s plainly dead there, then go a little deeper and check the cambium layer to see if it’s green. Cut back to the green areas to encourage fresh growth after separating the green (living) from the brown (dead) portions.
Check for new shoots on perennial plants to evaluate if the crown has been shielded from the elements because of its close proximity to the ground. To make room for the fresh foliage, get rid of all the burnt yellow and brown leaves.
Follow-up care is crucial for plants that have experienced trauma. Simple pruning will make the plant look better, but it’s also important to get as much air and water into the root zone as you can. Make as many holes as you can with a garden fork around the plant’s drip line to encourage microbial activity around the roots. Increase the benefits of water to the plants by applying a wetting agent in the soil to direct the water directly to the roots. Then inject some liquid seaweed into the plant roots. This not only promotes the growth of new roots, but it also thickens the walls of the leaf cells, strengthening them and increasing their resistance to harsh weather. Mulch as soon as the soil is damp. Any type of mulch will work, but make sure to spread it thinly enough to let any winter rains through.
