How To Take A Swiss Cheese Plant Cutting

Seeds, stem cuttings, or suckers can all be used to multiply the Swiss cheese vine plant, though cuttings and suckers are the more typical methods.

It is simple to take Swiss cheese plant cuttings if you are wondering how to do it. Simply take stem cuttings, leaving a portion of the stem attached, by cutting immediately after a leaf node, for this Swiss cheese plant multiplication. Trim the first leaf from the cutting’s base, then put the node in the ground. If you want to, you can apply rooting hormone, but it’s not required. Water thoroughly and let the water drain away. Ideally, you might wish to root the cutting in water first, then transfer it to a pot once rooting has sufficiently started. The Swiss cheese vine cutting should be rooted in water for two to three weeks before being transplanted to a container with nutrient-rich potting soil.

Additionally, you can grow Swiss cheese plants by wrapping wet moss around the stem at a tiny aerial root and leaf axil and securing it with twine. How is a monstera Adansonii cutting taken?

Propagation of Monstera adansonii is not too difficult, like many other vining plants. Both water and soil can be used for this. It won’t grow as much as it would in soil, but you can leave it in water indefinitely if you like.

Monstera adansonii propagation in water

  • Use clean scissors to make a cutting with a few leaves from the mother plant, cutting about 1/4 inch below a node, to propagate Monstera adansonii in water (this means the node is included on the cutting). The new roots will emerge from the nodes.
  • Leave a few inches of stem bare by removing any bottom leaves.
  • Make sure at least one node of the cutting is submerged in the water before placing it in the glass. Inspect the leaves to make sure none are submerged.
  • The cutting should be placed where there is plenty of indirect light.
  • Make careful to replace the water when it becomes murky and to top it off when you notice the level dropping.
  • Within the first week or two, you should notice tiny roots emerging, but it can take a few weeks before you can plant your cutting into soil.
  • Transfer the cutting to its permanent pot once the roots are a few inches long. According to my observations, the roots can be transmitted over a distance of two to three inches.
  • After putting the cutting in its new pot, give it the same attention and watering that you typically would.

Monstera adansonii propagation in soil (method one)

Repeat the first step above in order to spread Monstera adansonii in soil. Here it is once more:

  • Cut a few of leaves off the mother plant using clean scissors, about a quarter-inch below a node (this means the node is included on the cutting). The new roots will emerge from the nodes.
  • Leave a few inches of stem bare by removing any bottom leaves.
  • Now, bury at least one node of the cutting by placing it directly into moistened soil as opposed to submerging it in water. No leaves should be buried.
  • As the roots grow, place the cutting in indirect light that is bright and maintain the soil moist but not damp.
  • To further lock in the advantageous humidity, you can cover the top with a transparent plastic bag. Make careful to take the bag out once day to allow for fresh air.
  • Be patient; it will take at least a few weeks before the cutting’s root system emerges and you see any new growth.
  • You can test the cutting by giving it a very light tug a few weeks later. If you encounter resistance, the roots have established, and you can proceed as you would with any other plant.

Monstera adansonii propagation in soil (method two)

Another way to propagate Monstera adansonii (and other vining plants) is to lay the entire cutting on top of the soil with the nodes all pointing downward into the soil.

Instead of leaving the vine as one continuous vine, you can also break it into smaller portions and do this; just make sure each section has a node.

  • If necessary, temporarily “fasten the vine or its portions to the ground using paper clips or bobby pins.
  • Place the it in bright, indirect light and keep the soil moist, but not wet, as the roots develop.

This will also help the nodes that are in contact with the soil finally take root.

How is a cutting of Monstera made?

The Swiss Cheese Plant, Monstera deliciosa, can be multiplied in a few different ways. I assembled my instruments, started by slicing off one enormous stem, and decided on the rooting technique.

I used the fact that the section I chose had an aerial root and node (see Step 1) as a chance to hasten the process by inducing the root to grow. I chose a portion of Monty that had at least two leaves in addition to two stalks, generally known as petioles.

You might be tempted to start a Monstera from a single leaf. I tried it, but it won’t work. For propagation to occur and be effective, a node or root must be present. Like cut flowers, a stem and a leaf by itself will do perfectly well in a glass container, but without roots, they will ultimately turn yellow and regretfully die (like cut flowers).

I took the following actions to make sure Monty Jr. grew up big and strong:

Locate the Node

Locate the node by looking around around your monstera. This tiny nub is crucial and will be the ONLY method you can spread after it has roots. It is situated at a petiole intersection and resembles a plant pimple in appearance.

Cut the stem off

I sliced the stem to include this aerial root or node and leaves in one by using sharp sheers (I like them). I rinsed the cutting under filtered water after removing it from the main plant.

Snip more leaves

This would be the time to remove any additional leaves if there were any. Remove any extra leaves if there are more than two to three.

Water is required.

I cleaned it and put filtered water halfway into a glass jar (no cap required) (chlorine is not good eats for young plants).

Set the Cutting in Place

I placed the cutting carefully so that it would stay upright. To keep the plant centered, you can always try a rig using twist ties, acquire a taller jar (like I did), or lean the plant on the jar lip.

I gave Monty Jr. fresh water and rapidly rinsed the roots every few days as so. I noticed positive developments starting to occur after about a month. Both that little node (remember that little nub?) and the aerial root, which would later serve as the plant’s backbone and anchor it in the soil, began to grow roots.

Remember, I had this surgery in the middle of the summer, so putting Monty Jr. in my hot, sunny, screened-in porch right away was ideal. Since plants tend to become somewhat inert and hibernate-like throughout the winter, I honestly wouldn’t try this anyway. Don’t bother them and act decently.

Before planting, I gave Monty Jr. a full two months to relax in his bath. I selected one of my tried-and-true plastic pots, which are strong and ideal for young saplings. I placed Monty Jr. in his new house, filling it lightly without crushing the earth down. He remained outside for the remainder of the summer and the beginning of the fall, but as soon as the temperature dropped at night, I brought him inside. I took extra precautions since I assumed that fresh cuttings would be more susceptible to temperature changes. Am I right, then?

After demonstrating my competency as a parent with the second cutting I performed a few weeks later, I tried my hand at an air layering technique. Following Monty Jr.’s success, Monty Jr. II (yep, it should read Monty Junior the Second) was separated from Monty in the same manner, but this time he was wrapped in moss rather than submerged in water. By forcing the mother plant’s roots to form, you can cut the stem after air layering.

How to Air Layer

  • Step 1: Put the hardware together. You’ll need sphagnum moss, plastic wrap, and twist ties (note: avoid using dyed moss as it will get all over your hands when wet and stain everything for days).
  • Step 2: Proceed to cut a slit along the monstera stem, taking care to include the node (or nub) that will serve as your aerial root. All of this should be underneath the incision.
  • Step 3: Apply moistened sphagnum moss to the plant and wrap the node, any roots, and the incision.
  • Step 4: Use plastic wrap to wrap the bundle and twist knots to fasten it. This won’t be wrapped forever, and in a few months, you should start to see roots emerge from the node. You must remove the root package and remoisten the moss every several days. I believe a spray bottle works best for this.
  • You’ll see on the plant in the moss package that huge roots have started to form after a few months. Cut the stem completely off where the cut was, then start planting!

When will the roots of the Swiss cheese plant form?

Finding the ideal location for your Swiss cheese plant is crucial. The leaves will scorch under too much direct sunlight. If there is too much shade, the leaves won’t pierce. The best location is near a window in good lighting and is only a few feet away. Avoid placing it close to a radiator or an air conditioner. Give it plenty of space because it will become extremely big.

Swiss cheese plants can survive in temperatures as low as 10C but will only thrive in temps over 18C.

How to plant a Swiss cheese plant

Plant in a large, drainage-holed pot with peat-free, all-purpose, or house plant compost inside of it. Around the root ball, there should be at least 1 inch of compost.

Caring for a Swiss cheese plant

Swiss cheese plants require little maintenance. The time of year and the environment in the space will determine how frequently you should water your Swiss cheese plant. Instead of watering according to a schedule, water anytime the compost’s top inch or two are dry. Make sure to let all of the water run off after that. Wintertime plants require less watering, especially if they are kept in a cool environment. In the spring and summer, give the plant a monthly feeding with a house plant food.

The stems of the plant must be tied into a support, such as a moss or coir pole, as it develops and becomes floppy. These are available online or in garden centers.

Aerial roots, which are long, white roots that emerge from the plant’s stems, will also develop on the plant. These aid the plant in clinging to trees in the wild. Trimming the aerial roots off if you find them unsightly is OK because your plant will be obtaining its nutrition from the roots in the compost. To support the plant, you can also tuck them into the compost or let them climb the moss pole.

If the roots are starting to protrude from the pot, repot in the spring using plant compost or all-purpose compost. Scoop up as much of the compost from the top of the pot as you can and replace it with fresh material if the plant grows too large for you to handle it comfortably.

To keep them looking glossy and to aid in the plant’s ability to breathe, occasionally wipe the large leaves with a damp cloth. Your plant will benefit from a sprinkling of its leaves if it is in a warm environment.

How to propagate a Swiss cheese plant

Taking cuttings from a Swiss cheese plant is simple. Choose a stem in the spring or early summer that has an aerial root starting to grow further down. Look for a white or brown bud next to a leaf. This will serve as the new roots. Make a cut that is about an inch below the aerial root with a sharp knife or secateurs. Check to make sure the aerial root is immersed before placing the stem in a clear, deep container with a few inches of water. Place in a well-lit area away from the sun and replace the water every few days. Within a week or two, new roots should begin to emerge. The cutting should have developed a respectable bundle of new roots that are about four inches long after about six weeks. You can now put the new plant in a pot filled with fresh, all-purpose, or house plant compost. water, allowing any extra to drain.

Growing Swiss cheese plants: problem-solving

If the leaves on your Swiss cheese plant aren’t perforating, they might still be young; it’s common for a plant to have both cut and uncut leaves. Move to a brighter area if the larger leaves are not perforating because of a lack of light.

You have overwatered your Swiss cheese plant and the compost is too wet if it is “weeping” or has “tears” of water at the borders of its leaves. Water only when the soil starts to dry out, and allow any extra water drain away. Make sure the compost is just damp, not sopping wet.
