Step 3: Potting your Plant in LECA

If you’re relocating a plant from soil, you should start by carefully cleaning the plant of all the dirt. Given that LECA maintains such consistent, even moisture, any soil left on the plant will be damp at all times and may result in root rot or fungus.

The root system is then placed inside using LECA. Due to the fact that this stage is similar to potting with dirt, it is rather self-explanatory. Grab your pot and fill it between halfway and three-quarters full with LECA before submerging it in water. After that, put your plant’s roots in the pot and add LECA to the remaining space. Example 1: Monstera Standleyana Albo

This plant had five leaves when I first got it, but two of them had yellowed from transportation. It resided on top of my prop station on a heat mat while sitting in loose sphagnum moss, and I let it alone to heal. It naturally lost the golden leaves after two weeks, therefore I choose to relocate it to Semi-Hydro in LECA.

I discovered the soil roots were developing new, white roots when I removed the moss. It must have liked the warmth of the mat. The root system was incredibly strong and expanding.

This plant has a fair amount of value, so I wanted to put it in a transparent container so I could monitor its development. The ice cream is fantastic, and these Talenti jars are great for little plants.

I used Hydroton LECA because it wicks better and holds more moisture. Monsteras are very tolerant of damp roots and enjoy water.

After planting LECA, I added filtered water, seaweed extract, and Superthrive to the container until it reached the top of the “F in Fudge, just below that white root.

After a week, all of the water has evaporated, and a new root has appeared that has grown all the way to the bottom of the pot. That is a new water root, which you can see by how fuzzy it is.

When the plant was switched to LECA, it was in the midst of growing roots. The ideal time to transfer a plant is now. These new roots will adapt to whatever environment they are placed in, even if it is a moist one like LECA or even a body of pure water.

Monsteras are extremely resilient plants. They thrive in moisture and typically don’t require a completely dry environment before absorbing additional water. It entered LECA and began adapting right away, as seen by the persistence with which it continues to unfold a new leaf and the expansion of the fuzzy water roots.

At this point, I can either continue to keep the plant in the seaweed extract water for a little while longer or move it to a nutrient solution. Fill the container all the way to the letter F with fudge. The water-soaked root will be okay. It will be acclimated to the water because it grew in the water.

This pothos served as a test subject. On some parts, I pruned the roots; on others, I did not. Put each of these into the Hydrocrunch LECA and let it wick the liquid out of the reservoir.

The experiment did not turn out as expected since shortly after taking this picture, all of the parts started to fall apart and topple over. This picture was taken around day 10; the trimmed bits started to deteriorate first. By day twelve, everything had withered.

These pothos’ soil-based roots do not adapt well to semi-hydroponic culture. Almost all of these roots rotted away, so I had to chop them all off and water propagate the remaining, surviving parts.

According to my theory, pothos doesn’t produce new water roots unless there is a lot of moisture present. It was a recipe for disaster because the soil roots did not adapt properly to my environment. Keep in mind that our goal is to maintain the plant’s wet/dry cycle in balance for as long as possible so that water roots can grow and the plant can rely on them to survive. There were no water roots over these 12 days. (Which is interesting because pothos generally grows water roots within a week if you put it directly into water.) Even stranger still, sometimes when you submerge a pothos plant in water, the soil roots adapt to the moist environment and don’t decay. The most perplexing thing about this plant is that even though the LECA atmosphere was dry, the roots decayed.

I’m not sure whether I can do enough to keep the soil roots content in this setting for long enough to encourage the development of the water roots, or even if the water roots will even form in this setting. Therefore, whenever I switch to pothos, I always take cuttings and let them root in water first before switching to LECA.
