A waxy layer known as epicuticular wax, sometimes known as farina, produces a white or silvery-blue film on the leaves of succulent plants. All kinds of plants have it on their stems, leaves, and fruit, but succulents like Echeveria, Pachyphytum, Sedeveria, Kalanchoe, and Graptoveria, to mention a few, have it the most frequently. Remember that not all members of the genus examples featured here have powdery farina.
You undoubtedly noticed a small mark if you’ve ever unintentionally brushed against your succulent’s powdery leaves. In reality, what you’re doing is eliminating the bloom, which, depending on the species, may be permanent. If it regenerates, it doesn’t go back to its previous level.
Epicuticular wax, named as such because it develops above the cuticle on the epidermis, is actually a small number of microscopic crystals that develop on the cuticle of a plant’s surface and aid in the plant’s ability to repel water. It’s also sometimes referred to as “farina,” which is what I’ve always named it. This is referred to as being “glaucous” on succulents, which is simply defined by Webster as “having a powdered or waxy coating that provides a frosted look and tends to rub off.”
Does removing the epicuticular wax harm your plants?
It serves as a hydrophobic covering that helps shield the plant from the sun, water, infections, and insects, therefore you should avoid removing it. Simply put, hydrophobic means that it repels water.
Avoid using pesticides (which you ought to attempt to do anyway!). Fungicides and plant-based oils, such as neem, can eliminate all of the farina from a mixture. Consider systematically treating plants that have both pests and farina as a soil drench. For mealy bugs, I’ve also successfully misted leaves covered in farina with a mixture of 50 percent rubbing alcohol and water. To prevent burn, always try the product first and let it completely dry in the shade.
Use a very soft makeup brush or blow it away to remove soil from your plant’s leaves. Avoid using your fingers since they may spoil the powdered effect due to skin oils.
Farina helps keep the leaves clean, which is one aspect of it that I especially like on succulents. Dirt, microorganisms, and other particles are caught in the water’s surface beads, which roll them away. The Lotus Effect is the name for this. Last but not least, the waxy covering helps keep water inside the plant, allowing succulent leaves to stay lovely and plump.

Every portion of the plant, including the stem, leaves, and even the flowers, develops farina. The quantity can change based on the species, as well as within a single species, depending on the region of growth (both in cultivation and in the wild). Unlike soft, fuzzy succulents that can’t be removed with a wipe, farina can.
A healthy plant has an even covering of epicuticular wax. If you observe a mottled appearance, it can be caused by a sickness or by high humidity. This is why it’s crucial to routinely inspect your plants (I have no idea why I’m even bringing this up because I already know you spend hours staring at your plants, OR IS THAT JUST ME? Don’t respond to it.
I can still clearly recall my first time using farina. It was really thick near the base of a flapjacks paddle plant, and I simply knew it was some kind of mold or disease. Can you see why I was concerned? It was so heavy that it was coming off in pieces. It turned out to be epicuticular wax exclusively.
So how do you tell the difference between farina and powdery mildew?
Well, farina is more evenly distributed across the surface of the plant, whereas powdery mildew begins splotchy and steadily develops since it is brought on by fungal spores. Your plant will also start to become sick from powdery mildew, which will result in leaf deformation and aesthetic harm. Another reason to keep an eye on your plants’ health is because of this. You want to stop things like this before they spread to other people.
It’s almost hard for plants to arrive in the mail without having some of the farina washed away. It is displayed below in the Echeveria Lauii. Waiting for it to grow out is the only option (this one did, and it looks wonderful now!). When this occurs, there is absolutely no reason to be alarmed, and the sender is not at fault. It’s merely a step in the procedure. THERE WILL BE GROWTH!
Another specimen of an Echeveria pollux is seen below. This one started out without farina on nearly all of its leaves, but it has since grown out. They gradually climbed to the bottom as time went on and fresh leaves sprouted from the middle. As the plant matures, the first leaves will eventually wither and die (which is totally normal).
While investigating farina on succulents, I came across some information about Giant Chalk Dudleya (D. brittonii) that grows in fissures on steep volcanic rocks that I thought was intriguing. (Unfortunately, I don’t have a picture of one, but you can still admire this crest.) Depending on where they grow, there are two types: one has a thick, glaucous coating, while the other does not. The UV reflectance of the Brittonia that does have farina is astounding, at 83 percent, more than that of any other plant species. (Wait, what?) However, the same species’ non-glaucous variants only provided 10% reflectance!
If you have a succulent that has had its powdery farina removed (perhaps because you accidentally cleaned the entire plant with horticultural oil like I did), it may be best to keep it shaded from the sun until it is acclimated again. This is because powdery farina is not only attractive, but it is crucial to plant health. Keep in mind that farina on succulents doesn’t return to how it was before, so be careful not to rub it off!

How can powdery mildew on succulents be removed?
Depending on the type of succulent you have and the severity of your powder problem, you can utilize a variety of efficient powdery mildew treatment techniques.
The following methods for treating powdery mildew on succulent plants have been shown to be effective.
Neem Oil
Simply combine one tablespoon of neem oil with a gallon of water, and spray your plants with the mixture every two weeks until the powdery mildew on the leaves of your succulent plants is gone.
Dish Soap and Water
Use an eye dropper for small plants or, if you have one, a spray nozzle attachment to apply the liquid to the succulent leaves after thoroughly mixing it up.
Powdery mildew will be quickly eliminated by using this kind of treatment, but you should take care not to get any dish soap solution into the soil as this could harm the roots.
Baking Soda
Simply mix one tablespoon of baking soda with one gallon of water, and then mist the solution onto the leaves of your succulent plants every two weeks to eradicate powdery mildew.
Hydrogen Peroxide
Half a gallon of water should be mixed with one teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide powder. Once the powdery mildew is gone, repeat this procedure every two weeks on the leaves of your succulent plant.
For each use, it is advisable to prepare fresh hydrogen peroxide solutions because, once mixed with water, it loses its effectiveness after a few days.
Insecticidal Soap or Horticultural Oil Spray
Mix one spoonful of powder into a gallon of water before using insecticidal soap or horticultural oil sprays.
Use an eye dropper for small plants or, if you have one, a spray nozzle attachment to apply the solution to the succulent leaves.
This method of treating powdery mildew will quickly eliminate the fungus, but be careful not to get any powder mixture into the soil as this could harm the roots.
Remove Powdery Mildew Infected Leaves
Get rid of powder-covered leaves as soon as you notice them to help prevent powdery mildew on plant leaves.
If the infection is stopped before it spreads to other healthy succulent plants, it may even help to stop an infestation.
Mouthwash
Simply combine a few drops of mouthwash with a gallon of water, then spray the mixture into the leaves of your succulent plants every two weeks to eradicate powdery mildew.
As effective as many other commercial powder treatments is the mouthwash powder blend. However, it also gives them a mint flavor, deterring animals like deer, rabbits, raccoons, and squirrels from devouring your succulents in their entirety.
Why is the white powder on my succulent there?

Why is there dust on my succulent?

Can powdery mildew be eliminated?
The good news is that most cases of powdery mildew infections are minor. With the right care to increase ventilation, otherwise healthy plants may frequently recover on their own after weather changes.
There are treatment methods available that do not include the use of traditional fungicides for serious infections or an issue that affects the entire garden.

Cultural Controls
Most of you have likely experienced a rosemary plant that died from this disease. How could that be?
Often, it is obvious that you killed your plants by giving them a bit too much love and solving the issue incorrectly, usually by overwatering or underwatering.
The catch-22 in this situation is that stressed plants are more vulnerable to infection even if the fungus itself must survive on a living host and even though its objective may not be to kill your favorite rosemary.
If your plants are not given the right attention, you are doing them a disservice and opening the door to diseases, as well as other issues like pest infestations, a failure to produce beautiful flowers or high crop yields.
Cultural controls, which deal with alterations to the growth environment, are essential components of organic farming and integrated pest management (IPM).
Making adjustments to the soil’s pH or nutrient composition, watering more or less, and ensuring that plants receive the proper amount of sunlight are some examples of these.
Keeping plants healthy, content, and hopefully free of illness requires providing them with the right environment.
Although you might be able to nurse a tropical plant along through the fall in a cold climate, or you’re “only two zones away from what was indicated on the plant tag,” those recommendations are there for a reason. If you’ve been ignoring those USDA Hardiness Zones and recommended planting times for your region up until now, take heed.
In order to promote optimum airflow, cut foliage as needed. Damp, crowded foliage is more prone to infection.
In general, sun is the enemy of fungal illness, so be sure to provide plants with as much sun as they require to thrive, whether that be shade, partial sun, or full sun.
Some experts advise watering overhead to prevent this illness, but others strongly advise against it because it would increase the humidity inside the plant. Such an increase in humidity may promote infection or worsen an already present ailment.
Follow our instructions and be sure to never wet the leaves while watering plants; always water at the soil line. Since plants will have time to dry off before nightfall, watering early in the day is often preferable to watering at night.
Powdery mildew is more prone to infect lush, recently produced tissue. As a result, avoid nitrogen fertilization in the late summer and always be mindful to prevent overfertilizing your plants with this nutrient if you have a problem with this disease in your garden.
If your plants are contaminated, remove and destroy the diseased tissue. The virus can spread to other areas of your garden if you put it in your compost pile.
Plant material and surrounding weeds may both act as hosts for dormant spores. Keep your garden borders and beds weed-free and spotless.
Some growers who raise their crops in greenhouses syringe the leaves of vulnerable plants with water during the day when humidity is low, said Dr. Gary Moorman at the Penn State Extension. Given that the spores won’t germinate in the presence of water, this has been demonstrated to be an effective way to prevent powdery mildew infections.
However, this method can significantly raise the likelihood that the plants will develop other diseases, like fungal leaf infections. We don’t advise it.
Milk
Spraying milk on plant parts that exhibit symptoms will aid in controlling powdery mildew, especially if done at the beginning of an illness.
Many organic farmers utilize this method, which has been proven successful in research on tomatoes, grape vines, apples, pumpkins and other winter squash, cucumbers, zucchini, and other types of plants over the course of more than 60 years.
The above-mentioned study on pumpkins and acorn squash demonstrated that applications of compost tea were ineffective, but this widely accessible product could give control comparable to that attained by the use of traditional chemical fungicides. Early on in the infection, milk treatment was most beneficial.
The usual recommendation is to spray your plants with milk that has been diluted 1:10 with water as soon as an infection appears.
You can use liquid or powdered milk. The data that is currently available suggests that greater milk concentrations might be the most efficient.
For moderate to severe infections, try a 50/50 mixture of liquid milk and water, or even full-strength milk if you don’t have a lot of space to treat.
Although some experts advise against using whole or 2 percent milk because of their fat content, others maintain that it doesn’t matter what kind you use.
Fill a spray bottle with the liquid, then use it to treat the damaged portions of your plants, including the stems and the undersides of the leaves. Apply twice weekly until you start to see benefits, and don’t forget to reapply after rain.
Though the spray can acquire a sour smell in the hot heat, milk spots on plants’ leaves shouldn’t be a concern (less unattractive than the mildew, at least, if you do notice any). Of course, this is preferable to having ill plants on your hands.
Sodium and Potassium Bicarbonate
Since the early 1930s, scientists have tested the efficacy of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) as a fungicide and discovered that it is ineffective on plants, despite being able to stop the formation of mold in a laboratory.
It might help prevent rotting of harvested fruits and vegetables, according to Dr. Linda Chalker-Scott, Associate Professor of Plant Pathology and Extension Specialist at Washington State University.
