What causes my cactus to milk?

The plant may also leak sap in response to excessive watering, although the sap may also be a deadly defense mechanism.

What does a cactus’ white substance represent?
The substance that appears to be cotton fibers is actually a fine wax made by adult cochineal scale insects, and the little black specks may be their nymphs. On cholla (Cylindropuntia spp.) and prickly pear (Opuntia spp.) cactus, it is typical in this region. The white beards that resemble those on other cacti, such as the Peruvian old man (Espostoa lanata) and Peruvian old woman (Espostoa melanostele), are not an insect byproduct but rather typical, healthy changed tissues. Landscape chollas and prickly pears have a white waxy coating produced by cochineal scale that helps shield these actual bugs from predators and insecticides.
I’ve seen prickly pear pads covered in that white fluff almost entirely. Mild infestations, like the ones Doa Ana County Extension Master Gardener Dael Goodman and I saw at in Las Cruces earlier new week, are more typical. In New Mexico, there are multiple native cholla and prickly pear species. There are numerous of them in the Goodmans’ front yard, and we immediately noted that some species were more affected by the cochineal scale than others.
Topical pesticides, especially natural ones like petroleum oils and insecticidal soaps, are unlikely to be effective no matter what time of year it is if the insects are shielded by a white covering. Also, keep in mind that the ultimate goal isn’t to completely eradicate cochineal scale from your garden—partially that’s impossible—but rather to control the populations of insect pests until beneficial insects come to the rescue.
You will be shocked to see a bright red liquid that seems to appear out of nowhere if you squeeze a glob of the white goo that has healthy females hidden inside. Carmine, a natural dye used for millennia to color textiles and create artwork, is produced inside the bodies of cochineal scale insects. Because this carmine component is also utilized in red foods and cosmetics like sausages, lipstick, pie fillings, and vividly colored alcoholic beverages, check product labels for it. Before the firm converted to an artificial dye in 2006, it was used to create the vibrant color of Campari liquor, but a new generation of craft distillers and other producers are increasingly adopting it as a substitute for synthetic red components.
Goodman and I attempted to film the flowing red fluids squeezing the white tufts on her prickly pear pads with a small stick, but we hardly noticed any redness. The female cochineal population may be declining at this time of year, or those specific tufts may be so old that the residents have long since disappeared and have only left that waxy material behind. We’ll give it another go with a fresher sample in the summer.

My cactus exploded, why?
My large, ancient Tricocereus is about to fall. When the weight of all those enormous white blossoms is simply too great to support during the summer bloom season, they do it. It cleanly breaks off at the weakest part and flops to the ground. It hurts the blooms and seems scruffy. However, this is a strategy for plants whose seed-germination circumstances aren’t guaranteed. They have a Plan B built in by evolution that ensures species reproduction even in the face of climatic change.
The four-foot-tall, two-inch-diameter stalk tips over such that the top falls several feet away from the mother clump. If moistened, the sections that are directly on the earth will eventually develop roots. The stem then develops vertical shoots that continue to grow, resembling a linear hedge. This is how the mother clump spreads out far further than she could with close-coupled crown stems.
The seasons when cactus in the wild receive water are relevant to this tale. They gain weight throughout the rainy season before blooming. Trico flops due of the water and bloom’s weight. More blossoms form after all this uptake if the rains come late or we begin watering early, adding weight to the delicate fibers holding these guys erect. When compared to cholla with a similar diameter, this Trico’s “lacewood” skeletons are in fact rather delicate.
This serves as a reminder to water your cacti. I would later learn that the Tricos managed to withstand the drought caused by the property’s previous owners so they didn’t fail that first summer. The Tricos, however, had a major meltdown once I started to grow the cactus border by providing watering. They had grown better, quicker, and more vigorously as a result of the irrigation, but at a price. I discovered the hard way that in highly upright species, compassion makes the wood weak. To foster new branches with fewer or no flops, water these after flowering while keeping them on natural rainfall until the summer bloom.
Barrels and saguaros should also be avoided by compulsive hand-waterers. Imagine them as an accordion with closely spaced ribs that provide shade for one another when internal moisture levels are low. These cactus’ ribs grow as they absorb water, increasing the plant’s overall diameter. The little seam that links one rib to the next can really start to split open like a ripe peach if you give them too much water in the summer. The initial indication that a split is about to occur is frequently just a little spot, an upright callus or scab. Continue watering it, and it will practically blow up! If you do it in the fall, you run the risk of severely damaging the water-filled plant from freezing, which happens far less frequently to drier plants. You’ll be sorry if you put your priceless enormous golden barrel or saguaro over water. Replacements cost a lot of money.
