The plants frequently start out appearing depressed from overwatering, then the color or general appearance may fade from lack of nutrients, then the plants start to look thirsty from the lack of surviving roots that can adequately hydrate the plant. At this point, the plant may occasionally receive additional water, aggravating the problem. Last but not least, the indoor gardener digs about in the soil and discovers the plug but no roots, wrongly supposing that the plug has’suffocated’ the roots and is the problem.

Even though the plant has roots that extend beyond the plug and into the soil, some indoor gardeners will notice the plug early on and name it nasty or a “death plug,” which is inaccurate and extremely evocative. What size are succulent plugs?

Can plug-in plants be planted directly in the garden?

Although seeds are less expensive to purchase, properly sowing and cultivating them requires the purchase of propagation equipment. Germination can also be hit or miss, and picking out tiny seedlings is a tedious task. Purchasing plug plants allows gardeners the luxury of delegating the more difficult initial stages to the professional grower, who will then take over once the young plants are somewhat more established and are grown until they are ready to be potted up or planted into their final positions, each in its own plug of compost.

The size of the plug plants when you purchase them will determine how much work needs to be done on them and how much you will pay. Smaller animals cost less, but they often require more care.

  • The first of the season, mini plugs begin to fill garden centers and nurseries in late February. These require the most care and consideration as they grow in trays or pots. As soon as possible after purchasing, plug plants should be transplanted into larger pots or trays.

Just moisten your plants with water. The best way to accomplish this is to submerge them in water and let their roots absorb it.

Make a hole in the center of a tiny pot or seed tray with good quality, freely draining multipurpose compost that is roughly the same size as the plug plant. Pinch the plug’s bottom gently and push upward while holding it by the leaves. Place the root ball in the hole, making sure the stem is level with the surrounding compost as it was previously, and lightly compact the compost to seal the plug.

Water the newly planted plants gently, letting any extra water drain away. Put them in a place that is well-ventilated, well-lit, and somewhat warm, such a greenhouse or windowsill. Feed them a balanced liquid feed at 23 weeks, and then do it again every 10 to 14 days.

You can harden off your plants so they are ready to be planted outdoors once they are strong and well-grown. This only entails leaving them outside in a protected area during the day and bringing them inside at night to acclimate them to lower outdoor temperatures for a week or two. Keep them inside until the winter weather passes if the temperature falls below 5 C.

Your plugs should be prepared for planting out into their final position once the plants have established strong roots in the compost and the risk of frost has gone. How should a succulent plug be replanted?

3. After putting everything together for planting, take one plant out at a time. The plug substance that the roots are growing in can be softened with water. If the roots are quite little when you plant them, don’t worry; they will grow. Remove the plug material with care. Don’t throw away any small bits of sedum that fall off because they will typically take root and grow into new plants.

4. Fill each pot with the proper potting mix and name it.

5. Water them and allow them to sit until they are actively developing outside in a protected but light area. When that time comes, you can plant them wherever you wish (raised beds, containers, etc).

In this case, I utilized a nursery tray that can hold four plastic pots. The small-sized varieties of sedum and sempervivum benefit from this because their roots don’t require much depth to develop. In 4″ plastic pots that will fit into the molded tray, the plants that develop deeper roots will flourish. They won’t trip or trip over because of it. Have you noticed that some of the pots appear to be empty? In order for me to identify which sedum it is once it begins to sprout further plants, they have little broken bits of sedum sprinkled on top of the soil with an ID tag.

My plugs need to be transplanted when?

Your plugs are ready to be transplanted into larger containers when certain conditions are met. The existence of genuine leaves is the most obvious. The leaves that develop after the cotyledons are these. The initial set of leaves to sprout after a seed germinates are called cotyledons, which are embryonic leaves. With an oval form and smooth borders, they have the appearance of rabbit ears. True leaves are smaller and have the same form as mature plant leaves. The margins of the genuine leaves on a transplanted tomato plant are indented. Although you can relocate your plugs when they only have one set of real leaves if you handle them carefully, it is more typical to transplant them when they have two sets because the plugs are more robust at this point. After they reach the true leaf stage, tomato, pepper, and eggplant plugs can still be transplanted for a few weeks. Even if the plugs start to lose their balanced, brand-new appearance, you can still grow a nice plant from larger, older plugs.

Handle Plugs with Care

When you transplant, handle your plugs carefully. They are sensitive, and if you pull out the roots or injure the stems, the plant may be irreparably damaged. The ideal method is to gently pull them at the point where the leaves meet the stem. Fluids are transported throughout the plant by stems. A healthy stem typically indicates a healthy plant. Work gently and cautiously until you master managing your plugs because if you squeeze too firmly, you could damage the stem.

Try utilizing a tool to loosen your plugs if you discover that they won’t come free from your transplant trays without tearing. We use oyster shuckers, which have blunt blades and little knobby handles, to scoop out ours. They’re perfect for the position.

Plant Deeply

The deeper the transplant, the better. When you move a vegetable plug, you give it a fresh start and the opportunity to develop a better, stronger, even flawless structure. Deep planting can be used to correct stem bends. Because the little hairs you see along the stem are adventitious roots, tomatoes that are planted deeply grow a greater root system. They only require soil contact to start developing. Just one or two sets of genuine leaves should remain above the soil line when transplanting virtually the entire length of the stem.

Saturate Before and After Transplanting

Before transplanting, the soil in the transplant containers is always moistened. This enables us to dig a precise hole in the ground for the roots and stem. Additionally, it lessens transplant shock, ensuring a smooth start for the plugs. In order to ensure that moisture properly reaches the soil, we actually prefer to water at least twice before transplanting.

In moistened soil, a dibble creates a nice, well-formed, and centered hole. Although it may experience some deterioration in the process, your finger can accomplish the same task!

We water the plugs at least twice more after transplanting them to make sure the roots have enough moisture for the first several days. There is proof that watering the plugs with fish emulsion right away after transplanting is even more beneficial than watering them alone. This additional boost will cause the plants to grow bigger, healthier, and more productive.

Full Sun Required
