He divided the cacti he was familiar with into the genera Cactus and Pereskia in 1737. However, he consigned them all to the genus Cactus when he published Species Plantarum in 1753, which served as the foundation for contemporary botanical classification. The term “cactus” is derived from the Ancient Greek “kaktos,” which Theophrastus used to refer to a spiky plant that may have been the cardoon (Cynara cardunculus). [27]
