The so-called walking cactus is a member of the lobopodians, a class of extinct worm-like organisms presumed to be the ancestors of arthropods. Arthropods, such as spiders, have segmented bodies and limbs with joints that are protected by a hard shell.

All lobopodian remains had soft bodies and soft limbs prior to the discovery of the walking cactus, Diania cactiformis, according to Jianni Liu, the primary researcher who is connected to Northwest University in China and Freie University in Germany.

According to Graham Budd, a professor of paleobiology at Uppsala University in Sweden who was not involved in the current study, the discovery of the walking cactus helps fill in the evolutionary history between the velvet worms and contemporary arthropods, which are, in terms of numbers and diversity, the most dominant group of animals on the planet.

According to Budd, the walking cactus is the first and only instance in which an organism that cannot be identified as an arthropod has rigid, jointed limbs designed for walking.

Budd is not, however, persuaded by the researchers’ claim that the hardened legs of the walking cactus were directly handed on to contemporary arthropods.
