Rain forests and even Canada’s far north are home to cacti. However, their most amazing characteristic is their capacity to flourish in the desert, where rain occurs sporadically and erratically.

The cactus have developed a wide range of adaptations to live in the desert, according to Erika Edwards, a plant evolutionary researcher.
The saguaro, or Carnegiea gigantea, is one of the most recognizable cacti. However, they only flourish in the Sonoran Desert, where they can be seen growing tall in a small area of southern Arizona, northern Mexico, and southeastern California.
According to research by Edwards and Michael Donoghue of Yale University, leafy shrubs and trees of the Pereskia genus originally exhibited some of these water-saving characteristics over 20 million years ago.

Stomata are tiny skin pores that open and close on all plants to capture carbon dioxide. Plants convert the carbon dioxide they have gathered into nourishment in the form of carbohydrates during photosynthesis. Water escapes from the pores every time they open, making the process challenging in the desert.
It’s hazardous business to open the pores and lose water if you’re attempting to conserve water, Edwards told LiveScience.
Cacti and other nocturnal plants, including agaves and aloes, open their pores at night while most plants open their stomata during the day.
Cacti are able to hold onto water because of the cooler temperatures, lack of sunlight, and quieter breezes.
In order to thrive in their harsh environments, cacti have also evolved succulent tissue, waxy skin, prickly spines, and a unique root system.

Even lacking the morphological peculiarities of the typical leafless cacti, leafy cacti like the Pereskia and other plants have evolved comparable water-saving features and reside in the desert.
It’s solid proof that the tactic is effective, according to Edwards. “The plants thrive very well in these conditions.”

You may need to move your cactus to a cooler location if you see that the side facing the sun is beginning to turn yellow or brown.

Hydration Fixation
For many plant owners, watering cacti plants has been a worrying thought. We are aware that they require water because they are plants, but we have also been warned about providing them with excessive amounts of water because they originate from the desert. Cacti actually require regular waterings; they only have a particular defense against drought.
The need of water cannot be overstated if you want your cactus to grow. You can feed them water once a week if they are in a sunny area with good daytime heat. My friend Charles Cody, who oversees one of the greenhouses at Washington State University, told me that. He pointed out a few various cactus when I went to the greenhouse.

Cacti thrive in the desert, but I’m not fully suited to that environment. I believe my preferred environment is a warm greenhouse with ideal cat napping circumstances.
What is required of cacti?
You likely image deserts and dry outdoor environments when you think of cacti in their natural surroundings. Even though those locations don’t represent the best habitats for all cacti, they do highlight a crucial aspect of that habitat: light. For cacti to thrive and grow to their maximum capacity, strong light is essential. To bloom, they also require enough light.
12 to 18 hours a day of direct sunlight are recommended for cacti. Spiny and hairy cactus require more light than smooth and leafy varieties, according to Texas A&M AgriLife Extension. In bright, south-facing windows, indoor cactus thrive.

Your cactus plants are just as deadly if you overfeed them as they are if you overwater them. Knowing when to feed cactus plants and how to fertilize a cactus are crucial, as is taking care not to overfeed. It increases the likelihood that your plants will remain thriving and healthy.
A cactus doesn’t require water.
Only water cacti when the soil in the potting container is almost entirely dry. Saturate the soil and, if you can, stay away from the leaves when watering. When you notice water dripping from the potting vessel’s drainage holes, stop watering.
A cactus plant kept indoors needs watering every 10 days or more during the spring and summer. Cacti only need to be watered every 4 to 6 weeks in the winter.
Typically, underwatered cactus plants will exhibit the following symptoms:

Avoid spraying the leaves and foliage of cacti in general. This frequently causes stagnant water to accumulate on the leaves, which can hasten the spread of fungus infections.
