Abstract:

Some of the most unusual and fascinating plants in the plant kingdom include cacti and succulents.

Cacti can have opulent forms, spines, and occasionally fragrant huge decorative flowers.

Succulents have the ability to grow in attractive shapes and bear fragrant flowers on long-lasting inflorescences.

In addition to their potential as aesthetic plants, cacti and succulents are frequently drought, heat, and/or cold hardy and can have low nutritional needs.

When combined, cacti and succulents form a collection of plants that have the potential to be used as decorative potted, bedding, or landscape plants.

Three years ago, we started a project to assess the potential of understudied species from these two plant families as novel attractive crops.

Early research centered on figuring out what triggers flowering and evaluating each species’ potential as a new decorative potted, bedding, and/or landscape plant.

Over 75 cactus species from six genera have had their flowering needs established thus far.

With succulents, we have concentrated on figuring out how to make already recognized aesthetic crops flower (typically because of plant/leaf morphology). In addition to flower induction research, we created standards for evaluating each plant group’s beauty potential.

Additional testing was done to create production protocols, and the results will be discussed.

This study is an illustration of a case study that shows what experiments might be taken into account before starting work on a new group of species that have the potential to be commercialized as ornaments.

The most promising species, upcoming tests, breeding requirements, and planned collections will all be covered.

Cacti are what kind of plants?

Cacti are a good option if you want to give your plant collection a bit more variety. Fearful of jagged spines? Not to worry. Some varieties of cactus plants are completely spineless. The modified leaves that make up cactus spines shield the plant from predation by animals and provide shade for the plant’s surface.

If given the relatively straightforward care instructions they require, cacti make excellent landscape specimens and indoor plants. This calls for soil that drains effectively, low to moderate moisture, full sun outside or brilliant inside light, and desert cactus plants. What distinguishes cacti from other decorative plants?

Opuntias (subfamily Opuntioideae) and “cactoids,” two groupings of “core cacti,” make up the majority of the 1,500–1,800 species of cacti (subfamily Cactoideae). The majority of these two groups’ members are unmistakably cactus. They have squishy succulent stems, which are important photosynthesis-producing organs. They lack, have tiny, or have temporary leaves. They produce blooms with ovaries that are submerged deeply into a fleshy receptacle under the sepals and petals (the part of the stem from which the flower parts grow). All cacti feature areoles, which are short, highly specialized branches with incredibly short internodes that produce blooms, spines, and regular shoots. [10]

Only two groupings of cacti remain: the relatively smaller Maihuenia and the three tree-like taxa Leuenbergeria, Pereskia, and Rhodocactus (all originally included in Pereskia). Since these two groups differ significantly from other cacti[10], they must frequently be excluded from general descriptions of cacti. The species of the first three genera resemble other tropical forest trees on the surface. When fully grown, they feature long-lasting leaves that serve as the primary source of photosynthesis, along with woody stems that may be covered in bark. Their blooms may have areoles that produce additional leaves and superior ovaries, which are located above the sites where the sepals and petals attach. The two varieties of Maihuenia have pronounced succulent leaves and succulent stems but not photosynthetic ones. [10]

Growth habit

Cacti have a wide range of development behaviors that are challenging to categorize into distinct, straightforward groups.

Cacti can resemble trees (are arborescent), which means they usually have a single, more-or-less woody trunk that is topped by a number of branches. The branches of the genera Leuenbergeria, Pereskia, and Rhodocactus are covered in leaves, making it difficult to identify the species of these genera as cacti. As with Pachycereus pringlei or the larger opuntias, most other cacti have branches that are more like regular cacti, devoid of leaves and bark and coated in spines. Some cacti, like larger specimens of Echinocactus platyacanthus, can grow to be tree-sized without having any branches. When many stems emerge from the ground or from branches that are very low to the ground, as in the case of Stenocereus thurberi, a cactus is often referred to as being shrubby. [11]

Columnar is a good word to describe smaller cacti. They are made up of upright, cylinder-shaped stems that may or may not branch, with no obvious distinction between the trunk and branches. It is challenging to draw a line between columnar forms and forms that resemble trees or shrubs. For instance, Cephalocereus senilis has smaller, younger specimens that appear columnar, and older, larger specimens may resemble trees. The “columns” might occasionally be horizontal rather than vertical. Stenocereus eruca can therefore be characterized as columnar while having stems that grow parallel to the ground and root at regular intervals. [11]

Cacti with even smaller stems could be referred as as globular (or globose). Unlike columnar cactus, they have stems that are shorter and more formed like balls. Globular cacti can grow alone, like Ferocactus latispinus, or their stems can group together to form enormous mounds. A cluster’s stems may all or some of them share a root. [11]

Other cacti look very distinct from one another. Some plants develop as forest climbers and epiphytes in tropical areas. Their stems often lack spines and are flattened, resembling practically leaves in form. Large climbing cactus are common; one Hylocereus specimen measured 100 meters (330 feet) from root to farthest stem. When growing in trees high above the ground, epiphytic cacti like the Rhipsalis or Schlumbergera species frequently hang downward and group together in dense groups. [11]

Is a succulent a decorative plant?

Succulent plants, sometimes referred to as succulents in botany, are plants having thickened, fleshy, and engorged portions that typically serve to retain water in arid regions or soil conditions. Due to the fact that it frequently can only be used as an accurate characteristic at the single species level, it is a feature that is not used scientifically for the definition of the majority of plant families and genera. The Latin word sucus, which means “liquid” or “sap,” is where the word succulent originates. [1] Water can be stored by succulent plants in a variety of parts, including the leaves and stems. Some succulent organs can contain up to 9095 percent water. [2] Since roots are sometimes included in definitions, geophytes that endure adverse conditions by dying back to underground storage organs may be referred to as succulents. The term “succulent” is occasionally employed in horticultural contexts in a way that excludes species that botanists would classify as succulents, such as cacti. The majority of cacti genera originated in the Americas and can be found from Canada to Chile. They are now widespread around the world, particularly in Australia, South Africa, and nations in the Mediterranean.

Some people mistakenly believe that cacti are only found in the desert, yet many species, like the prickly pear cactus, may be found in a variety of settings.

Cacti are seed-producing blooming plants. They are able to bloom every year, but when it rains a lot, they will produce a lot of flowers. Different flowers have different looks and smells to draw different pollinators, like insects and bats. Cacti grow slowly and have a long lifespan. Saguaro cacti, for instance, can survive for up to 175 years. Between the ages of 75 and 100, they do not develop their first arms.

Populations of cacti are generally stable. However, some species are diminishing as a result of being taken out of the wild and planted on xeriscaped lawns as decorative plants (landscaped areas that require little or no irrigation).
