A fern is what kind of plant?
Ferns are a group of non-flowering vascular plants (class Polypodiopsida) with real roots, stems, and intricate leaves that reproduce through spores. There are approximately 10,500 recognized species of ferns that are still living today, although estimates have gone as high as 15,000 due to incomplete knowledge of some families and the ongoing discovery of new species in uncharted tropical regions. The ferns are a group of vascular plants that date back to the Carboniferous Period, which began around 358.9 million years ago, and possibly even farther. They had a life cycle that predated seed-plant life cycles and was spore-dependent for dissemination. Monilophytes has become a popular alternative name for the group in contemporary botanical literature.
What characteristics make a plant a succulent?
Any plant that has fleshy, thick tissues that can store water is considered succulent. Some succulents, like cacti, only store water in the stem and have no or few leaves, but other succulents, like agaves, primarily store water in the leaves. The majority of succulents are endemic to deserts or areas with a semiarid season and have deep or wide root systems. More than 60 plant families have succulent species, with the Aizoaceae, Cactaceae, and Crassulaceae having the highest proportions. Aloe, Echeveria, Kalanchoe, and other plants are among those that are grown as ornamentals and indoor plants.
The timing of the opening of stomata, which are tiny mouthlike structures on the surface of plant leaves and stems, is one adaptation shared by many succulents. Stomata enable the exchange of water and oxygen with the environment as well as the uptake of carbon dioxide from the environment. The stomata of many succulent plants are closed during the day and open at night, in contrast to those of most plants. As a result, less water loss (transpiration) happens during the hot, dry daylight hours, while carbon dioxide (CO2) uptake takes place at night. As a result, these succulent plants display crassulacean acid metabolism, a modified form of CO2 fixation and photosynthesis.
Can you grow ferns and succulents together?
Succulents’ distinctive leaves and general appearance, along with the fern’s whimsical vibe, could definitely result in some creative garden arrangements or interior planter designs. But can you grow ferns and succulents together?
If the temperature is suitable for both plants, you can grow ferns and succulents together in the same area, but each will require a different maintenance schedule. Succulents and ferns are native to many types of settings, but they are typically not ideal companion plants for one another.
While both of these plant varieties can survive in comparable circumstances, for each to flourish, they need a different environment and level of care. This article examines some of those variations to clarify why pairing succulents and ferns should be avoided and to recommend substitute partners for each of these unusual plant species.
A fern is a plant, not a bush.
Plants without flowers include ferns. In most cases, ferns produce spores to reproduce. Ferns are plants with roots, stalks, and leaves, just like blooming plants. Unlike blooming plants, however, ferns lack flowers and seeds and instead reproduce sexually by secreting microscopic spores or occasionally by vegetative means, as is the case with the walking fern.

How should ferns be cared for?
Although the term “ferns” refers to a vast range of plants, most ferns cultivated as indoor plants require the same fundamental maintenance:
- 1. Plant in soil that drains properly. While ferns don’t care much about the type of soil they are in, consistently moist conditions are bad for their roots. Pick a well-draining potting mix when you pot up your fern plants.
- 2. Set in a moderately lit area. Since ferns naturally grow beneath tree canopies, they like filtered or indirect light over direct sunshine. If you wish to place ferns near an east or west window, keep them a few feet away from the window to prevent scorching the leaves. Ferns do best in windows that face south or north. For ferns to flourish in your home, there is no requirement for strong lighting. Asparagus and maidenhair are two varieties that do well in low light.
- 3. Keep the ground wet. Ferns thrive in soil that is regularly and equally moist because they are water-loving plants. If you notice that the top of the soil is beginning to feel dry, water your ferns thoroughly right away. While wet soil is good, avoid overwatering since it might harm the plant and promote a bacterial or fungal infection.
- 4.Occasional mist. Ferns are a popular choice for terrarium cultivation since they enjoy the wetness in the air and require high humidity to thrive. If you see that the tips of your fern fronds are browning or if there isn’t much new growth, spritz them with a water bottle to keep them wet, or think about placing a humidifier close by. If spraying doesn’t work, think about moving your ferns into a location with higher humidity, such the kitchen or bathroom, and away from dry air.
Non-succulent plants are what?

Some succulent species might be challenging to distinguish from one another. Images of an echeveria and sempervivum, for instance, could be strikingly similar. This is due to the fact that both of these succulent genera belong to the same family of plants with fleshy leaves.
Which succulents aren’t cactus, exactly?

Succulents purify the air, right?

Where can I find fern plants?
According to ecology, ferns are typically found in dark, moist forests in both temperate and tropical regions. Some fern species can thrive both on soil and on rocks, whereas others are restricted to rocky environments and can only be found in the cracks and crevices of cliff faces, boulders, and taluses. Different fern species are connected to acidic rocks like granite, sandstone, and quartzites than they are to alkaline rocks like calcites and dolomites. A few species seem to be restricted to rocks that are serpentine and related. Up to two thirds of the ferns in the tropics may develop as epiphytes on the lower, shaded trunks and branches or in the tree crowns. Some ferns that are referred to as epiphytic are actually climbers that start on the ground and climb tree trunks. The lower leaves (bathyphylls) in these are often vegetative and frequently differ in shape from the higher-level leaves (acrophylls), which are completely or partially fertile in that they bear sporangia over their surfaces.
Both epiphytic and epipetric (rock-growing) ferns may exhibit structural adaptations to arid conditions that are comparable to those of some desert plants. These adaptive characteristics include specializations like hard tissues and thick texture; the surface cells, or epidermis, may be given with a very thick cuticle (a waxy covering); and it’s possible to find a lot of trichomes (plant hairs) or scales on the leaf and stem surfaces. Terrestrial ferns that grow on the ground, particularly those that flourish in salt marshes (such as leather ferns, Acrostichum) and in open, totally exposed areas, may also have these changes (e.g., bracken, Pteridium; lip ferns, Cheilanthes; and brakes, Pteris).
Do succulents require sunlight?
Depending on the type, succulents need six hours of sunlight each day because they are light-loving plants. You might need to gradually expose newly planted succulents to full sun exposure or give shade with a translucent screen because they can burn in direct sunshine.
Can you put ferns in pots outside?

- 4. Add organic compost to your soil to enrich it. Apply a thin layer of organic compost to the soil’s top eight to ten inches, then mix it in using a gardening instrument. Your fern’s growth will be sped up by rich soil.
- 5. Plant the ferns. Make a hole twice as broad and as deep as the fern’s rootball. Place your young fern in the planting hole after gently removing it from its pot so as not to damage its roots. Soil is added to the hole. Ferns should be at least two feet away from one another.
- 6. Cover your soil with a two-inch layer of mulch. A layer of organic mulch, such as pine bark or leaf mold, will keep the soil moist, maintain a cool temperature, and prevent weeds from growing.
