Cactus plant fungus can be a pain. There are, however, a number of ways to get rid of fungus on cactus plants.
Method #1: Cut Off The Infected Area
To start, use a sterilized knife or pair of clippers to remove any patches of fungus on the cactus plants.
Then, depending on the fungicide you use, treat those healthy areas once every two weeks for six to twelve months.
Follow the directions on the fertilizer container to fertilize your plant as necessary to encourage development and stop further disease outbreaks.
Additionally, make sure that it receives consistent watering throughout this time and try to avoid letting it become completely dry in between waterings since too much moisture may result in black patches in addition to root rot issues!
Method #2: Use Baking Soda and Hydrogen Peroxide
Making a solution of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is one of the most used techniques.
Pour two teaspoons into an empty spray bottle along with one quart of warm water.
Whenever you notice any indications or symptoms, such as leaf spot, that fungus on cactus plants has resumed its attack, spray your cactus plants well until they are completely moist, including the undersides and tops of leaves.
For six weeks straight, you should perform this procedure at least twice a week to completely eradicate the fungus on your cactus plants.
Method #3: Make Your Own Fungicide Solution
In an empty spray container, combine one tablespoon of liquid soap, hydrogen peroxide, and baking soda with one gallon of water.
To totally get rid of fungus on cactus plants, spray it abundantly onto your plants every two weeks for at least six months!
Method #4: Spray With White Vinegar Solution
Another choice is to carefully dip the leaves into a solution of one part white vinegar (or apple cider vinegar) to four parts water in an empty plastic bucket or container. Do this until the leaves are completely moistened but not dripping wet.
The fungicide that has remained on the surface should be allowed to dry naturally rather than being rinsed off because doing so will only remove around half of it. It is therefore better to leave it alone.
This remedy must be used within a week if it is homemade. If you purchase it, be sure to keep it in a dry, cold environment.
Method #5: Clean Your Cactus Plant Thoroughly With Soap and Water
The easiest option is to just give your cactus plant a thorough washing every day, or at least every other day, with soap and water, especially after working near them while they are dusty.
Before applying fungicide using method number three above, make sure to clean up any dust since it acts as an insulator to prevent fungi from drying out.
Spray two quarts of lukewarm water with one tablespoon each of liquid soap, hydrogen peroxide, and baking soda to clean all leaves, including the undersides.
Method #6: Use a Fungicide Solution
Fungicides can be used to treat your cactus plant if it develops a fungus infestation.
Fungicides come in a variety of forms, some of which function better than others and serve distinct needs. Be careful to pick the proper one for your situation!
Keep in mind that even if just one or two leaves exhibit symptoms, it is still crucial to spray them down because, if left untreated, this disease will soon spread throughout the entire plant.
Which fungicide is ideal for cacti?
Fungicides for the growing and dormant seasons that are organically approved include copper, sulfur, and lime. 3 tablespoons of hydrated lime, 2 pints of water, and 6 1/2 teaspoons of copper sulfate should be combined. Pour the mixture into a garden sprayer after filtering it through cheesecloth to get rid of any remaining impurities. Then, mix the liquid with 1 gallon of water. Spray the mixture liberally on your cacti, then repeat every seven to ten days or whenever it rains. Anthracnose and stem rot in cactuses can be treated with this medication. Pink pustules and light brown fungal lesions are the hallmarks of anthracnose. Younger cacti are frequently affected by stem rot, which appears as little yellow spots that eventually transform into brown spores and cause the plant to wilt and shrink.
How do I remove the white substance from my cactus?
White fuzz on cactus can hinder their growth and lessen their visual attractiveness. What then creates the white fuzz on cacti, and how may mealybugs be removed from cactus plants?
Pour rubbing alcohol into a garden spray bottle after combining water and rubbing alcohol in a 1:3 ratio. To get rid of the bugs, spray all the cactus that are covered with white fuzz. You might also add ladybugs to your cactus to eat the mealybugs and get rid of the white fuzz on the plants.
I’ve used the Bazos ladybugs on my plants, and they work incredibly well at organically removing mealybugs and other damaging pests like aphids. You can use them if you don’t want to use pesticides on your indoor plants and outdoor gardens.
Why is my cactus covered in mold?
In contrast to other species, this mold, which is brought on by the fungus Drechslera cactivorum, can completely obliterate a plant in as little as four days. The illness begins as yellow spots that quickly become brown and spread, depriving the cactus of water and covering it in spores that are a dark brown color.
How can fungus on succulents be removed?
Early indications of this fungus include round, gray-brown spots on the surfaces of leaves and stems. As the infection worsens, these spots turn fuzzy with mold. It is the type of fungus that spreads when the weather starts to cool down and get damp, typically in the early Spring or Summer. It thrives in a moist, shaded area with poor airflow.
Dishwashing soap is one of the most used home-made fungicides in the early signs of a plant affected by grey mold. Just make sure it doesn’t contain bleach or greasers. The damaged regions of plants with severe grey mold infections must be removed. It’s best to refrain from watering from the top as well.
Leaf stains
Succulents can get fungal leaf spots indoors and outdoors, although they are not harmful. What makes it annoying is that when the fungus becomes too accustomed to your plant, the small area will enlarge and start to resemble a blotch, which will probably eventually kill your plant.
A succulent with Leaf Spots can be treated in a number of secure and practical ways. You can either spray your succulent with a moderate solution of bicarbonate of soda (baking soda), using 1/2 teaspoon per gallon of water, or you can use an all-purpose fungicide.

Fusarium Wilt is a fungus that lives in the soil. It penetrates the plant through the roots and starts reproducing in the vascular tissues, obstructing the plant’s ability to absorb water, leading to severe stress, wilting, yellowing, and most likely, death.
Regrettably, there is currently no known cure for fusarium wilt in plants. The fastest removal and disposal of the infected plant is the best advised course of action for this fungus. Fusarium-contaminated soil must also be removed. This will aid in limiting the spread of the fungus.
Anthracnose
A series of fungal infections known as anthracnose are brought on by members of the Colletotrichum genus. Circular, pale, sunken, or brownish patches that are characteristic of this type of fungus will cause the plant tissues to dry up and become hard like bark.
The only way to save your succulent once it has been attacked by this fungus is to remove the afflicted leaves. To further prevent the spread of this fungus, it is best to replace the contaminated plant’s soil and pot in addition to thoroughly cleaning all of your instruments.
You can apply fungicides that contain chlorothalonil, copper sprays with copper diammonia diacetate, propiconazole, and systemic fungicide thiophanate-methyl to eliminate any remaining fungal bodies and to maintain control.
Rotten Root and Crown
In comparison to other fungal illnesses, root and crown rots are among the hardest to diagnose. They don’t exhibit any distinctive symptoms that could enable you to identify an infection in your succulent.
To give you an example, a plant with root rot will first begin to wilt, then the leaves will start to turn brown, and finally the stems will start to rot, causing the plant to topple over. The roots will turn brown beneath the earth and will easily separate if the soil is carefully scraped away.
Fine feeder roots typically maintain a healthy white to tan color and can hold the root ball together effectively even if the root crown is also diseased. However, as soon as the plant’s soil is removed, brown spots can be seen on the cortex of the roots as well as the root crown or stem base.
Sadly, therapy does not work well for root and crown rot. However, this can be prevented by lowering moisture. Simply use a well-draining container and give your succulents the appropriate amount of water to achieve this. Just enough to meet the requirements of your plant. Additionally, any mulch that is longer than 4 inches should be removed to avoid letting your plant remain in excessively moist soil.
Make your own fungicide spray at home.
You have control over the materials when you learn how to manufacture your own fungicide, many of which are already in your house. Here are some of the more widely used ingredients for creating fungicide for gardens and lawns:
- In a gallon (4 L) of water, add 4 teaspoons or 1 heaping tablespoon (20 mL) of baking soda (Note: many resources recommend using potassium bicarbonate as a substitute for baking soda.).
- For homemade plant fungicide, dishwashing soap is a common item that doesn’t contain bleach or degreaser.
- To make homemade plant fungicide stick to leaves and stems, cooking oils are frequently added.
- A common ingredient in commercial plant fungicides is pyrethrin, which is found in the leaves of the painted daisy flower. You may grow your own painted daisies and use the flowers to protect your plants from fungus. Flower heads should be dried before being ground or left to soak in 1/8 cup (29.5 mL) of alcohol overnight. Add up to 4 gallons (15 L) of water, combine, and then filter through cheesecloth.
- Some bacterial and fungal illnesses can be controlled by using a Bordeaux combination during the dormant season. You can create your own Bordeaux mixture using copper sulfate powder and pulverized limestone. 4-4-50 is the suggested strength for application during dormancy. With 50 gallons (189 L) of water, combine 4 parts of each. Reduce the recipe for this homemade plant fungicide to 6.5 to 8 teaspoons (32–39 mL) of copper sulfate and 3 tablespoons (44 mL) of limestone to 1 pint (.5 L) of water if you only need a smaller amount, such as for a gallon.

Why is a white substance forming on my cactus?
The substance that appears to be cotton fibers is actually a fine wax made by adult cochineal scale insects, and the little black specks may be their nymphs. On cholla (Cylindropuntia spp.) and prickly pear (Opuntia spp.) cactus, it is typical in this region. The white beards that resemble those on other cacti, such as the Peruvian old man (Espostoa lanata) and Peruvian old woman (Espostoa melanostele), are not an insect byproduct but rather typical, healthy changed tissues. Landscape chollas and prickly pears have a white waxy coating produced by cochineal scale that helps shield these actual bugs from predators and insecticides.
I’ve seen prickly pear pads covered in that white fluff almost entirely. Mild infestations, like the ones Doa Ana County Extension Master Gardener Dael Goodman and I saw at in Las Cruces earlier new week, are more typical. In New Mexico, there are multiple native cholla and prickly pear species. There are numerous of them in the Goodmans’ front yard, and we immediately noted that some species were more affected by the cochineal scale than others.
Topical pesticides, especially natural ones like petroleum oils and insecticidal soaps, are unlikely to be effective no matter what time of year it is if the insects are shielded by a white covering. Also, keep in mind that the ultimate goal isn’t to completely eradicate cochineal scale from your garden—partially that’s impossible—but rather to control the populations of insect pests until beneficial insects come to the rescue.
You will be shocked to see a bright red liquid that seems to appear out of nowhere if you squeeze a glob of the white goo that has healthy females hidden inside. Carmine, a natural dye used for millennia to color textiles and create artwork, is produced inside the bodies of cochineal scale insects. Because this carmine component is also utilized in red foods and cosmetics like sausages, lipstick, pie fillings, and vividly colored alcoholic beverages, check product labels for it. Before the firm converted to an artificial dye in 2006, it was used to create the vibrant color of Campari liquor, but a new generation of craft distillers and other producers are increasingly adopting it as a substitute for synthetic red components.
Goodman and I attempted to film the flowing red fluids squeezing the white tufts on her prickly pear pads with a small stick, but we hardly noticed any redness. The female cochineal population may be declining at this time of year, or those specific tufts may be so old that the residents have long since disappeared and have only left that waxy material behind. We’ll give it another go with a fresher sample in the summer.
Six cholla species and seven prickly pear species are covered in Robert DeWitt Ivey’s stunning reference work Flowering Plants of New Mexico. There are five yellow-flowered prickly pears in that group. Identification might be aided by paying close attention to the pad sizes and spine specifics. If you intend to approach closely, make preparations and carry tongs.
