How To Propagate Peruvian Apple Cactus

The cactus’ blossoms give way to thornless fruits with crunchy white flesh and delicious seeds that range in color from violet-red to yellow.

Peru contains 1,769 glaciers spread across its 28 distinct temperature zones, despite the fact that we rarely associate Peru with glaciers. The ancient Incas were serious astronomers because of the vast sky and steep mountains surrounding them, and they were the first ancient civilization in the world to designate constellations of both light and darkness. Even today, Cuzco’s principal thoroughfares are designed to line up with the stars on feast days.

The Peruvian Apple Cactus (Cereus peruvianus, or Cereus repandus syn.) blooms at night, with each bloom lasting just one night. The enormous, cream-colored blossoms give way to thornless fruits that range in color from violet to yellow and have crunchy white flesh and delicious seeds.

This gorgeous blue-green upright cactus, which also goes by the names huge club cactus and hedge cactus, grows in a single column and has three to five blades. They have a long lifespan and can easily reach heights of six or seven feet indoors after many years. They create a spectacular display in corridors, bedrooms, workplaces, and living spaces due to their upright growth.

The Peruvian Apple Cactus can spend the summer outside even close to the coast because it is resistant to salt spray.

This plant enjoys intense sunshine and a minimal amount of water because it is a cactus. Pick a location in your home that receives direct sunlight; a south-facing window is excellent.

When the Peruvian Apple Cactus is actively growing in the spring and summer, water it thoroughly. During the winter, give it much less water. Always wait a while before watering the soil.

Use a potting soil for cacti that drains properly. To prevent the soil from holding water, you might even add a little additional sand. When the cactus is vigorously growing in the spring and summer, use a slow-release organic granular fertilizer.

The young plants can be repotted each spring. Once they reach maturity, you will only need to repot them occasionally, always switching to a little larger pot size.

You may grow Peruvian Apple Cactus by cuttings from the top of the stem. Before planting, let the cutting sit for a week or two to callus over and dry off. During the spring or summer, you could also notice a few new, little plants or offsets sprouting at the base of the plant. These offsets are ready to be potted up as new plants right now.

Due to the Peruvian Apple Cactus’ nocturnal blooming, you might have to manually pollinate the flowers with a gentle artist’s brush. Numerous nighttime pollinators exist, including moths, flies, and bats.

Fruit will begin to grow in the late fall or early winter, right before the cactus goes dormant. The fruit are not only tasty but also nourishing because they are rich in beta carotene, fiber, and vitamin C.

Simply flip the pot every few months if you see your cactus leaning toward the light source, and it will grow straight and tall once more.

Cacti from cuttings can be propagated?

Probably the most frequent and straightforward method of propagation is stem cuttings. Stem cuttings are an effective method for multiplying many cacti. Stem cuttings from an existing plant are removed, then left to calluse and dry out. Eventually, the cuttings will begin to take root from the cut end and grow into a new plant.

Some cacti that are frequently multiplied via stem cuttings include:

  • Prickly pears or opuntia
  • Collapsed cactus
  • Globular and pincushion cacti

The rate of growth of Peruvian apple cactus

You could anticipate that a plant bearing the name Peruvian apple cactus would have its origins in Peruvian woodlands. Cereus peruvianus, however, is oddly endemic to Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Argentina. When cultivated outdoors, it forms tall, spiky columns that can grow up to 20 feet tall, earning it the labels “giant club cactus” and “hedge cactus.”

This plant can grow just as well indoors as it can outdoors, provided it has ample access to water and sunlight. The Peruvian apple cactus often needs to be pruned when planted inside since, if left unchecked, it can outgrow a tiny space. Under ideal circumstances, this plant grows between two and four feet every year.

Summer is when the Peruvian apple cactus blooms, and while the blossoms are lovely, they are also fleeting. The plant opens with spectacular starburst flowers in colours of pink, yellow, and brilliant white for one night each year before shutting down at sunrise. Flowers turn into fruits in the winter if fertilized within this brief window of opportunity.

Can cactus cuttings be propagated in water?

It’s time to get your cutting ready for planting in a pot once it has dried! Cactus propagation can potentially be done in water, just like with other houseplants, but it’s not a very usual procedure because they thrive in soil.

Your brand-new cutting will require excellent drainage to survive, much like other cacti (unless it’s a jungle cactus like the Christmas cactus). The roots of cacti have not developed to become used to extended wet periods. They enjoy a cool splash, but the soil shouldn’t be prone to being wet or humid afterward; instead, it should immediately dry out again.

It’s not too difficult to spot an excellent cactus soil because it will be grippy and contain little to no potting soil at all. You can either purchase a prepared cactus soil combination or create your own by mixing 1 part potting soil, 1 part perlite, and 1 part orchid bark (not too gritty) for your cutting.

As far as planters go, as long as they have proper drainage, you should be set to go. Standard plastic nursery containers are excellent, but some cactus growers like to use clay planters to provide even more drainage. Water can really evaporate through the walls of this substance since it is porous.

Can you plant a portion of cactus that has been chopped off?

A loved cactus plant might quickly lose a portion due to overly active kids, scavenging animals, an accidental bump, or an unplanned incident. You need not worry if it occurs to you because you are not required to discard the chopped piece.

Even if the main plant can still survive if a portion of its stem is lost, it may seem wasteful to toss the broken piece and ignore the rest.

Don’t discard the broken piece if your cactus accidently breaks off a portion of it. Instead, replant it from seed and let it grow.

Where should cacti be chopped to spread?

If you want indoor plants that practically care for themselves, succulents and cactus plants are the ideal choice.

As detailed here, stem or leaf cuttings can be used to readily propagate the majority of cacti and succulents. Always remove entire segments from cacti with segmented stems (such as Christmas cacti and prickly pears), as cuttings don’t divide segments in half.

Aloes, haworthias, and agaves are clump-forming succulents that can be divided by simply removing the plant from its container and slicing the rootball. Numerous Mammillaria and Echinopsis cacti can be separated, or individual heads can be removed and used as cuttings.

Select a healthy stem that is at least 10 cm long and use snips to cleanly cut it off. When handling spiky cacti, use tongs. Remove entire leaves from plants without stems by hand; don’t chop them off. Until the cut surfaces have healed over, leave cuttings on a window sill.
