It is tall and dignified, holds a special position on our landscaping artist’s palette, and has been employed in a variety of ways to give desert landscapes a southwestern feel. Let’s review some information on the plant itself before we look at the potential issues.
In the late spring and early summer, saguaros bloom and bear fruit. In late May and early June, its creamy white blossoms on the tips of saguaro branches put on an impressive display. Soon, the tips of the cactus’ main trunk and arms will be covered in those flowers. Native Americans in this region have been gathering and using the blooms, which are pollinated by bats, birds, and insects, for millennia. The flowers will eventually grow into a tasty, dark-colored fruit.
Once they have grown to a height of around 2 feet, saguaros living in the wild will expand by an average of about 2 inches every year. The majority of the taller saguaros in the desert are more than a century old.
Early on, the spines of young saguaros are not very protective, and seedlings that have germinated in the open frequently do not survive. Small mammals like mice, ground squirrels, and rabbits appear to value them highly. The necrosis of the gigantic saguaro is a naturally occurring condition that has the potential to be highly fatal. Although it mostly affects older plants, it can occasionally be detected in younger specimens as well. An Erwinia bacteria, which results in the saguaro’s soft-rot symptom, is the disease’s cause. Personally, I find it difficult to endorse this method due to the risk of unintentional plant damage.
While it is understandable that the landowner is devastated by the death of a large saguaro, it can help to think of the rot as a normal aspect of the desert environment. Many desert residents rely on these damaged plants for moisture since the active rot is a wet spot in a dry area. Additionally, pockets of dry rot that have been calloused over in surviving saguaros can provide as a haven for avian and other wildlife.
Saguaro cactus can also die if they are overwatered. When a plant stores water, the soft inner tissue expands, and when a plant uses that water during a drought, it contracts. The saguaro may contain more water than it can safely support, and when this happens, it may occasionally split open like a ripe watermelon. Make sure the plant doesn’t get more water than it truly requires to protect it. Squeezing the tissue surrounding one of the plant’s ribs between the thumb and forefinger is a useful technique to determine whether the plant needs irrigation. If the tissue is soft, the cactus needs to be watered well; nevertheless, if the tissue is rigid, it already has enough water stored.
Fertilization is not required for saguaros. The little that nature offers those developing in the wild enable them to thrive pretty well. They also have a distinct metabolism than other plants, which enables them to thrive unaided in these challenging circumstances.
