First off, the San Pedro cactus belongs to the Echinopsis Pachanoi species of cactus. Trichocereus Pachanoi is another name for it, which we discuss in more depth below. San Pedro refers to one specific species, Echinopsis Pachanoi, despite the fact that some people (inadvertently) use it to refer to a variety of various columnar Echinopsis cacti.
Before we dive into the nuances of identifying the San Pedro cactus, there are a few key terms you should be familiar with.
The projecting rows that extend vertically from the plant’s crown to its base are known as ribs. Always growing along the border of the ribs are spines and blooms. By forming shaded troughs or pockets between them and boosting the surface area to disperse heat, cactus ribs assist in keeping the plant cool.
Areoles are tiny, spherical, pale or black bumps that develop centrally down the ribs. The areoles produce clusters of spines. The areoles also produce flowers.
The sharp needles that emerge from the areoles to form the spines are quite self-explanatory. Cactus spines are leaves that have undergone extensive modification over a long period of time to minimize moisture loss and protect themselves from herbivores.
Do I have a San Pedro cactus?
Although it originated in the Andes, the San Pedro cactus (Trichocereus pachanoi) is now widespread in the southwest of the United States. Although the San Pedro cactus is typically grown for decorative purposes, it is also farmed for the component mescaline, a restricted chemical that can have psychedelic effects if taken, similar to the peyote cactus. While it is lawful to cultivate a San Pedro cactus anywhere in the globe, including the US, it is prohibited to remove the mescaline and use, trade, or sell it. One of the cacti with the fastest rate of growth, the San Pedro cactus can be distinguished from other cacti by a few distinctive characteristics.
Observe its expansion. Up to 20 feet tall and 6 feet broad, a San Pedro cactus can grow up to a foot every year.
Examine its shape. A San Pedro cactus is a tubular, vertically growing, typically armless cactus. The same crown can produce more than one stem.

A hallucinogenic San Pedro cactus?
Since many cacti contain phenethylaminealkaloids like mescaline, they are known to be psychedelic.

Can you eat San Pedro cacti?
Cacti are fleshy and appear to be suitable as vegetables. It’s crucial to understand that there are edible and deadly cacti varieties before you start eating them.
All authentic cactus fruit is safe to consume. After the spines are removed, some varieties of cactus, including cholla, dragon fruit, and prickly pear, can be used as vegetables. Other cactus species, such as peyote, Bolivian, and San Pedro, are poisonous and should not be consumed.
Cacti of many types are frequently planted as indoor and outdoor ornamental plants. Check to see if the cactus variety is poisonous or suitable for people or pets to eat before choosing it for your garden.
Exist San Pedro imitators?
Sometimes learning what a plant isn’t the greatest method to understand how to recognize it. Here are some images of various cactus species that are frequently mistaken for San Pedro cacti, along with some tips on what to look for.
Cereus Repandus (Peruvian Apple)
One of the cacti that people most frequently confuse with San Pedro is the Peruvian Apple, and it’s understandable why. They are both fast-growing columnar species with a similar color, same areoles, and similar growth rates. You’ll see two things if you glance at the image to the right (or below if you’re on a mobile device):
Ribs: Compared to San Pedro ribs, ribs from Peruvian Apple Cactus are significantly flatter and skinnier. Additionally, when viewed from the top, this deepens the troughs/pockets between the ribs, making them in some plants almost as deep as the center of the plant.
Spines: Compared to San Pedro cactus, Peruvian Apple cactus spines are typically much longer. When compared to San Pedro cactus, each areole on a Peruvian Apple Cactus often has one spine that is noticeably longer than the others.
Myrtillocactus Geometrizans (Blue Myrtle Cactus)
The columnar Blue Myrtle Cactus is a kind of cactus that is indigenous to northern and central Mexico. It can resemble San Pedro in appearance to the untrained eye, but there are some significant variances.
Blue spines Dark-black Myrtle Cactus spines have a dominating, very lengthy center spine.
Color: True to its name, the Blue Myrtle Cactus frequently has a vivid blue colour to its skin. San Pedro cactus can sometimes appear pale blue or grey, but it is much less overtly colored than Blue Myrtle.
Branches – The Blue Myrtle Cactus is a vigorous brancher, frequently “just a few years of growth are followed by pupping. Branches can grow up to halfway up the stem, and new branches can grow on top of existing ones to form a wild branch “a bushy appearance to the plant.
Pilosocereus Pachycladus (Blue Torch Cactus)
In the genus Pilosocereus, Pachycladus is the species that is most frequently farmed, however all of the species are together referred to as Blue Torch Cacti. These cacti are indigenous to South America’s Neotropics, with the majority of them being found in Brazil.
Spines: The spines of the blue myrtle cactus are pale in color, 5 to 10 mm long, and sufficiently dense to cover the spines from the areoles above and below it. A tufted hairy areole, which is a definite identifying characteristic, is present in several species of Blue Torch.
Color: The Blue Torch cactus is most easily recognized by its bright blue hue. It is clearly distinguished from the delicate blue-green of the San Pedro cactus because it is by far the most overtly blue of all the cacti species.
How can I recognize a cactus?
The physical characteristics of each cactus should be used as a starting point when distinguishing one from another. Some distinguishing physical characteristics to watch for are:
The Leaves
One essential aspect you may want to consider is the cactus plant’s leaves. Do your plants have any spines? You can determine this by examining their leaves. A leaf with spines will have needle-like, sharp edges, while a leaf without spines will have rounded edges. The color and shape of your cacti plant’s leaves can also provide useful information.
Chlorophyll and carotenoids, which are photosynthetic pigments, can be used to determine the color of leaves. Carotenoids give the plants their characteristic colors, whereas chlorophyll is in charge of receiving light energy from the sun and storing it as chemical energy.
Your cactus plant type may also be determined by the shape of the leaves. Succulent plants often have spines and needle-like leaves, whereas flat-leaved plants are typically stronger in nature since they can endure severe situations better. For instance, the leaves of a barrel cactus grow straight, whereas the leaves of a saguaro cactus are flat.
Similar to the shape and color, the different needle styles can also be used to identify the type of cacti you have, albeit the results are not always reliable. The more hardy and leafy kinds will typically have flat spines, whilst the more succulent and squishy forms would typically have needle-like spines.
How high can they grow?
When determining the type of cactus you have, you might also want to consider its height. Because plants that thrive at higher elevations typically have longer roots than those that do not, height and altitude can be utilized as a determining factor when choosing your plant type. The Saguaro Cactus, which can easily reach heights of 50 feet, is the tallest of all succulents. Hedgehog and pereskia, on the other hand, are little kinds that rarely grow taller than six inches. You can tell what kind of cactus plant you have by just measuring the height of the plant.
Shape and coloration
When there are no spines or leaves to go by, a cactus’ shape and color can also be utilized to determine its type. Shape typically gives some hints about the plant’s requirements for the climate, which in turn may give more information about the nature of the plant.
Although there are so many different kinds of cactus that you can identify, you might not be able to do so just by looking at it because of its color. Another spiny variety may have a green-brown body, whereas a white-spined barrel cactus may have green. The dwarf saguaro’s yellowish hue stands out sharply from, for example, the brown spines on a barbed wire cactus.
As you can see, there are a lot of physical characteristics to watch out for that could reveal what species of cactus plant your plants are. One piece of advice is to explore further if you notice something peculiar or unusual about a particular species because it might be what you’ve been looking for.
How are its flowering style and pattern?
The way a plant blooms is another physical characteristic that will reveal whether it is a terrestrial or epiphytic plant. While terrestrial plants have roots and require direct access to soil, epiphytes are plants that thrive in humid climates with little soil contact and depend on other plants for nutrition.
Another sign of a cactus’ type is the way its flowers are arranged. The saguaro and barrel both have radial patterns, and the hedgehog is another plant with radial patterns but more elongated ones. A species that forms columns, like the cardon, may have vertical stripes or zigzags with contrasting color patterns.
The most likely type of cactus you have is a cardon if it is columnar and has vertical stripes of contrasting colors. On the other hand, if your cactus has radial patterns and spines, it is probably either the barrel or saguaro type.
Although it’s not always reliable, the color of the flowers can also give you a hint about what kind of cactus your plant is. For instance, a hedgehog may have yellow blooms, or a kind of flower with a red top may be a cardon.
What about the seeds?
Depending on their environment, different cactus species generate different seeds. For instance, the Saguaro cactus produces smaller, fleshier seed pods, whereas the hedgehog produces much larger, spiky fruit. While the cardon is known to produce seeds that are round and glossy, some varieties, like the barrel cactus, will have a more oval or spherical appearance.
These various seed pod varieties can provide you hints about the kind of cactus you might grow in your garden. Perhaps after a lengthy development period, your plant that you’ve had for a while isn’t blossoming or generating any flowers? Even before planting, it may be quite beneficial to look at the seeds, since they might provide important details about the type of plant. If your cactus isn’t flowering or generating any flowers over a lengthy time of growth, it may not be blossoming due to its type or the climatic circumstances that type loves. Is it permitted to possess San Pedro cacti?
According to Australia’s Poisons Standard, mescaline is a category 9 poison (February 2020). While the peyote cactus and other mescaline-containing plants like San Pedro are forbidden in Western Australia, Queensland, and the Northern Territory, they are permitted for ornamental and gardening use in Tasmania, Victoria, and New South Wales[1].
Due to the prohibitions specified on Portaria SVS/MS no344, possession, manufacture, and sale are prohibited.

Peyote is permitted but mescaline and any salt of mescaline is prohibited (lophophora).
[3] Other plants, such the San Pedro cactus, are not exempt and may only be grown for decorative purposes. [4]
“Cacti and seeds from Echinopsis pachanoi, Echinopsis peruviana, and other species that contain the drug mescaline are prohibited. (3,4,5-trimethoxy-phenethylamin).” [5]
The decree defining the list of drugs categorized as narcotics on February 22, 1990 includes mescaline as one of those substances[6].
Lophophora williamsi has been “relegated” on February 22, 1990 after first being listed in table B of drugs in 1966 and then table A of dangerous substances in 1957.
No restrictions apply to cacti. The Anlage I BtMG governs mescaline. Without a license, it is forbidden to produce, possess, import, export, buy, sell, procure, or administer it. [7]
The cultivation, production, manufacture, possession, sale, purchase, transportation, storage, consumption, or distribution of mescaline are all prohibited under the NDPS Act in India.
It is prohibited to buy, transport, or sell mescaline because it is included under Table 1 of Italy’s “Tabelle delle sostanze stupefacenti e psicotrope.” Except for Peyote, psychotropic cacti can be bought legally from florists, garden centers, and online stores. [8]
Both mescaline and peyote are prohibited according to the Ley General de Salud. It does not mention the Peruvian Torch or the San Pedro cactus, thus they are completely lawful.
