How can an Echeveria plant be recognized?
Echeveria is frequently identified by its stunning rosette-shaped leaves with eye-catching, spoon-shaped leaves. Despite having a sharp tip in most cases, the edges of the leaf are smooth. As a polycarpic plant, echeveria blossom every year.
How do you tell if a root is succulent?

The Leaves

Your cactus plant type may also be determined by the shape of the leaves. Succulent plants often have spines and needle-like leaves, whereas flat-leaved plants are typically stronger in nature since they can endure severe situations better. For instance, the leaves of a barrel cactus grow straight, whereas the leaves of a saguaro cactus are flat.
Similar to the shape and color, the different needle styles can also be used to identify the type of cacti you have, albeit the results are not always reliable. The more hardy and leafy kinds will typically have flat spines, whilst the more succulent and squishy forms would typically have needle-like spines.
How high can they grow?
When determining the type of cactus you have, you might also want to consider its height. Because plants that thrive at higher elevations typically have longer roots than those that do not, height and altitude can be utilized as a determining factor when choosing your plant type. The Saguaro Cactus, which may often reach heights of 50 feet, is the tallest of all succulents. Hedgehog and pereskia, on the other hand, are little kinds that rarely grow taller than six inches. You can tell what kind of cactus plant you have by just measuring the height of the plant.
Shape and coloration
When there are no spines or leaves to go by, a cactus’ shape and color can also be utilized to determine its type. Shape typically gives some hints about the plant’s requirements for the climate, which in turn may give more information about the nature of the plant.

While terrestrial plants have roots and require direct connection to soil, epiphytes are plants that thrive in humid regions with little soil contact and depend on other plants for nutrition.
Another sign of a cactus’ kind is the way its flowers are arranged. The saguaro and barrel both feature radial patterns, while the hedgehog is another plant with radial patterns but more elongated ones. A species that forms columns, like the cardon, may have vertical stripes or zigzags with contrasting color patterns.
The most likely form of cactus you have is a cardon if it is columnar and has vertical stripes of contrasting colors. On the other hand, if your cactus has radial patterns and spines, it is probably either the barrel or saguaro type.
Although it’s not always reliable, the color of the flowers might also give you a hint about what kind of cactus your plant is. For instance, a hedgehog may have yellow blooms, or a kind of flower with a red top may be a cardon.
What about the seeds?
Depending on their environment, different cactus species generate different seeds. For instance, the Saguaro cactus produces smaller, fleshier seed pods, whereas the hedgehog produces much larger, spiky fruit. While the cardon is known to produce seeds that are round and glossy, some varieties, like the barrel cactus, will have a more oval or spherical appearance.
These various seed pod varieties can provide you hints about the kind of cactus you might grow in your garden. Perhaps after a lengthy development period, your plant that you’ve had for a while isn’t blossoming or generating any flowers? Even before planting, it may be quite beneficial to look at the seeds, since they might provide important details about the type of plant. How can Echeveria and Sempervivum be distinguished from one another?

Their bell-shaped flowers, which can be white, orange, pink, or red, are carried on stalks that protrude through the leaves. From a single base stem, echeveria offsets (chicks) spread out to produce clumps.
In Europe, sempervivums are indigenous. Their names, semper (always) and vivus, represent their importance as talismans (living). They have a reputation for surviving in subfreezing temperatures and maintaining their green foliage. Common names for Sempervivums include Houseleeks and Hen and Chickens. Open rosettes grow in bunches up to two feet wide and have a diameter of one to five inches. Sempervivum’s leaves are thinner than those of Echeveria, have pointed tips, and range in color from gray-green to red-brown. On fleshy stems up to 10 inches long, tiny star-shaped blooms in pink, red, or orange bloom. These succulents get their start by sprouting offsets from a stolon (a stem that can take root). The small offsets are able to roll away before developing roots because the stolon splits readily.
How can Aeonium and Echeveria be distinguished from one another?
Due to their relaxing appearance and simplicity of maintenance, succulents are a well-liked plant type. They come in a wide range of varieties and subtypes, some of which grow better in warm areas and others of which can adapt and do well in the cold. Even though some succulents are difficult to tell apart because of their similar appearances, there are some differences that, if you know what to look for, can help you determine the difference between echeveria and aeonium plants.
Despite having a rose-like look, echeveria and aeoniums may mostly be identified from one another by the way their leaves develop. What distinguishes succulent plants from sedum plants?
To illustrate our argument, we chose these five sedums for a group portrait. Despite the fact that two of them (the “Pork and Beans” plants on the left) are identical cultivars, none of them resemble one another. Sedum has several hundred species, and there are numerous cultivars with various colors, sizes, and shapes. Sedums fall under all of those classifications, including those for shrubs, ground coverings, indoor plants, and perennial flowers.

How to cultivate sedums inside:

Sedum plant care instructions:
- Sedums can be grown as perennial ground covers, shrubs, and flowering plants in USDA growing zones 5 to 9.
- Sedums should be planted in flower beds, either at the front of the border if they are creepers or mixed in with late-season perennials and ornamental grasses if they are taller or shrubbier.
- Sedums that can withstand droughts do best in the sun or partial shade (however the amount of sunshine may change the color of the leaves).
- Pork and beans are a good example of a crop that requires well-drained soil.
How frequently do I need to water my succulent?
During the months that are not winter, when the temperature is above 40 degrees, you should water your succulents every other week. You should only water your succulent once a month in the winter (when the temperature falls below 40 degrees), as it goes dormant at this period.
A few situations constitute an exception to this rule. Because their tiny leaves can’t hold as much water as other varieties with larger leaves, some varieties of succulents need to be watered more frequently. In the non-winter months, feel free to give these small leaf succulents a water if they appear to be thirsty. When they are thirsty, succulents generally exhibit a wrinkled appearance. But always keep in mind that being underwater is preferable to being overwater.
Why do leaves on succulents fall off?
Sometimes a plant’s natural defense against prolonged periods of extreme heat or drought is to shed its leaves.
Even if managing with fallen leaves is a common strategy, you don’t want it in a lovely decorative plant.
When kept outdoors in hot weather, you should place your succulents in the light shade to avoid them from becoming stressed by the intense heat.
Keep your succulents a little bit away from windows when you’re indoors so they can get lots of brilliant indirect light without getting burned by direct, enlarged sunshine.
Conversely, when affected by frost, succulents may also shed their leaves and exhibit other signs of stress.
The majority of succulents cannot endure freezing temperatures; they may burn black and lose their leaves.
A plant that has been harmed by frost but not killed will typically produce some new leaves to replace the ones that were damaged.
Instead than pulling or pruning away the damaged leaves, it is preferable to let them fall off naturally. NOTE: Consider using the leaves to create some new plants.
Succulents that need protection from the cold should be planted outdoors in protected areas and covered or mulched as necessary in the winter.
Keep indoor succulents away from places where they might get chilly air blasts during the winter (like as close to exterior doors).
