Cross-pollination is therefore required using a plant that has already blossomed. The best part is that every variety of succulent you’re trying to cross-pollinate will be subject to the following restrictions and recommendations.
The succulent of your choice must first be crossed with another succulent of your choice. This method is rather straightforward.
Take one blossom’s pollen and transfer it to the flower of another succulent by using a soft, little brush (like a paintbrush) or Q-tip inside the first flower. Additionally, this should result in a cross-pollinated seed pod from which you can plant the seeds. You can repeat this for every blossom on your succulents if they have more than one.
To prevent it from becoming infected with pollen from other plants, you should maintain your “new” plant in semi-isolation (unless you’re feeling very adventurous!).
Sadly, you won’t be able to know whether the cross-breeding was successful straight away. You’ll need to wait till the plant has some maturity before you can judge your success by how it appears.
How are hybrid succulents made?
If you’re a die-hard admirer of succulents, the “hybrid succulents” method, which is novel and intriguing, can undoubtedly excite you more.
What are they exactly? How does one get made? What are some of the most well-liked hybrid succulent varieties? Please continue reading for answers to all of these queries.
What is hybrid Succulent?
The act of cross-breeding two plants of different species to produce hybrid succulents, also known as hybridization of succulents, results in an entirely new species of succulent that you have probably never seen before!
This procedure, which includes cross-pollinating one type of succulent with the pollen of another species of succulent, is a little complex and demands a lot of patience. Additionally, until the succulent has developed, you won’t actually be able to tell if your hybridization was effective.  
The outcome is well worth the wait, which may even turn into an obsession, even if you can never predict in advance which specific qualities and attributes will be passed down to the new plant.
 
How do you create one?
Get at least two of your succulents to bloom at the same time if you want to try hybridizing some of your succulents. Once you have, apply a delicate, little paintbrush or Q-tip inside one blossom to collect its pollen before transferring it to the flower of another succulent.
You should be able to tell if your hybridization was effective in a matter of weeks to months if you see that the flower’s base has enlarged.
Until the seeds are gathered and sown, be sure to keep the pollinated plant in a semi-isolation. By doing this, you will stop insects from pollinating your plant with those of other plants.
You now get the delight of naming the outcome of your labor of love after seeing it. Either integrate the two names of the hybridized plants into one, or come up with a brand-new name!
Some of the most popular hybrids
As you may already be aware, there are many cross-bred succulents in existence today, with some of the most well-known genera being;
- Any type of Echeveria, as these succulents are quite simple to hybridize. If the plant’s name ends in “veria,” you may be sure that it has been cross-bred with this genus.
- x Graptosedum, a genus that combines Sedum and Graptopetalum.

- Little Jewel and Pachyveria haagei, two cross-bred Pachyphytum and Echeveria plants, are examples of x Pachyverias.
- x Gasteraloe, which are hybrids of the Gasteria and Aloe genera. The Gasteria Flow Spiky Aloe is a commendable example of this genus.
Step One
Pick healthy leafy plants. When you begin with a healthy mother plant and healthy leaves, your chances of success are higher. Instead of dried and flat leaves, search for full, plump leaves. Select leaves that are evenly colored and free of any stains, blemishes, or markings. Use only leaves that are not ripped, torn, damaged, or irregularly shaped. Remove the leaves off the stem gently.
Step Two
Your thumb and forefinger should be used to carefully twist the leaves from the stem. Some leaves are loosely linked to the stem while others are securely attached. To remove the entire leaf, gently wriggle it back and forth.
The entire leaf, including the base where it connects to the stem, is what you desire. The leaf won’t survive if the base does not separate or if it sustains harm.
Step Three
When employing this method of propagation, it is better to use more than one leaf because you might not have a 100 percent success rate. Pick a few wholesome leaves, then spread them out to dry. Await the healing of the leaf wounds. This can take anything from a day or two to a week or so. At the leaf’s base, where it separated from the stem, a callus or scab will develop. Throughout this procedure, the leaves must be kept in a dry, warm, and shaded area. Before putting the leaves in potting soil, they must be dry and calloused; otherwise, they would rot and perish.
Step Four
Sprinkle rooting hormone on the leaves (optional). This is not required. In none of my propagations have I ever applied a rooting hormone. The calloused leaf end should be dipped into the rooting hormone before being promptly inserted into a suitable potting mix.
To secure the leaf, compact the earth around it. The use of a rooting hormone is optional, so you are free to omit this step if you like. Simply insert the calloused end of the leaf, unaided by a rooting hormone, directly into the potting mix.
Instead of burying the leaves in the soil, spread them out on a bed of suitable potting soil. This is the approach I took. To make room for fresh plant growth, leave some gap between the leaves.
Step Five
Avoid the sun’s direct rays. Keep the leaf cuttings out of direct sunlight as you wait for them to take root. You can put them away from direct sunlight in a shaded spot. Leaf cuttings exposed to full sun or direct sunlight will shrivel and burn.
Step Six
Spray the leaves with water from a bottle. If your area has a dry environment, mist the soil every few days or perhaps every day. Mist the soil every few days or until it feels dry if you reside in an area with a more humid environment and the soil remains wet.
Roots will begin to spread. You may start to notice tiny pink roots emerging from the wound after around four weeks. This might be simpler to see if you lay the leaves flat on the ground. If the cut end of the leaves is buried in the ground, you won’t be able to see the roots unless you dig them up.
To keep the emerging roots from drying out, you can cover them with a thin layer of soil. Keep misting the soil every few days or if it becomes dry.
A new plant with its own leaves eventually appears where the roots are growing after about four weeks or more. This may require a few weeks to several months. The leaf you used to spread the plant will naturally begin to wither.
You have the option of gently twisting the leaf off or letting it fall off naturally. Be careful not to harm the baby roots when removing the mother leaf. Every few days or when the earth is dry, you keep missing the young plants.
Step Seven
Embrace the new plant. It’s time to move the succulent into its own pot when the baby plant becomes bigger and the mother leaf starts to wilt. Gently remove the withered mother leaf from the new plant if it is still present.
Use a good potting mix to transplant the young plant into its own container. Perlite and cactus mix were used.
Step Eight
Keep the young plants out of direct sunshine. Because they are still young and fragile, the new plants cannot withstand full sun. To prevent scorching the young plant, place it in a shady or partially shaded spot away from direct sunshine.
Step Nine
Up until they form roots, succulent cuttings require a little bit more water than mature plants. Every few days or anytime the soil feels dry, you can lightly water or mist the soil. When the plant is more established, water it according to your usual succulent plant care regimen, allowing the soil to dry out in between.
These new baby plants might result from leaf cutting propagation in large quantities. From a single leaf, you can occasionally grow more than one plant.
Succulents can you pollinate them?
It is simple to cross-pollinate succulents. Stem cuttings are the most frequent method of propagating succulents. A plant that is genetically identical to its parent is produced through rooted stem cuttings. You must cross-pollinate two distinct succulent cultivars if you want to combine their genetic makeup.
How are hybrid cacti made?
It is the same as trying to create actual species to make known hybrid cactus. The plants must be taken out of the general collection before the flowers open, cross-pollinated, and then restored only after the flower has died in order to be sure of the cross. If more than one species was utilized to cross with, the dead flowers or fruits that were pollinated are typically marked with a small piece of thread wrapped around them or tagged. When naming hybrids, keep in mind that the name only pertains to the clones of plants that were formed from a single seed in the fruit, as every additional plant from the same fruit’s seed is actually a different hybrid clone.
It is chance whether you got the cross you desired or if the plant outbred with anything else compatible in your collection after many amateurs hybridize plants while they are still in the general collection, especially if flies and bees are around.
Roses are emasculated in this way to assure the desired cross and eliminate the possibility of outbreeding with nearby suitable plants. However, a large number of current cactus hybrids are simply the consequence of accidental cross pollination, with the intention that the offspring may resemble one of the chosen parents or be something desirable.
How are hybrid houseplants created?
Pollen is transferred between two types of the same plant in order to produce a hybrid plant. More specifically, the stamen of one plant’s flower pollinates the pistil of another flower, which is its female counterpart. You can collect, plant, and nurture the hybridized seeds found in the ensuing fruits.
Even though you have no control over how the hybridization procedure will turn out, you might still be happy with the new plants you developed from collected seeds. For instance, your hybrid plant can have a mouthwatering new color from the parent plants. Just remember to keep your attachments to your creations in check because you could never see the same plants again. The steps to creating your own hybrids are as follows:
- Pick two variants from the species of flowers you want to work with and the type of species you want to work with. Selecting two cultivars that bloom roughly at the same time is crucial. Selecting species-specific cultivars that bloom several weeks or months apart is not recommended.
- Choose the plant that will serve as the female (the pistil) and the one that you wish to collect pollen from (the stamen, male parts).
- By pinching it off with your fingers, remove the stamen from the female plant (the long, thin stalk in the center of a flower). Your plant might be able to self-pollinate if you skip this phase, but it might be challenging because the flowers aren’t yet fully open enough for you to easily get inside.
- Remove the male flower’s stem. Before transferring the pollen to the female, you might need to snip off the petals using a pair of cuticle scissors to gain access to it.
- Push the male flower’s anthers—the pollen that is located on top of the stamen—into the female flower. To hand pollinate, lightly rub the two plants together. Pollen can also be moved from a male flower to a female blossom using a cotton swab or paintbrush. Toss the male blossom away.
- Carefully cover the female flower with a plastic bag to stop wind, insects, or birds from naturally cross-pollinating it.
- By marking the female flowers, you can keep track of your hybridization efforts. What kind of male flower did you use to fertilize the female flowers?
- The seeds that are produced when the female plant’s ripe fruits are harvested, stored, and labeled (fruits typically appear after the flowers have died).
- The following year, plant the hybrid seeds to create your first hybrid plant.
Can succulent cuttings be planted directly in the ground?
What is there to love other than a succulent? Obviously, a full garden of succulents! Fortunately for us, it’s simple to propagate a variety of these resilient, vibrant plants at home. We can’t wait to see succulents growing all year long in containers around the house and garden; there are various easy ways to reproduce them.
Propagating by Division: Plants that have gotten too leggy perform best with this method, which produces new succulents from cuttings. Start by delicately removing any leaves that may be attached to the stem below the rosette; be sure to preserve the leaf’s base while you do so. After all the leaves have been eliminated, cut the rosette with shears, leaving a brief stem intact. The cuttings should be let to dry in an empty tray for a few days until the raw ends have calloused. The cuttings can then be rooted in either water or soil.
Soil: After the stems have calloused, set the cuttings on top of a shallow tray filled with well-draining cactus/succulent soil. From the base of the cuttings, roots and little plants will start to emerge in a few weeks. Once the roots start to show, water sparingly once a week; take care not to overwater. The parent leaf will eventually wither; carefully remove it while taking care not to harm the young roots. Your propagated succulents can be replanted once they have established roots. As soon as the plants are established, keep them out of direct sunlight.
Water: After the stem has calloused, place a cutting with the end barely visible above the water’s surface on the lip of a glass or jar filled with water. Pick a sunny location for your glass. The incision will eventually produce roots that extend toward the water. Once roots have sprouted, your new succulent can either be replanted in succulent potting soil or allowed to remain submerged in water as illustrated above.
Offsets are little plants that develop at the base of the main specimen, and many species of succulents, such as aloe, hens and chicks, and some cacti, will generate them. Check for root growth after an offset has developed for two to three weeks before carefully twisting, cutting, or using a sharp knife to separate it from the main stem. Be cautious to prevent destroying any already-formed roots. Follow the directions above for propagating in soil or water, letting the offsets dry, establish roots, and then repot when they have had time to callus any exposed regions. Removing offsets has the added benefit of enhancing the health of your current succulents and redirecting energy into the growth of the primary plant.
