How To Grow Large Succulents

The right conditions will help your succulent grow bigger more quickly. A few hours of sun exposure per day is all that most succulents (but not all) require to grow healthily and keep their form and frequently their color.

In light of the foregoing, it would be helpful to understand the kind of succulent you are attempting to grow larger. A position where they receive at least 4-5 hours of sun each day is required for a plant like an Echeveria. Echeveria will thrive in full sun when planted in the ground.

Since many succulents can burn if they are in pots and placed in direct sunlight on hot summer afternoons, it would be ideal to position potted plants in areas that receive morning sun and afternoon shade. Growing succulents that require sunlight, like the Echeveria, indoors is not advised because they will almost surely wither away after a few weeks. In general, a Haworthia will thrive in a bright but shaded location.

Another thing to keep in mind is that most succulents are not frost hardy, so it would be better to bring them inside for the winter until the risk of frosts has gone if you live in a cold region and want your succulents to survive and get larger.

Use succulent potting mix

When succulents have the best growing medium to support their growth, plants will expand larger and more quickly. You may grow big, happy, healthy succulents with succulent potting soil.

While many succulents will grow in ordinary potting soil, they probably won’t get as big or as attractive.

The nursery’s potting soil has the ideal ratio of minerals and nutrients, and the way our plants look says it all.

Remember that some succulents grow all year long, while others dormant in the winter and others in the summer. Aeonium Kiwi is inactive over the summer, so it’s unlikely that you’ll have much luck attempting to get it to grow larger during that time. Again, when trying to develop a succulent, it is really helpful to know what it is.

Leaving dormant succulents alone is the best course of action. Placing a summer-dormant plant in direct sunlight will help it survive the hottest parts of the summer.

In order to find out what kind of growing conditions your succulent like and if it can actually get bigger, it is best to know its name.

Can succulents reach very huge sizes?

Some succulent species grow more quickly than others, giving them the appearance of being larger than other succulents.

One of the fastest-growing succulents, the Kalanchoe, can grow exponentially large in comparison to other succulents. Within a few weeks, they can develop from cuttings into fully rooted plants.

The Kalanchoe is sometimes regarded as invasive due to the way it spreads. With very little to no work on your side, they can quickly produce additional plants (or pups). In just a few months, a single two-inch Kalanchoe plant can yield dozens of pups and become very large.

The methods a succulent can expand are numerous. Some succulents, like the Haworthia, grow large by making pups, or replicas of themselves. If given ample room, they will continue to spread.

Some succulents develop on their own into enormous plants. One succulent that appears quite small when purchased but can grow into a significantly large plant is the jade plant, or Crassula ovata.

Another large-growing succulent that is better suited to being planted outdoors as a landscape plant is the agave.

How long does it take a succulent to become extremely large?

The growth pace of your succulents will depend on where you plan to plant them and the varieties you choose.

For instance, the fastest-growing succulents, like Echeveria, can expand from a 2 inch plant to 6 to 8 inches in just a year, whilst the slowest-growing succulents, like Haworthias, might take up to a year or even longer. to increase in size from 2 to 5 inches.

I mentioned before that I couldn’t generalize about all succulents. It is already known that all succulents require time to mature. However, when considering succulents as a whole, some do develop more quickly than others.

Other factors that might have a big impact on the growth of the succulents include watering, sunlight or lack thereof, the soil they are planted in, and the season.

These plants go through stages throughout the year where they are either actively developing or dormant.

Do succulents enlarge in larger containers?

Because a small pot can only carry so much soil due to its size, your plant won’t receive enough nutrients to thrive. A small container also restricts the roots, which finally prevents a plant from growing properly.

Bigger Plant Pots Retain More Water

Succulents grow better when beginning gardeners give them plenty of room to expand. Even though a huge container can keep your succulent alive, it does not promote good growth. The succulent cannot fill the plant container with roots because huge pots have plenty of room for them.

In a pot that is the right size, the roots recoil and strike the bottom and sides, which encourages the succulent’s rapid growth. While roots are more likely to rot in wet soil, containers with little soil won’t retain much moisture.

Why Choose a Pot with an Appropriate Depth or Length?

For the health of your pudgy plant, the depth of the container is a crucial factor to take into account. The cause is that excessively deep or tall pots contain a great deal of soil, which might not be ideal for wholesome growth.

Additionally, planters with a large diameter typically hold on to too much moisture. Although the taproot needs room to spread out, too much space will cause the soil to become drier.

What happens if you cut a succulent’s top off?

A succulent cannot return to its original compact height and shape once it has been stretched out. But don’t worry!

Start by using good-quality scissors to trim off the succulent’s top (I adore this pair so much! Definitely worth every cent! Leave 2-3 leaves on the base for at least an inch or two. If you leave a few leaves on the base to absorb sunlight, the base will thrive.

I’ve seen bare stems produce new offshoots, but it takes a lot longer than when I leave a few leaves on the stem. You can trim some of the stem to shorten the cutting if the cutting (the top portion you cut off) is too long for your taste.

Allow the base and the cutting to dry for a few days. You can plant the cutting in soil and start watering it once the cut end has calloused over (totally dried out and appears “scabbed”).

Cuttings do, in my experience, require a little bit more frequent watering than a fully rooted plant. To prevent the stem from becoming too soggy and rotting, use a soil that has a really good drainage system. Here is more information on how to grow succulents from cuttings.

Within a few days, maybe, but most probably within two to three weeks, the cutting should begin to give off roots. You should reduce watering as the roots take hold in order to put the plant on the same “schedule” as fully rooted plants.

Within a few weeks, the base, or original plant, will begin to produce additional offshoots. This plant can still be taken care of in the same manner as before the cut.

The leaves you initially left on the base plant can eventually wilt or drop off. Although highly common, this won’t always occur.

But if they do come off, don’t panic! Without the “parent leaves,” the young rosettes will still be able to develop.

What succulents have the largest growth?

Knowing what kind of succulents you are or wish to grow will help you care for them properly. Some succulent species are still too small, such as Blossfeldia liliputana, a tiny cactus with a mature diameter of around half an inch. The Baobab tree (Adansonia digitata), on the other hand, is regarded as the biggest succulent in the world.

Plant Some of them on the Ground

Growing succulents in the ground in cold climates with frequent frost is not recommended because the majority of them are not frost resistant and may perish.

Succulents, however, can take advantage of the available area in temperate temperatures when they are propagated on the ground. They grow large and stunning.

Feed Cleverly

In their growing season, it will be ideal to feed them more frequently, once every 14 to 20 days, with a balanced liquid fertilizer in a little amount that has been diluted to 1/4 of the required strength, much like commercial growers do. In winter, avoid feeding in USDA zones lower than 9.

Do succulents grow quickly?

The growth rates of various succulent species vary. Climate, soil type, irrigation, and fertilizing all affect how big and fast a plant grows. While fast-growing ground cover species like Sedum can spread up to 1″ each month during the growing season, slow varieties will stay neat and compact in a pot.

Do succulents proliferate?

Many indoor gardeners like the group of plants known as succulents. Cacti and succulents are both members of the succulent family. They have the benefit of growing gradually, requiring little maintenance, and not quickly outgrowing their surroundings. They are straightforward plants that require direct sunlight, soil that drains well, and very little, if any, fertilizer. The ideal soil is sandy. Cactus mixes that are sandy with a little gravel can be bought. It’s not required to use a lot of organic material. There is sporadic watering. When you consider where these plants originally came from, a hot, dry climate with arid soils and little to no rainfall gives you an idea of what to expect from them.

There are various methods for propagating succulents. They rarely blossom and then generate seeds that will germinate. The typical method is known as vegetative propagation. In essence, the original plant is being replicated.

Division or separation

While certain cacti will have baby plants grow along the ribs or leaf margins of the plant, most succulents grow by division. The plantlets can be removed once they are large enough to be handled without difficulty. And other succulents are divided, when the parent plant is mature, new plants sprout all around it. The container eventually fills up as more tiny plants emerge and encircle the larger surrounding ones. Small plants can be gently removed from the pot along with the plant and soil. Before removing the plant from the container, give it a good drink so that more soil will cling to the roots. The little plants can’t grow until they have roots. It could take a while for roots to form if they don’t already have any. Put the young plants in pots. See the instructions on callusing below if the tiny plants are broken off or lack roots.

Cuttings and callusing

By taking cuttings from the parent plant, a few succulents can be multiplied. Sometimes it’s due to a damaged plant or an elbow that was misplaced that caused an unceremonious freefall to the ground. Sadly, the damaged area won’t heal and grow again, however the damaged area can be used to create a new plant. The fact that the shattered piece cannot be repaired right away is crucial. It requires some time for it to “callus” or dry out.

The freshly cut piece will perish if it comes into contact with wet soil. For large portions, Michigan State University Extension advises letting the cuttings lie for a few days or more. The moist, damaged region eventually develops a rough skin or callus over the tissue. You can bury the callused plant section in slightly moist soil. Insert the piece very briefly. It won’t grow if it is set in too deep. The small plant might need to be supported by having it lean against the side of the container, on a craft stick, or tongue depressor. Succulents frequently take many months to develop roots. Small plants shouldn’t be placed near or on a cold window sill because the roots will take longer to develop. After callusing, a full-grown leaf or branch that is broken off a succulent plant like a Haworthia or a Euphorbia may begin to take root. It won’t, though, if the Aloe vera leaf is broken off.

One size or one guideline does not apply to all succulents because there are so many variations. When learning about plants, smart gardeners are always coming to this realization. Bring a succulent indoors. They make charming and well-mannered house guests.

Are succulents tolerant of crowds?

Speaking with individuals about succulent care or watching succulent care “in the wild” has made me aware of some of the misconceptions around succulent plants in the horticultural community. Just stroll through the nurseries in garden centers, where staff members are highly qualified. There are numerous excellently kept ornamental plants, fruit trees, and beautifully managed bedding plants, all of which have been nourished, watered, and maintained. then go for the section with succulents. You’ll find plants that have been improperly labeled, overwatered, underwatered, and generally neglected. In response to requests for assistance from merchants and landscaping contractors, I pondered this for a long time.

Successful succulent care is a synthesis of numerous elements, just like taking care of other plants. soil, water, fertilizer, exposure, control of pests and diseases, upkeep, and most importantly, observing and asking questions about the health of the plants.

Observing the plants and wondering what is going on with them. Yes, I believe that this is the most crucial element in keeping succulent plants healthy and beautiful. Applying what you have learnt to this group of plants will go a long way toward success with them if you are a gardener with prior success cultivating other types of plants. A plant is most likely not healthy if it does not appear to be so. Like any other plant that does not appear to be healthy, a plant that is unhealthy is likely dealing with challenges relating to soil, water, fertilizer, pest and disease control, upkeep, or a combination of these issues.

Due to their adaptation to places where water is scarce for extended periods of time, succulent plants differ somewhat from normal herbaceous perennial plants. As a result, their relationship with water plays a significant role in what makes them special. When it comes to gathering and preserving water, succulent plants are particularly effective. Additionally, they are more vulnerable to issues if exposed to excessive water. One of the most important determining aspects in maintaining the health of succulents is water management.

Here are some general care instructions for succulents, including everything from water to soil to sunlight.

Soil

The secret to soil mix in containers and in the landscape is good drainage and aeration. The majority of commercial soil mixtures are a little too dense and hold a lot of water for succulents. Adding coarse perlite, crushed lava, or pumice to conventional potting mixtures will usually be sufficient to transform them into effective succulent potting mixtures. Normally, I advise mixing 1 part amendment with 4 parts potting mix. For succulents like cactus that require even more drainage and aeration, the proportion of amendment can be increased.

Water

Thick stems and leaves that effectively gather and store water are characteristics of succulent plants. Traditional plant varieties have thin leaves and require more frequent hydration and watering. Even though the soil is damp, a plant like a coleus may wilt on a hot day. For the coleus to have more humidity and water availability, more regular watering is required. The succulent is less prone to wilt since it has water stored in its leaves and stem. Before being watered, succulent plants prefer to get close to being dry. The plant’s root ball stores the rest of the remaining moisture when the earth dries out. It’s time to water when this area is almost completely dry. Water the plant thoroughly so that the soil is completely saturated and some water runs out the bottom of the plant. Watering a succulent is very much the same as watering any other plant, only not as frequently.

When the environment is unfavorable, there is an exception to how you water a succulent. Poor air circulation, cloudy, dark days, and inadequate lighting may be examples of this. The plant will dry out extremely slowly in these conditions, so it will require controlled watering—giving it tiny doses of water—to prevent being overly wet for an extended period of time. Again, keeping plants healthy requires paying attention to what they need.

Fertilizer

Like most plants, succulents like being fed. Succulents vary from other plants in that they require less fertilizer less frequently since they are so effective. I do not suggest giving succulents any particular fertilizer. As you develop your plant-growing skills, experimenting with various fertilizers may improve the quality of your plants and/or blooms. Use a balanced fertilizer in the interim, such as 10-10-10 or 20-20-20. To maintain a healthy, growing plant, a fertilizer that is well-balanced is essential. An overabundance of fertilizer will promote excessive growth, which gives the plant a weedy appearance. Insufficient water will cause the plant to go into suspended animation and appear to be motionless. I advise halving the stated dosage rate and fertilizing no more frequently than once per month. Since most succulents become dormant throughout the winter, it’s usually not required to fertilize them.

Exposure

Succulent plants, like the majority of plants, prefer a climate with plenty of sunlight and clean air. Many people have misconceptions about succulents. One of the topics that people misinterpret is sunlight. When the topic of succulents is brought up, many people immediately think “desert.” In actuality, succulent plants grow most attractively when given a little sun protection. Succulent plants can develop good color and form without being dried out by the heat of the midday sun if they are grown in a few hours of early sun throughout the warmer months of the year. Shade fabric, lattice, or even the partial shadowing offered by a tree will help break up the heat of the sun in a southern exposure when the sun is shining on the area all day. More light exposure will aid the plant in preserving its good shape and color as winter draws closer. The plant will seem parched and burnt out if it receives too much sunlight. Too little sunshine causes the plant to extend out in search of more light, losing its beautiful compact structure.

Cold Tolerance

Information on the cold tolerance of several succulent plants was lacking until recently. If you don’t know a plant’s resistance to cold, I advise thinking it will freeze or suffer harm if the temperature falls below 32 degrees Fahrenheit, or freezing. Plants can be protected from light frost using inexpensive materials like frost cloth. These materials work well to increase your level of protection by 4 to 6 degrees.

Pest and Disease Control

Aphids are always going to be aphids. Like other plants, succulents will be attacked by insects. The idea is to observe your plants, look more closely, and explore anything that seems abnormal. Like any other plant, succulents require the ideal exposure or location, as well as decent soil, appropriate watering, and fertilizer. You are less likely to encounter bugs if these factors are properly balanced.

Succulent plants are susceptible to the same bugs and diseases that affect other plants, which is a fact of life. Succulents require the same level of pest and disease monitoring as other plants. As with other plants, aphids typically target the blossoms and new growth on succulents. Like other plants, measly bugs live on the roots of the plant and lodge between the leaves near new development. They can also infest the soil. Earwigs and snails both eat on the leaves. Succulent leaves may get powdery mildew, especially after extended periods of bad weather. Not to mention the ants, of course. Farmers are ants. Ants use plants like succulents to develop bugs that will help feed all of their ant companions, just as you may rototill the dirt and plant carrot seeds for your habit of drinking carrot juice. Any ants you see on your plants, get rid of them.

Therefore, these so-called succulent plants are not bug-proof. Although they are hardy and can endure an infection for a long time, healthy, attractive plants must be watched over, and when an infestation does arise, it must be treated with.

You decide how to handle an infestation. To help identify the bug or disease, you may speak with someone at your neighborhood nursery or your acquaintance who is an avid gardener. You decide whether to utilize organic materials or nuclear weapons, water, soap, q-tips, or chemicals. The most important thing is to address the issue as soon as you become aware of it.
