There are actually several techniques to graft a cactus, but the lateral method is the easiest and most successful. And this is the procedure.
Step 1: Cut the rootstock’s head off. Although you can cut it at any desired height, it is advised that you leave at least two or three inches above the earth. Also, use a clean, sharp knife to make your cuts as accurately as possible.
Step 2: Remove the second cactus’ head to create a scion. Make sure the cut has the same diameter for the scion and rootstock as much as feasible.
Step 3: Align the scion so that it is on top of the cut-off section of the still-rooted rootstock.
Step 4: To secure, use some rubber bands. To hold the pieces together, continue doing this from the top down and around the pot and cactus.  
As soon as you’re finished, you can take off the rubber bands because the two cacti you grafted ought to be permanently joined by then.
Important: When grafting, you must move quickly and effectively. Your scion and rootstock risk drying out if you keep them outside for an extended period of time.
Can any succulents be grafted?

Place the scion such that the vascular tissue inside both plants is at least somewhat aligned on top of the cut surface of the stock plant. Flat grafting is a type of grafting that works best on fleshy plants like cacti.
By encircling the top of the scion and the bottom of the stock plant’s pot with a rubber band, the scion is held firmly in place. As an alternative to using a rubber band, you may simply tie a piece of string around the pot.
Use a sharp, sanitized knife to cut through the stems of the scion and stock plant at an angle. The succulent plants with narrow stems are grafted using this technique, which is known as side grafting.

Can a succulent be rooted from a cutting?
Succulents that are fully established don’t require daily watering, but leaves and cuttings do. Having said that, you should avoid giving them too much water because doing so will turn them orangey-brown and eventually kill them.
When working with leaves, place them on top of the soil while making sure that their ends don’t actually touch it. Water the leaves whenever the soil becomes dry. To soak the soil’s top, I use a spray bottle.
The cut end of the leaf should be inserted into the soil, according to some experts, but the majority of the leaves I attempted to plant in this manner either perished or just developed roots without sprouting new plants.

As soon as the plants are established, keep them out of direct sunlight.
Water: After the stem has calloused, place a cutting with the end barely visible above the water’s surface on the lip of a glass or jar filled with water. Pick a sunny location for your glass. The incision will eventually produce roots that extend toward the water. Once roots have sprouted, your new succulent can either be replanted in succulent potting soil or allowed to remain submerged in water as illustrated above.
Offsets are little plants that develop at the base of the main specimen, and many species of succulents, such as aloe, hens and chicks, and some cacti, will generate them. Check for root growth after an offset has developed for two to three weeks before carefully twisting, cutting, or using a sharp knife to separate it from the main stem. Be cautious to prevent destroying any already-formed roots. Follow the directions above for propagating in soil or water, letting the offsets dry, establish roots, and then repot when they have had time to callus any exposed regions. Removing offsets has the added benefit of enhancing the health of your current succulents and redirecting energy into the growth of the primary plant.
What kind of rootstock works best for grafting cacti?
There are several reasons why cacti are grafted. One goal may be to mechanically create a new species, but other benefits include the production of disease-free stems, the replacement of rotting stems with new ones, and the improvement of photosynthesis in plants that are incapable of it. Cactus plants can take on unusual shapes, including weeping plants, through the process of grafting.
Grafting is frequently used on fruiting plants because it raises an existing cultivar’s maturity for earlier fruit production. The scion develops into the top portion of the plant with all the traits of the parent species. The roots and base of the plant are formed by the rootstock. The vascular cambium, where the wounds of the scion and rootstock are bound together to heal, is where the union occurs.

Rootstock Cactus for Grafting

How to Graft Cactus
When making cuts, use only sterile, extremely clean equipment. Make a scion from healthy plants you’ve chosen. Trim the stem to a minimum of 1 inch (2.5 cm) from the top. Beheading a cactus to a few inches (7.5 cm) of the earth will then prepare the rootstock.
Place the scion such that both vascular cambium are next to the cut section of the still-rooted rootstock. Rubber bands can be used to keep the components together.
Care for grafted and ungrafted cacti is the same. Keep an eye out for any rot or insects at the union. The union should be sealed by the time the rubber bands are removed, which should take about two months.

- Slice off the Pereskiopsis’ top; you’ll typically reach the ideal diameter by cutting the plant’s top off at a length of about 1.5 cm (1/2 inch). - Choose your preferred seedling and check that it is clean. Additionally, picking your seedling is crucial. I primarily took the little, two to four-week-old newborns. It can be younger or older. The size is the most critical factor. It must remain on the stock and not cross or leave the ring. If you’re doubtful, you should measure it to ensure that your stock’s diameter is more than that of your seedling (see picture below).
- I often clean the seedling with water, lay it on a smooth surface, and slice it easily at the middle or bottom. If the seedling doesn’t attach to the cutter, it doesn’t matter; you can remove it with your fingers instead.
Transfer the seedling to the Pereskiopsis plant using a match, pincette (tweezers), or anything similar. Push the seedling gently from the top when it is slightly off-center on the stock to get rid of any potential air bubbles.
After grafting the seedling to the stock, the new joint should be placed as soon as possible in a humid environment. Spray some water on it after waiting five minutes. When you spray, try to avoid the seedling. For the typical fat-stock grafts, this is not necessary, but on Pereskiopsis, skipping this step ensures failure. The Pereskiopsis will shrink and reject the scion in dry air. I use a small greenhouse and regularly spray water within a vat of water to increase humidity (see picture below).
For about 7 days, the grafts must be kept in humidity. Though I have never experienced a fungus attack, this could cause worries.
Additionally, the Pereskiopsis top remnants that were cut off for the garft can be re-rooted. You will have new stock in a few weeks if you let it dry for a few hours and repot it in moist soil.
Place them outside (if you have enough sunlight or tropical weather as we do in Thailand) or under your growing lights after removing them from the chamber.
Depending on the species you grafted, it should start growing soon if the graft was successful. It may take a week before you see anything for some species. Some may require two to three weeks. The light green head and the separation’s heals are typically visible. the seedling will gradually expand.
Important: The pereskiopsis will frequently begin to send out new branches as you wait for the scion to begin growing. It is crucial that you cut these off (ideally with a sharp cutter or something similar, taking care not to damage the leaves), as otherwise the stock will focus its energy on expanding the new branches rather than strengthening the scion.
*CAUTION: I suggest that you immediately cut the tiny spine off of your palms or fingers. If it penetrates deeper into your skin, it may cause severe agony for a few days.
