One of Joshua Tree National Park’s unique features is the Cholla Cactus Garden. This modest quarter-mile circle offers access to a dense cluster of cholla cactus that are situated where the upper Mojave Desert and the lower Colorado Desert meet.
The cholla is known as the teddy bear cactus and is arguably the nicest cactus on the earth, but this is one teddy bear you do not want to hug! The cactus is covered in spines that, with just a gentle touch, will cling onto your skin. This protective system helps people survive in the desert, but it can be uncomfortable for those who stray from the track.

The trailhead is located near the main draw on Pinto Basin Road on the route to Cottonwood Springs, which is the Cholla Cactus Garden (and the trailhead to Lost Palms Oasis). Take Pinto Basin Road for 12 kilometers starting from Park Boulevard. On the south side of the street sits the Cactus Garden.
Where is Joshua Tree’s Cholla Cactus Garden?
The Cholla Cactus Garden is situated close to the area where the Colorado and Mohave Deserts meet along the Pinto Basin Road. With greater water available to the cholla in this area, a large number of cacti can survive there. A quarter-mile trail leads through the Cholla Cactus Garden so visitors can explore the area.
Be careful when around these cactus, sometimes known as “jumping” chollas since their segments can split off and adhere to people and animals in order to reproduce.
How far is the trail to the Cholla Cactus Garden?
In the vicinity of Twentynine Palms, California, try this 0.2-mile loop track. It usually takes 5 minutes to finish and is regarded as being simple. Since birding, hiking, and strolling are all highly popular activities here, you can run into other people while exploring. The route is lovely to explore at any time of the year and is open all year. Dogs must stay at home because they are not permitted on this trail.
The cholla cactus is where?
In the deserts of North America, cholla cactus comprise more than 20 different species of the Opuntia genus (Cactacea family). The term “cholla” is used to describe a variety of shrubby cacti belonging to this genus that have cylindrical stems made of segmented joints. These “stems” are actually modified branches that have multiple purposes, including flower production, water storage, and photosynthesis.
Chollas, like the majority of cacti, feature tubercles, which are tiny, wart-like protrusions on the stems from which sharp spines, which are actually modified leaves, sprout. The only cacti that have papery sheaths protecting their spines are chollas. These sheaths, which are frequently vivid and multicolored, give the cactus its characteristic appearance.
Even though prickly pears belong to the Opuntia genus, their branches look more like pads than cylindrical joints. Glochids, or clusters of thin, small, barbed spines, are what distinguish opuntia from other plants. Glochids, which are yellow or red in color and easily detach from the pads or stems, are located directly above the group of ordinary spines. Once embedded in the skin, glochids are frequently difficult to see and even more challenging to remove.
Range & Habitat
All of the scorching deserts of the American Southwest are home to cholla cacti, with several varieties adapting to various climates and altitude ranges. Most prefer dry, rocky flats or slopes with coarse, well-drained soil. While some have adapted to alpine forests, others demand steep, rocky foothills.
Description
Even within the same species, cholla cactus blossoms typically range in hue from orange to greenish-yellow. Depending on the local climate, the majority of plants bloom from April to June. The abundance of spines and glochids, as well as the width, length, form, and color of stems and joints, all vary. Chollas can range in height from less than a foot (Club or Devil Cholla) to as much as 15 feet, appearing as ground creepers, shrubs, or trees (Chain-Fruit Cholla).
ANSWER:
Despite not being native to Travis County, Cylindropuntia imbricata (Tree cholla) is native to Texas, as seen on this USDA Plant Profile map. However, there is no reason why it shouldn’t thrive if you are ready to give the right atmosphere. This page features many images from Southwest Colorado Wildflowers, but there is no mention of fungus, so let’s go a little farther.

The Arizona Cooperative Extension Pests of Agave, Aloe, Cactus, and Yucca website is the last webpage to mention fungus. To locate “Fungal infections of leaves and pads,” scroll down to Page 6. The Cactus Longhorn Beetle was described in the section on insects on page 7 as follows:
“Prickly pear and cholla cacti (Cylindropuntia species), barrel cacti (Echinocactus and Ferocactus species), immature saguaro cacti (Carnegiea gigantea), and other species of cacti are all targeted by this beetle. The adult beetle measures between 1 and 11/4 inches (2.5 and 3 cm) in length and is shiny black with noticeable white patterns on the antennae. The adult beetle’s antennae are frequently longer than the body as a whole. Feeding on the edges of prickly pear pads or the terminal buds of other cacti causes damage to the plants (Fig. 18).
When the adults lay their eggs, the eggs hatch, and the larvae burrow into the stems of cholla cactus, the beetle attacks them. Waste (frass) is forced out of the entry holes and deposits itself on the canes as a crusty black layer. Larvae may eat their way into plant roots, causing the plants to wilt and die.
By manually removing the pests from infected plants, the cactus longhorn beetle can be controlled. Early in the morning or late at night, particularly after warm summer rains, is when the beetles are most active and easiest to find and eliminate. Because the spines act as a natural defense, very spiny species are less likely to suffer injury from the beetle. Given that hand picking is successful and that populations are often not high, chemical control is not advised.”

We discovered Bacterial Necrosis of Saguaro Cactus from the Arizona Department of Agriculture. According to this source, cholla cacti have also been observed to have the same disease. It provides guidance on how to treat and remove the rot. Again, you will have to decide which therapy, if any, you choose to employ because we are not plant pathologists and cannot see the cactus.
Are cholla cacti really able to jump?
The majority of the cactus in the Sonoran Desert are stunning to look at, but one variety can be dangerous to people if they come into contact with it.
It is the chain fruit cholla, sometimes referred to as the jumping cholla due its “jumping onto the skin or clothing of a bystander from a parent plant or the ground.
Of course, the barbed cactus spines don’t actually jump. But when individuals come too close, they quickly separate from the main plant and hook tenaciously, sometimes painfully.

The heart rock in Joshua Tree is where?
We tried to get instructions to Heart Rock before visiting Joshua Tree National Park but had trouble pinpointing its precise location. We were aware that it was close to Joshua Tree’s well-known Arch Rock, but there was still a great deal of ground to cover in the arid, boulder-filled desert. Although the Arch Rock trail is clearly designated, there are no signs going to Heart Rock. For additional information, see our guide to the Arch Rock hike. A brief diversion from the hiking trail to Arch Rock leads to Heart Rock. The Twin Tanks/Arch Rock trailhead parking lot is the starting point for the out-and-back Arch Rock hiking trail. If you don’t get lost as we did, the Arch Rock route is around 0.5 miles long and takes about 20 minutes to complete each way. Northeast of Arch Rock, up the hill on top of a level portion of rock, is where Heart Rock may be found. You’ll spend some time at Heart Rock taking pictures and admiring the vistas, and the diversion from the Arch Rock route only takes around 15 minutes round trip. One of our favorite things to do in Joshua Tree is hike to Heart Rock.
Advice on how to get to Heart Rock: Although it is feasible to trek to Arch Rock and Heart Rock from the White Tank Campground, we do not suggest attempting to do so because it is quite challenging to find a parking space at the campground. When we arrived, the campground was not accessible by automobile. Finding a parking space in the larger approved parking lot further along the road and hiking the 1-mile round trip are considerably easier options.
Is a cactus the Joshua Tree?
Joshua trees aren’t actually trees; rather, they’re a species of plant known as a succulent that stores water. However, they are regarded as desert trees in their dry habitats. Mormon immigrants in the 19th century felt the outstretched tree limbs guided them on their westward trek, therefore they dubbed the trees Joshua trees after the biblical character Joshua. Before branching, Joshua trees typically have a single trunk and reach heights of three to nine feet (0.9 to 2.7 meters). Branches finish in clusters of spherical, white blooms and prickly foliage. Typically, the Joshua tree’s trunk has a diameter of between one and three feet (0.3 and 0.9 meters). Although they rarely reach heights of more than 40 feet, Joshua trees can reach heights of between 20 and 70 feet (6 and 21 meters) (12 meters).
Desert plants called josh trees are most frequently seen in the Mojave Desert in the southwest of the United States. Because of how beautiful these trees are in the arid environment, California even dedicated a national park after them.
Before blossoming, Joshua trees must endure a cold-weather dormant phase, but after flowering, they are dependent on one little insect for pollination. In order for seeds to develop, Yucca moths (genus Tegeticula) move pollen from one blossom to another before laying their eggs inside the flower. Some of the seeds are consumed by the larvae when they hatch, while the remainder can spread out and develop into new Joshua trees. A mutualistic symbiotic relationship is a sort of contact in which two species are reliant on one another for mutual benefit. Joshua trees are useful to a variety of other animals. In Joshua trees, for instance, nest 25 different bird species. Several mammals rely on Joshua trees for food, and lizards and other invertebrates hide in various tree portions. The trees have been used by humans to manufacture shoes, baskets, and food.
Joshua trees grow slowly, but they live a long period as a result. Since Joshua trees don’t have annual growth rings like real trees do, it might be challenging to estimate their age. Instead, they divide the Joshua tree’s height in height by the estimated annual growth rate. It’s estimated that one Joshua tree in California is more than 1,000 years old. The average lifetime is 150 years.
Joshua trees are susceptible to climate change since they need a cold time to flower. The Joshua tree is now being examined by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service for possible Endangered Species Act listing.
It’s possible that the initial dispersers of Joshua tree seeds were the giant ground sloths that went extinct at the end of the Ice Age. Today, the wind and small creatures spread the seeds.
Where is the jumping cholla to be found?
The jumping cholla, also called the hanging chain cholla or Cylindropuntia fulgida, is a chollacactus that is indigenous to Sonora and the Southwest of the United States.
The entire state of Sonora, with the exception of the Sierra Madre Occidental cordillera in the east and northern California, which includes the significant islands of Tiburon and Isla ngel de la Guarda, is where the leaping cholla may be found in its maximum range.

The range stretches into Arizona and California’s Colorado Desert in the southwest of the country. It can be found in a few specific locations in Arizona’s northwest-central Sonoran Desert, south and southwest of the Arizona transition zone of the Mogollon Rim. Additionally, it extends into the very southern region of the Great Basin Desert in southern Utah as well as the northeastern portion of the Mojave Desert in southern Nevada and Utah. Additionally, it can be found in some areas of the Eastern Plains of Colorado, east of the Colorado River in the Yuma Desert, and just south of the Bill Williams River’s east-west segment. Are cholla cacti toxic?

Does Wyoming have cholla cactus?
This is another tiny ball cactus, but you can tell it from from the other two because its spines are born on ridges (known as ribs) rather than tubercles. Additionally, flower buds grow down on the plant rather than at the top (Yellow arrow pointing to rib with a flower bud). The green-flowered hedgehog cactus can be found from Texas and New Mexico to South Dakota and Wyoming in the western Great Plains and Rocky Mountains.
The Laramie Range, less than 20 miles east of Laramie (specimen here), and Virginia Dale, Colorado, a former stage stop, both lie within 30 miles of Sheep Mountain, respectively, and are the closest (to Sheep Mountain) reported distributions of this species. On Sheep Mountain, I have never observed Echinocereus viridiflorus, although I believe it might be there on the lower slopes. I would love to hear from you if you see it.
The plant produces an inch-wide, greenish-yellow flower in late May or early June (thus the species name viridiflorus, which means green-flowered). Observe how challenging it is to see the plant’s top, which is located to the left of the flower. These ball cacti are frequently well-camouflaged when not in bloom.

Wyoming’s grasslands are home to many plains prickly pear cacti. Although much less common than on the prairie, it is nevertheless rather simple to discover on Sheep Mountain. Opuntia polyacantha has one of the broadest geographic ranges of any North American cactus, extending from Texas all the way up to Saskatchewan in the north and from British Columbia all the way down to Southern California in the west. This particular type of prickly pear exhibits great regional variation in appearance, like many other widely distributed prickly pears.
In our region, the Opuntia polyacantha flowers from late June to early July. The gorgeous blossoms are often a shade of yellow and measure between 2 and 3 inches in diameter.
Sheep Mountain does not have any of the three Wyoming cacti species, which comprise two prickly pears (Opuntia fragilis and Opuntia macrorhiza) and one ball cactus (Escobaria missouriensis). Opuntia macrorhiza is found in the Great Plains and the Black Hills in eastern Wyoming, whereas Opuntia fragilis is found in Sweetwater County. Escobaria missouriensis is also found in the Great Plains and the Black Hills, as well as in Park County (1). Opuntia erinaceae, an eighth species of cactus, is included in Dorn and Dorn (1), despite the fact that I just informed you that there are only seven kinds of cactus in Wyoming. Be not afraid; Opuntia erinaceae has not disappeared from Wyoming since the Vascular Plants of Wyoming was published.
