How To Carve A Watermelon Cactus

  • Place the watermelon on its side on a cutting board and chop off 1/4 to 1/2 of the stem end to create a solid base. Keep the tip aside to create a little cactus.
  • On the base, place the watermelon upright. Draw a simple outline of your preferred cactus shape with a dry erase marker.
  • Draw a straight line around the back of the watermelon about 1/3 of the way from the bottom, being careful not to go through the outline of the cactus. This will serve as your serving dish for the watermelon salsa.
  • Cut all the way around your outline with the kitchen knife, leaving only the bowl and the cactus attached. To create a bowl, scoop out the bottom.
  • Use cookie cutters to cut out cactus and flower shapes from the watermelon pieces that were removed during the carving process, and then chop up the leftover fruit to make your favorite watermelon salsa, margarita, or juice to serve.
  • To make the cactus look like it has flowers, add toothpicks here and there to create thorns, then add watermelon flowers for decoration. Make a short, spherical cactus out of the remnant of bottom rind by decorating it with toothpicks.

How long will a watermelon be good for?

Cut watermelon will keep in the refrigerator for three to five days. Make sure it is well-wrapped to prevent drying. Watermelon should only be frozen if there is a use for it once frozen, such as a smoothie or water infusion. The process of freezing and thawing the fruit ruins its texture.

How is cut watermelon kept fresh?

Melon carvings frequently remain attractive for around a week. First day is when they look their best. After a week, they can still look decently fine if they are preserved carefully. A few variables will determine how well your melon carvings turn out after a week.

You must preserve them properly for them to keep their new appearance. Melon carvings typically become a little drier over time. After you finish chopping your melon, give it a quick rinse or spray with cold water to help prevent drying out. After that, wrap in wet paper towels and put in an airtight bag before putting in the fridge.

Different melon carvings hold up longer than others. Your melon carving won’t likely turn out so well after the first couple of days if you start with a really ripe or somewhat mushy melon. Starting with a melons that isn’t quite ripe is preferable.

The cleaner your carving work, the better your melon carvings will look as they age.

The cuts you made become more obvious when the carved melon dries out. For example, if you carve the inner surface of a leaf and cut through the middle, it won’t be evident when the melon is fresh and juicy, but as the melon starts to lose some of its liquid, the separated portions pull apart and become more obvious. Similarly, if you make more slices in the first circle, they might not be visible when the melon is still fresh but will be when it has dried out a little. In essence, once your melon carving is older than a day, some of your flaws will become more obvious.

Even after a week, melon carvings can still be beautiful. Here is a picture of the 8-day-old melons I had carved. Still attractive.

In my forthcoming Carving of the Month Club, I’ll show you how to cut these jagged-edged flowers with honeydew if you want to learn how to slice a melon like this. The Carving of the Month Club will continue the Thai style melon carving lessons that I started in my Vegetable and Fruit Carving 101 Course for Beginners. Additional melon carvings that might be taught in the Carving of the Month Club are displayed below. Choose your favorites to win. The most popular melon patterns will be introduced initially.

I occasionally forget to remove melon carvings from my backup refrigerator in the garage. This one was 4 weeks old when I took it out. Unwrapping it astonished me because it actually still had a decent appearance. The cut fruit, despite being 28 days old, still looked very good despite the foul odor and the beginnings of some form of mold on one side of the rind.

I’m not proposing that you serve or show a rotten 28-day-old melon, but I did find it amazing that it still had some aesthetic appeal.

How are prickly pear cactus cut?

Put on your cooking gloves first! Believe me! The fruit features numerous, nearly undetectable thorns, however they don’t always feel sharp. They will also hurt and be quite difficult to escape from.

Peel the cactus pear’s skin off with care. It should come off in one piece, and if some interior flesh is removed, that’s fine.

There are a ton of small edible seeds inside the fruit. Many people enjoy the seeds, and the slices are frequently added to salads or eaten on their own.

Personally, I find the texture of the seeds to be too gritty and would rather juice them.

What is the ideal watermelon carving technique?

Here are two techniques for cutting a watermelon:

  • Rindless for use in salads, fruit bowls, or dishes.
  • Picnic-style, with the rind for serving cut on a dish.

Watermelon without the rind

On one of the cut sides, support the watermelon. Slice the skin off the watermelon gently by starting at the top and cutting along the contour. You will make a cut that is about half an inch deep.

As you continue to peel the watermelon, remove parts of the rind that are two to three inches broad and follow the inner, white peel color. Be certain to make the cut deep enough to expose only the skin.

Watermelon should be cut in half vertically. Next, divide each half one more to create four manageable quarters.

Cut into little squares or leave in huge triangles. These cubes are ideal for a watermelon and feta salad or a fruit bowl!

Watermelon with the rind on

On one of the cut sides, support the watermelon. Cut the watermelon in half using a sharp knife, beginning in the center of the fruit. Set aside one half.

Slice the watermelon again in half while the first half is still standing to get a quarter of it.

Set one quarter aside and place the other on the cutting board with the cut side up.

Slice the watermelon lengthwise beginning at one end with a sharp knife. Until you reach the other end, cut each slice into quarter- to half-inch-thick pieces.

How should a nice watermelon be cut?

There are many various watermelon cutout shapes that we can create. Because we may choose the interior design from extremely simple to more intricate, cutting watermelons is the perfect approach to prepare them for a themed party. As an example, just a plain round shape with a polka dot theme. Use cookie cutters as a fun guide for several other themes. The secret is to use a pattern that is very basic and has few details. For instance, it only took a few minutes longer for me to cut a watermelon into wedges than it did for us to cut it into a butterfly shape. My family was waiting to eat this watermelon, so I moved the plate outdoors and took the picture with a grass background as I didn’t really have time to shoot pictures. Really a terrific method for cutting watermelons for a picnic or outdoor gathering!

Technique

Watermelon should be cut in half.

I demonstrated the procedure using a seeded watermelon, however seedless watermelon is preferable. On the photographs, you can see the difference. Presentation is much more beautiful with Seddless.

2. Cut the top off.

3. I set the design—a heart-shaped bowl—on top of the watermelon. On the top and bottom of the heart, insert 2 skewers. I can then turn the watermelon upside down and see where to put my heart.

4. Flip the watermelon over. Cut around the bowl of the heart and insert it between the skewers. Maintaining the knife as straight as you can.

5. Cut the heart of the watermelon into wedges.

6. To make the watermelon heart easier for visitors to consume, cut it into a few pieces horizontally.

As you can see in the photo below, this method of seedless watermelon cutting makes for much better presentation.

Can I prepare the watermelon the previous evening?

How ripe your watermelon is on the day you bring it home from the store will unquestionably affect how long it will last in storage. However, it is generally advised to keep an uncut watermelon in a cool, dark spot for up to three days. Alternatively, if you cut the watermelon in half, cover it completely with plastic wrap, and store it in the fridge for up to 3 days. Or, if you decide to cut the watermelon into cubes or balls, store it in the fridge for up to 3 days in a tight container.

How long may uncut watermelon be left outside in the sun?

Keep watermelon between 50 and 59 degrees Fahrenheit; 55 degrees is optimal. Do not break the cold chain and store watermelon in refrigeration if it is received chilled. Watermelon can be stored at room temperature for 7–10 days. Watermelons lose color, flavor, and get pitted after two days at 32F. The rind degrades and becomes mealy and mushy when frozen. A melon should be wrapped and stored between 9 and 36F after it has been cut.

The NWPB investigated the after-cut watermelon shelf life as part of the Cutting & Yield Research. The 36-count watermelon had a 7-day shelf life and was still edible on day 7. The microbiological analysis and 45- and 60-count watermelon sampling revealed that the fruit had a 4-day shelf life and was still edible at day 4. Researchers from Oregon State University’s Food Innovation Center recommended additional shelf life research since the 36-count was received refrigerated while the 45- and 60-count were received at ambient temperatures, which may account for the variation in shelf life. Researchers also emphasized the importance of teaching foodservice personnel to wash the watermelon’s outside before cutting it.

How are fruit carvings preserved?

Please follow these instructions to choose and prepare your fruit and veggies for carving:

  • Make sure the fruit and vegetables you choose are smooth-skinned, fresh, and not overripe. Fruit that is too ripe will be challenging to handle and slice. Additionally, choose fruits and veggies that are colorful and that you believe would look fantastic when carved.
  • Fruit and vegetables should be washed, dried, and refrigerated to maintain their freshness and ease of carving.
  • Make sure the knife is made of stainless steel and is razor-sharp.
  • Fruits and vegetables should be handled delicately.
  • After carving is complete, rinse with ice water, wrap in plastic wrap, and put in the fridge. When stored in this way, they can last up to 3–4 days. Even after a week, some fruits can be kept.
  • Spray fruit with ice water every few hours if you plan to keep it out at room temperature for a while to keep it fresh and the colors vibrant.
  • Put any vegetables that will change color after carving in cold water with vinegar or lemon juice. Apples and potatoes, for instance, should be handled in this manner.

Once you are familiar with these straightforward suggestions, getting started should be a breeze!

How long can watermelon slices be left outside?

Keep melon slices cool. Melon chunks should not be left out at room temperature for more than two hours. They have been out for too long if you have to ponder how long they have been there.
