The majority of tropical forest cacti, also known as jungle cacti, start off as epiphytes or lithophytes, growing in a moss or debris-filled nook in the crook of a tree branch or a rock. As a result, these cacti are equipped to thrive in a medium that is prone to dryness despite the humid, tropical circumstances of their natural habitats. Although they are succulents with areoles that frequently have small bristles, tropical forest cactus seem very different from desert cacti. They are typically leafless, made up of segments that are flattened or tubular, and kept more for their beautiful flowers than for their architectural value.
Some of the tropical forest cacti are extensively sold as houseplants and have gained a lot of popularity, however they frequently go by muddled names. Schlumbergera x buckleyi, which normally blooms in December and bears purple anthers (the part of the plant that holds the pollen), has long been recognized as the authentic Christmas cactus. Schlumbergera truncata in particular has recently been cultivated in large quantities and offered as a Thanksgiving, Christmas, or holiday cactus. Given that these plants typically bloom from November to January, the moniker “holiday cactus” is appropriate. Additionally, the sharper points on their serrated leaves and their yellow anthers help to distinguish them from S. buckleyi. Many nurseries continue to use the Zygocactus genus, which has been out of use botanically since the 1950s, adding to the confusion. There are also many botanical synonyms in use for these species.
Both Hatiora gaertneri and Hatiora rosea are marketed as Easter or spring cacti and usually bloom in the spring, however they can bloom later in the year under the correct circumstances. The leaf edges of these plants have more rounded teeth. These cacti are also known by a variety of botanical names, including Rhipsalidopsis gaertneri and Epiphyllopsis rosea.
CARING FOR TROPICAL FOREST CACTI
Keep in mind that if you want to grow tropical forest cactus for their flower display, some variation in the routine of the light and temperature throughout the year is advised. Light
Imagine the filtered light and understory of a genuine cactus environment in a tropical forest. These plants will perish if exposed to lengthy, direct summer sun; they prefer a medium source of light all year. Only the morning sun is optimal, yet they may tolerate less than optimum light conditions. The plant should be rotated, but it is not necessary. Some cacti flower when exposed to sustained sunshine, so you might need to mimic brighter circumstances to get your plant to bloom. Others require a brief time of relative darkness to stimulate buds.
Water
In the spring and summer, water often to maintain the soil continuously moist without allowing water runoff to pool on the ground. As your home warms up and cools down with the seasons, you should adjust how often you water. Reduce watering during the pre-flowering stage, allowing the top 1/2 inch of soil to dry out between waterings. After flowering, water the plant just enough to keep the soil moist for three to six weeks. Avoid overwatering; if the tips of your plant start to turn yellow, you are overwatering it and risking cellular rupture.
Temperature
Warm indoor temperatures throughout the year are preferred by tropical forest cactus, while some require rest periods after flowering and while developing buds for rebloom. They don’t take a single, extended winter rest in a much cooler environment, unlike desert cactus, but they are less actively developing in different seasons of the year. Some plants need to be relocated to a location with cooler temperatures (below 65 F) for a month or two after flowering and once more before establishing buds in order to generate flowers. Soil and Potting
Cacti from tropical forests prefer rich soil with good drainage. Peat is a component that many commercial cacti and potting soil mixtures overuse, which keeps moisture in the soil for longer than is healthy for these plants. The majority of tropical forest cactus thrive on soil that is made by combining one part perlite (for drainage), one part potting soil, one part peat, and one part coarse orchid bark (for structure and nutrition). While this mixture quickly drains, you’ll find that it retains more moisture than a desert cactus mixture. When plants are planted in the incorrect combination, they may initially flourish but subsequently develop root rot because of the excess water retention in the soil.
Many kinds of tropical forest cactus benefit from annual repotting after flowering. A clean pot of the same size with new soil is usually fine because slightly congested circumstances are good for flowering. At this point, you can also prune your cactus to give it a better shape.
Nutrition
Use a fertilizer resembling tomato every two weeks starting when flower buds start to form until the flowering time is over, and then cease. On these plants or any other succulents, avoid using fertilizers with a high nitrogen content.
A Summer Holiday?
When planted outside during the summer, tropical forest cactus benefit from the air circulation; nevertheless, keep them in the light shade. With this external exposure, the stems will harden, increasing your chances of a robust flower display.
Encouraging Your Holiday or Easter Cactus to Flower
The most popular jungle cacti houseplants are Holiday and Easter cacti, which are typically bought for their stunning flower displays. Despite being simple and tolerant plants, there are some care guidelines that increase the likelihood of strong flower production.
After blooming, these plants thrive when given a month or two of rest. In order to set new buds, they also require cooler temperatures and longer nights. One of these components has most likely been overlooked in your tropical forest cactus’ yearly routine if it refuses to bloom again. In instance, if kept at regular household temperatures over 68 F throughout the bud production period, your holiday or Easter cactus won’t set buds. The presence of artificial light at night also prevents buds from forming and flowers from blooming, thus domestic lamps and even streetlights might be an issue.
For instance, a Christmas cactus often blooms from late November through early January. Keep the temperature above 60°F and water routinely during the flowering period. After flowering, your cactus needs to rest for around two months. The cactus should be watered less frequently and maintained at a moderate temperature throughout this period (around 55F). You can raise the temperature and start your feeding schedule again around April. Keep your plant dryish and chilly again until buds emerge, two months before bloom-time (mid-September), at which point you can resume regular watering.
Normally, an Easter cactus blooms from April until May. After the blossoming is over, give it a month of repose with less water, no fertilizer, and cooler temps (around 55F). Resuming a typical household temperature and watering regimen for the growing season in June. Starting in January, the pre-bloom chilly period will last for at least twelve weeks, depending on the Easter cactus. Until buds form, keep your plant cold and dryish; after they do, you can begin regular watering and maintenance.
Propagation
Cut off a part of a stem with two or more segments at a connecting point in order to produce tropical forest cactus with segmented stems. Put the cut end of the cactus gently into a pot of pre-mixed soil using the standard tropical forest cactus potting mixture that was previously described. Multiple cuttings can be started in a single pot and cared for like adult plants. With this kind of plant, wounds don’t need to harden. The same method can be used to produce other tropical forest cacti with branching or columnar stems, but you must give the cuttings 24 hours to harden before planting them on. Take the entire stem or a section of it that is at least four inches long for these plants.
Can you find cacti in the forest?
There are about 1700 species of cactus, the majority of which are indigenous to the Americas. Different conditions support the growth of various species. Here are a few of the climate zones where cactus can be found.
The Desert
Some cacti can be found in regions prone to drought, including Mexico, Texas, sections of South America, the southwest of the United States, and the Atacama Desert in Chile, the driest spot on Earth.
Deserts are where the majority of cacti species thrive. Their ability to adapt to their surroundings is what allows them to live. They make the most of the rain by storing as much water as they can. Since their roots are on the surface, they can swiftly gather water and store it in their stems.
Approximately 90% of the water that the cactus stores is in the plant. For instance, when it rains heavily, the Saguaro stores between 750 and 1000 gallons.
How does water not evaporate considering the hot nature of the desert?
Because their leaves have sunken holes and a waxy stem to prevent evaporation, cactus may continue photosynthesis during the hot season unlike other plants that lose their leaves.
In order to release some moisture, the pores frequently open at night and seal throughout the day.
They are shielded by their spines from predatory creatures. However, animals with papillae, like camels, can consume cactus with little discomfort because the spines don’t stop them from doing so.
Prickly pears, barrel cacti, and cholla are a few of the prominent species that can be found in desert regions like California.
Rainforests
Some species of cactus can be found in tropical rainforests in places like central America, the Caribbean Islands, northern South America, southeastern Brazil, and Bolivia.
Contrary to popular belief, cacti can be found in areas other than deserts. There are several that are known as jungle cactus and grow in tropical jungles. Jungle cacti lack spines, in contrast to their predominantly thorny desert counterparts.
The majority of cacti are found in cloud forests at elevations of 1,000 to 2,000 meters.
The Thanksgiving, Easter, and Christmas cacti are among the well-liked species. Most of these cacti are epiphytic or lithophytic (grow on rocks) (grow in trees). The air, dead leaves, or debris in crevices and crotches are where these succulents obtain the majority of their nutrients.
The cacti that grow inside of trees do so for support rather than to draw nutrients from the plants. Their elongated leaves’ main function is to absorb light.
It’s crucial to replicate soil that is similar to such natural conditions while attempting to cultivate jungle cacti. To do this, you’ll need a suitable potting mixture that includes, among other things, potting soil, pumice, oak leaf mold, and orchid bark.

Mountains
Cacti can be found in the highlands, despite how impossible it may seem. They do, however, flourish in low-latitude mountains. Whipple Mountains are home to such cactus.
As a result of ‘grabbing’ water in the air and facing the wind in this situation, the mountains will tend to break up the humid winds and have a side that rains.
Since the air that travels to the other side of the mountain returns compressed, hot, and dry, there is rarely any rain on that side of the mountain, which is known as the rain shadow. As they thrive in an arid climate, cacti frequently flourish in this mountainous region.

Where do cactus typically grow?

The rainforest contains cacti, right?

Therefore, it is difficult to think that “jungle cacti” may flourish in a jungle that is damp and lush, which is nearly the exact opposite of a desert.
Describe the jungle cacti. A group of cactus called “jungle cacti” are found in tropical rainforests. These plants don’t resemble one another, and many of them lack spines, unlike their desert relatives.
Many jungle cactus species are epiphytes, which means they grow on tree branches like our local bird’s nest ferns. Other species grow in cracks between rocks.
They have adapted to growing in an aerated growing environment and in cultivation, they demand aerated and well-draining conditions. Therefore, huge bits of coconut husk would be used as a common potting medium. Plants are fed with pellets of slow-release fertilizer for fertilization.
Due to their inability to resist drought, jungle cactus require constant moisture at the roots. Depending on the growing environment, once a day of watering is typically plenty for these plants. If the weather is really hot and dry, more regular watering may be necessary. Plants that are too dry will display symptoms like wilted stalks.
There are certain varieties of jungle cacti that can be cultivated in full daylight, but most like to be exposed to filtered sunlight for at least six hours per day. They will thrive if you plant them on the balcony or in the hallway and expose them to morning sunshine, but you should keep them out of the hot afternoon sun.
Describe the species The Thanksgiving and Christmas cactus, which are jungle cacti that belong to the genus Schlumbergera, are probably familiar to readers of houseplant literature. These plants, which have vivid red or pink blossoms, are imported throughout the holiday season.
The Queen of the Night, another jungle cactus that blooms with enormous white flowers at night, is a favorite among Chinese families in Singapore. Here, epiphyllum oxypetalum and epiphyllum strictum are the two species that are frequently grown.

The rapsalis teres This epiphytic cactus has thin, green, cylindrical branches that flow downward and resembles the mistletoe plant. It blooms in tiny white flowers, which are followed by lovely white berries that ornament the stalks in dark green. This plant enjoys humid, partially shaded surroundings.
Micrantha’s ripsalis Rhipsalis micrantha is an epiphytic cactus with a pendulous growth habit that produces long, green stems that can be either flattened or triangular in shape. Additionally, it favors humid, partially-shaded environments. Small white flowers are produced by the plant, which are followed by white berries with a crimson apex.
False hipposalis ramulosa The pendulous stems of this plant, also known as the Red Rhipsalis, are flattened on both sides and develop a brilliant red coloration when growing in direct sunshine. Another auspicious festive plant that was marketed to celebrate the Lunar New Year is this one. Epiphyllum phyllanthus, a mutant variety, is known as “mini dragon fruit” because of the tiny, oval, pink fruits that it produces. These fruits superficially resemble the much larger fruit, which is also produced by a cactus species. Many of the twisted and coiled stems on this plant are stunning.
Phyllostachys pumila Due to its much smaller size and resemblance in appearance to the more popularly grown Epiphyllum oxypetalum or Epiphyllum strictum, this species of Epiphyllum is occasionally mistaken for the miniature counterpart of those plants. Due to its free-flowering and space-saving qualities, it has becoming more and more well-liked as a houseplant in Singapore.
