According to the museum, saguaros receive the majority of their moisture during the rainy season and can weigh anywhere from 3200 to 4800 pounds when completely hydrated. The cacti’s roots shrivel up when there is not enough water, which causes the plant to fall over and die.
Saguaro cactus may live with monthly irrigation. The Glendale Fire Department advises calling 911 and not attempting to relocate the saguaro if it does, on the infrequent occasion, land on your home.
Why do saguaro cacti die?

- Only in the Sonoran Desert can you find the saguaro cactus.
- Saguaro cacti develop very slowly. An adult saguaro can grow to a height of 60 feet, yet a juvenile cactus may only grow 1 to 1.5 inches in its first eight years. Their growth is influenced by the water supply.
- High-elevation saguaros typically cluster on warm, south-facing hillsides. Saguaro cacti cannot withstand freezing temperatures or frost, thus they are rarely found above 4,000 feet.
- The pleats on saguaros enable them to expand as they consume water (like an accordion) and to contract when they run out of water. The number of pleats on the saguaro’s exterior matches the number of woody ribs inside the plant.
- When saguaros are completely hydrated, they become incredibly heavy. Saguaros that are adults can weigh up to 4 tons.
- A saguaro begins to bloom around the age of 35 and develops its first arm around the age of 50. A saguaro is typically regarded as an adult at 125 years old. The saguaro has a 150–200 year lifespan.
- Saguaro cacti cells can occasionally mutate to generate fan-shaped crests in tangled patterns, though this is quite uncommon. Crests typically appear at the very top of the main stem.
What is the average lifespan of a saguaro cactus?
Saguaros are a cactus that grows very slowly. In the first eight years of its life, a saguaro grows between 1 and 1.5 inches in Saguaro National Park, according to studies.
As they develop under the cover of a “nurse tree,” most frequently a palo verde, ironwood, or mesquite tree, these tiny, newborn saguaros are quite difficult to find. The much older nurse tree of the saguaro could perish as it grows more. Some scientists think that because the saguaro is competing with the nursing tree, it may cause it to die by stealing water and nutrients from the nearby soil.
Growth rates change with age, based on the environment, amount of precipitation, and location. We do know that a saguaro cactus grows most rapidly during the transition from an unbranched to a branching mature stage.
Typically, branches start to emerge on saguaros in Saguaro National Park between the ages of 50 and 70. Arms might not form for up to 100 years in locations with less precipitation.
A saguaro starts to produce flowers when it is 35 years old. Flowers can be found anywhere along the sides of the plant, though they are typically located near the end of the main trunk and arms. A saguaro will continue to produce flowers for its entire lifespan.
Typically, a saguaro is thought to be roughly 125 years old as an adult. It might be up to 50 feet tall and weigh 6 tons or more. A saguaro’s lifespan is most likely 150 to 175 years on average. However, according to biologists, certain plants could live for over 200 years.
What does a saguaro look like as it ages?

Fortunately, there aren’t many different illnesses to be on the lookout for. Saguaro necrosis is the only one that most cactus owners will ever become aware of. Insects and polluted soil are the main vectors for the propagation of this disease, which is brought on by Erwinia cacticida bacteria in a saguaro.
Smaller, lighter-colored patches appear first as a symptom of infection. They can occur anywhere on the trunk or branches, and their edges frequently appear damp. These areas will eventually turn black, crack open, and might exude a foul-smelling, dark fluid.
The germs will spread throughout the rest of the cactus if neglected. Until you have significant exposed sections of the internal woody “skeleton,” it will keep eating away at the healthy tissue. These vulnerable areas could make your saguaro sag and eventually fall over.
Prevention and Treatment of Saguaro Necrosis
The majority of bacterial necrosis infections in saguaro trees are caused by exterior tissue lesions. It’s more likely to remain healthy if you treat these right away. Avoiding planting a new saguaro where one has already been infected is the other key prophylactic measure.
Use a clean, sharp knife to excise necrotic lesions that are smaller than 2 across before treating the tissue damage. Spots greater than 2 frequently indicate that the illness has spread past the point at which it may be treated. As a result, it’s crucial to routinely check your cactus for damage.
Alternate Reasons for an Unhealthy Saguaro
What happens if your saguaro is ill but doesn’t exhibit the classic signs of necrosis? Besides sickness, the following factors can also contribute to a sick saguaro:
- overwatering
- extreme cold
- difficult weather conditions
- growing at a temperature or elevation outside of its typical range
One of the strongest early indicators that your saguaro is ill is a drastic shift in color. Your cactus may have root rot if it turns from a subdued blue/green/gray tint to yellow and is also floppy or withered. Only water your saguaro when the surrounding soil has totally dried up to prevent this.

As we seek relief from a hot afternoon in the shade outside park headquarters, Stonum claims that it has the capacity to immediately outcompete any native Sonoran Desert plants.

I glance around and shiver as I picture all these amazing desert plants being replaced by a meadow.
Conservation experts at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum are hard at work coming up with plans to address the buffelgrass issue in the Tucson Basin across town, just outside the western section of the park. Even one of them, Kim Franklin, published her dissertation for the University of Arizona on the subject.
She tells me that buffelgrass also competes with saguaros for available area. Fire is also brought.
Why is the browning of my saguaro cactus?
A cactus’ ability to decay from the top down can be affected by a number of factors. Fungus, disease, or water entering an open wound on the plant are the three main causes of cactus rot.
A cactus is susceptible to contracting disease or fungus spores if it sustains any kind of harm. Water frequently seeps into the wound as well, causing the plant to rot from the inside out.

Can saguaros withstand fire?

But regardless of what the fire directly scorches, according to scientists, it almost always has a negative effect.
“A desert has not undergone the same process of fire-driven evolution as Mt. Lemmon. Unfortunately, many of those saguaros are doomed. Adam Farrell-Wortman, Tucson Botanical Gardens’ horticulture manager, predicts that replanting will be necessary.
According to Farrell-Wortman, the plant’s spines serve as leaves to protect it from the sun.
Height or size of the cactus species
Every form of cacti has its own rate of growth, and there have been more than 300 genera and 3000 species identified.
To determine how much growth the species produces annually, we would need to study it for a number of years.
For instance, compared to barrel varieties, columnar types like the saguaro cactus grow taller. Older Golden Barrel cacti (Echinocactus platyacanthus) can reach heights of 8.2 feet (2.5 meters) and 5 feet (1.5 meters), respectively.
A Saguaro cactus (Carnegiea gigiantea) of a comparable age (about 100 years) can grow to a height of 15 to 16 feet (4.6 meters). The oldest Saguaro cactus ever measured, according to the National Park Service, rises more than 78 feet (24 meters) into the air.
The cactus can grow up to 8 inches (20 cm) per year, depending on its height and the growing environment (Drezner, 2003).
Regrettably, little research has been done on the age-size relationships of other cactus species. Since the Saguaro bloom is the state flower of Arizona and the cactus is protected, the Saguaro cactus is the subject of the majority of studies. The fact that the species is among the oldest and largest ever discovered on earth has also attracted a lot of attention.
Precipitation received
In addition to species, another element that affects cactus size is the amount of precipitation that cacti receive in their environment.
For instance, Pachycereus pringlei, which inhabits the western Sonoran coast and the Sonaran Desert’s driest regions like Baja California and receives little more than 3 inches of precipitation annually, develops exceedingly slowly.
In contrast, cacti from more humid habitats, such Opuntias or prickly pears from non-desert regions of South America, grow swiftly and have the potential to outgrow their surroundings.
Number of areoles
The quantity of areoles (plural: areola) also serves as a proxy for the age of the cactus.
A cluster of thorns (cactus-adapted leaves), blooms, and even a new branch or “arm” may sprout in an areola.
Less than a year old thorns are often reddish in color. The population increases column by column, with younger people at the top than the bottom.
Number of arms
The quantity of thorny “arms” sprouting off the main stem of columnar cacti can also serve as a proxy for the cactus’ age.
A Saguaro, for instance, must be at least 70 years old before it starts to sprout arms. It takes a saguaro at least 100 years to have one arm that is completely grown. It is most likely older than 150 years if there are multiple arms and blossoms.
However, other cactus species, like the Golden Barrel cacti, do not have branches.
