It’s been a hot summer, and it’s still young. What can you do to ensure the survival of garden plants?
On the hottest bright days, you can relocate containers into a tree or porch’s shade. Water, however, is the primary protection that plants have against extreme temperatures. They stay cool by letting the water on their leaves evaporate.
Water evaporates more quickly as the temperature rises, making the plant as a whole thirstier. Making ensuring there is adequate water in the soil to power plants’ air conditioning is therefore crucial. (Drizzling water on the leaves serves no purpose.)
Track the amount of soil moisture in each area of your garden during hot weather (sunnier parts will dry out faster). If you stick your finger down two inches, is it damp? As necessary, give garden beds a lengthy, thorough bath. Given that rainfall and soil moisture levels in northeast Illinois are roughly normal this year, it might not even be necessary.

Other plants, like those that are indigenous to tropical rain forests, can withstand oppressive heat and humidity. However, many of our temperate zone plants are susceptible to scorching or wilting.
Situations also matter. Temperatures significantly greater than what the thermometer indicates may be experienced by plants close to a concrete driveway that absorbs and radiates heat (as can plants in containers on a concrete balcony or hot rooftop). Shade gives plants a temperature respite.
Trees are frequently under stress because they require a lot of water to give that nice shade, but many people take them for granted and never water them.
With sparse root systems, young or freshly transplanted plants have less defenses. Additionally, seeds frequently can only germinate in a specific temperature range.
* Plants may wilt, but keep an eye on it: Wilting ironically can also be a sign of overwatering, which drowns roots in the plant. Check the soil to see whether it’s too damp.
