How can a trichocereus be made to flower?
Three Trichocereus cacti in our garden have started to bloom after a protracted and nearly record-breaking dry period of 3–4 months from midwinter to early April. It seems that in those that are ready to flower, a dry winter will encourage flowering. This winter was especially dry compared to prior ones, although not being noticeably colder than average. Even if we have less rain in the winter, where we live on the coast, there is probably still too much rain for Trichocereus to start blossoming. Since each of the three cacti was between 2-3 meters tall, height may potentially be a contributing factor. Therefore, a quick and easy option to start flowering might be to just transfer a potted cactus that is between two and three meters tall into a dry spot that is covered or outside on a verandah over the winter and to only provide very little water. Late in the fall, give a high potassium bloom booster a good watering to see if that helps. T. bridgesii ‘Psycho0,’ T. cuzcoensis, and ‘Juuls Giant x (T. pachanoi x SS02)’ are the cacti that have flowered or will do so.
For those of us who have lived in various climates or relocated cactus when moving house to another state, one thing that many Trichocereus gardeners have noticed is that their capacity to produce flowers each summer has altered. When traveling about 200 kilometers from the Lockyer Valley to the Sunshine Coast, I became aware of this. I was no longer getting any flowers from my Trichocereus, while previously I would only get a handful. Almost the same latitude, but closer to the coast. So it stands to reason that a freezing requirement, like you get with stone fruit, apples, pears, etc., must play a big role in flowering. The photoperiod would not have a significant effect due to being at the same latitude, but it could still play a little one. We used to have a few nights or a week of temperatures below 0°C each year in the Lockyer Valley, but in a frost-free area. The coldest temperatures we experience occasionally here on the Sunshine Coast are around 3oC.
The majority of Trichocereus breeders and producers are found in Australia’s southernmost states. There are no breeders in the northern states, at least not that I am aware of. Thus, it is becoming evident. The other day, I discussed this with a Brazilian acquaintance, and we agreed to attempt to come up with a procedure for the Trichocereus flowering in hotter regions.
In order to make Trichocereus cuttings bloom in warmer climates like the Sunshine Coast, my study to date. Since I didn’t have access to a grow room with a controlled temperature, I made the decision to follow the shortest path possible so that growers would find it useful. I kept my fridge at 5°C and put 4 distinct 30 cm healed cuttings of the Trichocereus clones HB01, HB02, EILEEN, and SS02 x JG. I underwent a 1000-hour trial period, or 42 days. The cuttings were then taken out, potted up, and planted outside among other cacti. They were gorgeous specimens that grew quite nicely. However, none last season either developed buds or bloomed.
In an effort to increase exposure to the cold, I chose 1500 hours at 5oC, or 9 weeks. My current trial is still going on. I’ll also test Erwin’s findings on rose quartz by conducting an 8-week experiment at 5oC.
According to Erwin, Rose Quartz is a facultative long day (LD) plant that requires a facultative chilly temperature for flowering. Areole dissection before cooling would be necessary to check for flower buds in order to ascertain whether the need for a cool temperature was brought on by vernalization or the overcoming of flower bud dormancy.
It can be decided if it is ideal to simply bring the cuttings or rooted cacti out of cooling in time for the summer flowering season, or to place them in 5oC after the winter solstice to meet some of the long day needs.
We will soon have our findings. If we don’t obtain good results, home growers without access to temperature-controlled growth chambers might not be able to do this:)

We looked at the effects of photoperiod, irradiance, cool temperature (5 oC), and administration of benzyladenine (BA) on the flowering of Echinopsis ‘Rose Quartz’. For 0, 4, 8, or 12 weeks, plants were grown in a 5 oC greenhouse with natural daylight (DL), after which they were transferred to a 22/18 oC (day/night temperature) greenhouse with short days (SD, 8-hour DL) plus 0, 25, 45, or 75 mmolmL2sL1 supplemental lighting (08001600 HR; 8-hour photoperiod), long days (LD), delivered with DL plus night-interruption lighting (NI) (22000200 HR), At that time, only DL was used to cultivate plants. On uncooled plants, the percentage of flowering plants grew as irradiance rose from 025 to +75 mmolmL2sL1, from 0% to 100% as 5°C exposure rose from 0 to 8 weeks under subsequent SD, and from 25% to 100% as 5°C exposure rose from 0 to 4 weeks under subsequent LD. The number of flowers per plant grew from 0 to 11 and from 5 to 21 flowers across irradiance treatments, respectively, as the length of the 5 oC exposure increased from 0 to 12 weeks (SD-grown) and from 0 to 8 weeks (LD-grown). On plants cooled for 8 to 12 weeks (SD-grown), the total production time ranged from 123 to 147 days, and on plants cooled for 4 to 812 weeks, it ranged from 52 to 94 days to 119153 days (LDgrown). A flower could last from one to three days. After a 12-week exposure to 5 oC, a BA spray application (1040 mgLL1) applied once or twice decreased the quantity of flowers. The growth of flowers was not photoperiodic. Plants were cultivated at 5 oC for 8 weeks, then under LD + 4575 mmolmL2sL1 for 6 weeks (16 hours; 10.912.8 molmL2dL1) at a 22/18 oC day/night temperature, resulting in a high bloom number (1721 flowers/plant) and a short production period (including cooling time, 120122 days).
