As you likely already know, camels store fat cells in their humps to help them survive in arid climates. When food and water are scarce, they use it as a source of energy. That makes us wonder if camels can drink from thorny cactus as a source of water. What about the cactus’ sharp thorns? Let’s investigate.
Because their mouths are lined with papillae, nodules that provide a rough texture and aid in chewing and food flow, camels may indeed consume cactus with thorns. Although eating a spiky cactus might be painful for camels, they have evolved to tolerate it.

Camels
Camels have adapted to consuming desert vegetation like cactus since they naturally flourish in arid and semi-arid climates. They have distinctive physical characteristics that enable this.
- They have a hard palate in the upper region of their mouth, and they use it to grind the cacti with their teeth.
- Any discomfort brought on by swallowing the spikes is mitigated by their leathery, thick lips.
- They are also helped by their rotating chew. It makes it simple to vertically slip the cactus needles into the throat.
Do camels eat the fruit of cacti?
Camels, sometimes known as “ships of the desert,” have bodies adapted for extreme weather, which allows them to survive in the desert. I recently wondered what desert camels consume out of curiosity. I am aware that cacti grow in the desert, but can camels consume cacti? I set out to investigate the likelihood of this occurring.
So, is cactus edible by camels? Cactus is edible to camels. They have Papillae, which are the lining of the mouth. When they are consuming cactus, the papillae help avoid any harm and facilitate food flow in one direction that goes directly to the stomach.
The fact that camels have a hard palate at the top of their mouths is startling. The camel’s palate protects its mouth as it eats its meal. The cactus needles slide down the camel’s throat with the aid of the papillae without harming it.
How do desert plants and animals like camels survive?
Most of a camel’s fat is stored in its humps, unlike many other mammals, allowing for improved thermoregulation. In warmer temperatures, it makes it simpler for them to expel heat from their bodies.
Rarely do camel sweat. They can tolerate the heat a lot better than we can. Their body temperature varies during the day, rising with the higher ambient temperature and dropping at night when it is cooler. Although it may seem odd that camels have fur when they live in such hot deserts, their coats really act as insulation to keep them cool. In fact, sheared camels have a tendency to perspire more.
Camels have leathery, heat-resistant pads on their feet, knees, elbows, and sternum so they may lie down without getting burned in the sweltering desert sand. Moreover, they lack a stifle fold. This is the skin that extends from the abdomen to the thighs in other animals. Camels lack this, allowing air to flow beneath their bodies even while they are resting down.
However, despite the common misconception that camels can only be found in hot climates, some can be found in far cooler locales.
In Central Asia, for instance, Bactrian camels must endure icy winters and sweltering summers. However, they are appropriately adapted, as their thick fur keeps them warm in the winter. When their surroundings starts to warm up again, this coat soon disappears. Historically, camels have thrived in colder climates; the Arctic Circle has even produced remains of extinct species.
Do camels make themselves sick?
the desert’s ships. Since the domestication of camels more than 3,000 years ago, people have relied on them for transportation through dry conditions. They can easily travel 20 miles (32 kilometers) a day in the hard desert carrying an additional 200 pounds (90 kg). Bactrian camels come in two varieties: wild and farmed. Compared to domesticated Bactrian camels, wild Bactrian camels are considerably trimmer, have smaller humps, and have less hair.
One or two humpbacks? The Bactrian camel has two hump, while the Dromedary camel has one. What’s the simplest approach to keep the names in mind? Dromedary is represented by the capital letter D, which is positioned on its side and has just one hump. Then picture the capital B turned upside-down with two humps: B for Bactrian! However, what’s inside those humps? They don’t store water, only fat. The camel uses the fat as a source of energy.
The amount of time a camel can live off of this stored energy depends on the environment and its degree of activity. Depending on how much food the camel consumes, the size of the hump might alter. The camel’s body utilises the fat reserves in the hump when food is in short supply, which causes the hump to sag and droop.
A camel can survive for several months without food and for up to a week without water. It is capable of withstanding a weight drop of 40% and then consuming up to 32 gallons (145 liters) of water in one sitting!
The exact replica. Do camel spit actually exist? Yes, and it’s really bad. Though it seems more like vomiting, they aren’t actually spitting. Although you’d assume a huge animal like a camel would be safe from predators, it is documented that wolves have attacked Bactrian camels at watering holes.
Can you hydrate yourself with cactus water?
There are five places to look, three places not to look, and one reason to disregard it all.
Water balloon fights and, of course, the desert are two areas where you don’t want to be caught without water. But occasionally things don’t turn out as expected. Perhaps you miscalculated how far you’d be hiking, got lost in Zion’s backcountry, or, worse, your water bottle spilled. You’re currently outside in one of the hottest, driest, and most oppressive settings in the nation without a drop to drink. For advice on where to look for water in the desert, we turned to Tony Nester, a survivalist and the proprietor of the outdoor survival school Ancient Pathways in Flagstaff, Arizona.
Never leave your house without it. He used the occasion to remind us that the best course of action is to be ready and bring adequate water in the first place, waving a (friendly) finger in our faces. The most crucial thing to keep in mind is that, because there isn’t much water out here, the most dependable water supply is the tap at home or in your hotel room before you go.
Look within canyons that face north “Try looking for north-facing canyons if you have a topo map or if you can see them off the land from a ridgeline. Because they don’t have southern exposure and are shielded from sunlight for a considerable portion of the day when they fill up with snowmelt or rainfall, they have a tendency to retain water in large amounts, sometimes for months at a time. We’ve discovered pour-offs in canyons that face north and have practically more water in them than a Jacuzzi. Even if the water is sluggish, muddy, and likely home to pollywogs, it is still preferable to the alternative.”
Look for trees with large leaves that enjoy water.”
If you’re in the Mojave Desert, Africa, or the Middle East, look for the bright green foliage of cottonwoods, willows, aspens, or palm palms. You’re searching for broad-leaved, vibrant green foliage, which is very different from evergreens. When I take kids on a vacation, if we see a cottonwood, sycamore, or willow from a distance and it jumps out as a green assault on your eyes because it’s the only thing nearby that isn’t sand- or rock-colored, we frequently stake some time on walking to those. At the absolute least, you can dig a hole down to the roots underground and it will fill with water. They either have water on the surface in the form of a spring, have a water hole nearby, or both.”
Look for insects and birds “Look for insects and birds. Over the years, we’ve had a lot of luck in places like the Grand Canyon and the Sonoran Desert, where we’ll be hiking for five or six miles through an incredibly remote and desolate area when all of a sudden, we come around a bend and see a hummingbird, followed by a wasp, and then perhaps a butterfly. It’s crucial to pay attention to when life suddenly appears after several hours of nothingness. That’s how we’ve found water holes. Situational awareness will aid you in noticing this kind of thing because those animals are there for a reason.”
Get to a higher location “Getting to a vantage point is the final item that can truly assist. It doesn’t entail scaling a ridgeline or anything, but if you can stand a little higher on the trail and gaze around, you may occasionally catch a glimpse of the cottonwood and willow trees as well as reflections in the water. I always have a small pair of 8×24 binoculars with me. They are a vital element of my desert equipment because they allow me to focus on a water source that is trustworthy rather than worrying about something I see in the distance and using a lot of energy to get there.”
Never take a sip from a cactus.”
Solar stills are useless. Cacti cannot be made to produce water. These are the two myths that recur frequently in books and television. Cactus does not provide “water,” only a stomachache and vomiting. In movies, you may have seen a cowboy cut off the top of a large, barrel-shaped cactus—also known as a beach ball cactus—dip his ladle in, and take a sip of water. But that’s not water. It is a poisonous fluid with a high alkalinity level. That’s an issue because if you add any of that material to your body while you’re already experiencing heat exhaustion or heat stress, you’ll put more strain on your kidneys and put yourself in danger of developing heat stroke. In essence, you’re consuming something that your body must metabolize, which is not advised. Only one of the five varieties of barrel cactus—the fishhook barrel—is non-toxic, yet you can drink from them.”
Don’t rely on the cactus fruit, but do eat it “There are many cactus fruits that can be eaten, like prickly pears. In the summer, we’ll gather those in large quantities on our courses. To remove the tiny hairs and spines, you roast them in the coals for 30 seconds before eating them. But it won’t make up for the massive amounts of fluid you’ll need in the heat—the 2 or 3 liters of water.”
Don’t follow this advice. “The bottom line is that research from the Grand Canyon and search-and-rescue operations out here demonstrates that a person who is lost and runs out of waterin the summer, with triple-digit heatcan live up to 48 hours if they are wise with their own sweat. We’re talking about this person in a situation where they run out of water. So, adopt a cowboy mentality and wait for rescuers by hiding out in the shade, remaining hidden, and avoiding the wind. However, if you choose to continue looking for water in the heat of the day without doing that, you run the risk of suffering from heat stroke and passing out within three hours simply from overworking your “engine.” So, if you’ve told someone about your hiking intentions, be patient and wait for assistance.”

In the desert, what do camels eat?
There are two types of camels: the dromedary camel and the Bactrian camel (Camelus bactrianus) (Camelus dromedarius). Dromedary camels, usually referred to as the Arabian camel, make up over 90% of all camels in the world. All dromedary camels in existence today are domesticated. Bactrian camels come in both wild and domesticated varieties.
Camels were domesticated more than 3,000 years ago. Humans utilize them for a variety of purposes, although they are most frequently used for crossing arid regions. Camels are able to go for extended periods of time without water or nourishment. They can easily carry an additional 200 pounds and cover around 20 kilometres of arduous desert walking each day. Additionally, camels give people food (meat and milk) and clothing (fiber and felt from hair).
Size and Weight:
The Bactrian camel is between 10 and 11.5 feet long, between 5.2 and 5.9 feet tall at the shoulders, and between 990 and 1,100 pounds in weight. The dromedary camel, meantime, ranges in length from 7.2 to 11.2 feet, stands 5.9 to 6.6 feet tall at the shoulder, and weighs between 880 and 1,320 pounds.
Appearance:
The camel’s hump or humps is one of its most distinctive physical characteristics. The Bactrian camel has two humps, compared to the dromedary camel’s single hump. These humps are where they store fat that can later be used as fuel.
Among their other adaptations for the desert are their double rows of extraordinarily long eyelashes, which help keep sand out of the eyes. In order to keep sand out, they can also seal their nostrils.
Diet:
Camels eat grass, grains, wheat, and oats as they are herbivores. They’ll graze and go on food hunts during the day. However, given their hard desert environment, food can be scarce. They can tear off and eat vegetation, such as thorns or salty plants that other mammals may avoid, thanks to their robust but flexible lips. Camels are ruminants, which means they vomit food back up from their stomach to chew it once more, like cows do.
A camel may go more than seven days without water and several months without 40. When food and water are in short supply, the fat that camel humps store can be used as a source of energy. The amount of time a camel may survive on these fat reserves depends on the environment and the animal’s level of activity. The size of the hump varies according to how much food the animal consumes. When food is in short supply, the camel’s hump may sag or droop.
Geography:
The Gobi Desert in China and the Bactrian steppes of Mongolia are home to the native Bactrian camel. Desert regions in North Africa and the Middle East are home to domesticated dromedary camels. Australia is home to a wild population of dromedary camels.
Breeding:
The female camel gives birth to one, or in rare cases, two infants after a gestation period of 12 to 14 months. When giving birth, a pregnant woman separates herself from the herd. She locates a quiet site with foliage for giving birth. A baby camel is born without humps, but there are tiny peaks that conceal the future location of the humps with a tassel of curly hair. Within 30 minutes of birth, the infant is able to walk.
The mother and her offspring return to the herd after about two weeks. Depending on the species and the availability of food, the mother will continue to feed her offspring for another 10 to 18 months. Around seven years old is when camels achieve their full adult size.
Social Structure:
Camels are gregarious creatures that gather together in herds for protection. A dominant adult male, females, and their young make up the herd. Bachelor herds are made up of other males who have been driven from the group.
Moans and booming bellows are only two of the sounds that camels use to communicate with one another. Newborns and their mothers hum to one another. They may blow on one another’s faces to make polite introductions. In camel society, the positions of the head, neck, ears, and tail have various connotations. Ears forward, for instance, denotes attention.
Threats:
Since the beginning of time, humanity have used camels. They have been substituted for beef cattle and utilized for transportation. The Saharan nomads of Africa still depend on dromedary camels for milk, wool, and transportation in their way of life.
Bactrian camels are under grave danger in the wild. Both for sport and for their flesh, they are hunted. Additionally, because they compete with domestic camels for grazing and drinking areas, they are murdered as a result of human conflict. As a result of human activities like illicit mining operations expanding into its habitat, habitat loss is another serious concern to the species.
Conservation Status:
According to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, the Bactrian Camel is considered to be critically endangered. Currently, there are roughly 450 Bactrian camels in Mongolia and about 650 in China.
Conservation Efforts:
The main purpose of the Wild Camel Protection Foundation, which was founded in 1997, is to safeguard wild Bactrian camels. For wild Bactrian camels, a nature reserve was established in China. The Gobi and Gashun Gobi deserts in north-west China and south-west Mongolia are home to delicate and rare desert ecosystems that serve as its habitat.
