The majority of the cactus in the Sonoran Desert are stunning to look at, but one variety can be dangerous to people if they come into contact with it.
It is the chain fruit cholla, sometimes referred to as the jumping cholla due its “jumping onto the skin or clothing of a bystander from a parent plant or the ground.
Of course, the barbed cactus spines don’t actually jump. But when individuals come too close, they quickly separate from the main plant and hook tenaciously, sometimes painfully.

Cactus needles do they jump?
The chain-fruit, also known as the jumping cholla, is known for having the ability to “jump from the ground or from a parent cactus to a person’s clothing or skin.” The “cactus that shoots needles” does not truly jump or shoot needles, so don’t panic.
It just rapidly and easily separates from the parent plant and latches obstinately onto (and occasionally into) anyone who approaches too closely or happens to be in the vicinity when a strong breeze blows. It is likely because of its ease of attachment that people refer to it as “jumping” or “shooting needles.”
To survive, the cholla detaches readily. A joint roots when it separates and subsequently drops to the ground. The plant thus grows rapidly. The spines root when they fall to the ground, establishing a new location for the cactus, if a person or animal is able to remove them after the joint has traveled on fur or skin.
Because of the mature plants’ close-growing barbed spines and lengthy “chains of fruit sans spines that hang from the trunk,” it is frequently simple for the chain-fruit cholla to catch individuals passing by. These chains can get rather long in certain places.
People can easily come into contact with the thorny spines that appear to nearly jump at them when they pause to inspect the fruit. The jumping cholla’s spines are also rather springy or bouncy, which increases their capacity to ride along with you.
Jumping chollas are among the prettiest and largest in the desert, despite their repulsive propensity to stick to people. With lengthy chains attached, they can reach heights of up to 15 feet, and from late May through June, they bloom with exquisite pink and lavender flowers.
Hand Grubbing
Cholla can be easily controlled by “grubbing with a pick mattock.” Remove the plant from the area by cutting the main root 24 inches below the surface. Regrowth should only occur in the case of immature plants that aren’t yet apparent if you meticulously remove the area. Dry the scrubbed plants by piling them. Broken joints shouldn’t be dispersed because sprouting could happen. When dried, burn the heaps to stop growth around the cholla. Rubbing minimizes re-infestation from dispersed joints during winter or drought years.
Mechanical Grubbing
By attaching a toothed fork to a front-end loader of a tractor, you can mechanically uproot cholla plants. When the cactus is uprooted, slide the fork under the plant and gently lift. To catch as many of the fractured joints as possible, tilt the bucket. Before discarding, two or three plants might be uprooted.
Mechanical grubbing is not always effective since, if the tractor operator is not careful, substantial re-infestation may take place. Avoid scattering the joints when removing the cholla from the ground. To give yourself the best chance of success, pick the best grubbing year. If the cactus is rubbed in December, January, or during a drought-stricken summer, it is more prone to dry out.

If you came across a creeping monster in the desert, you could have thought someone had used a machete to cut through a field of cacti. No, instead of seeming like a thorny snakes’ nest, this unique variety of cactus rests horizontally on the ground in colonies with only its tip pointed upward toward the sun. The crawling devil may also move across the desert on its belly, somewhat like snakes.
The creeping devil, also known by its scientific name Stenocereus eruca, is the only known moving cactus in the world and is an endemic to the state of Baja California Sur in northwest Mexico. The plant’s prostrate position aids in both its ability to move across the desert for extended periods of time as well as its ability to survive in solitude. It accomplishes this by spreading out horizontally from its stem while also eliminating its tail. It develops new roots as it gently creeps across the desert floor in order to attach itself and to take in water and nutrients. The plant receives nutrients back through the roots as a result of its back end disintegrating and assimilating with the soil. The creeping demon must, in a sense, kill off a portion of itself in order to travel, but this dead portion then feeds the newly formed living portion.
The climate where a creeping devil grows determines the pace of growth and the speed at which it moves. It moves at a speed of two feet each year in its natural region, where the climate is humid and marine.
This cactus can reproduce sexually, but due to its isolation and the dearth of pollinators in its natural habitat, it can also do so by cloning individual sections of itself, which separate from their bases, die, and then grow into new plants on their own.
Unfortunately, this enigmatic and unusual cactus is officially listed as an endangered plant in Mexico, mostly because of illegal trade. Cactus collectors will spend a lot of money to include it in their personal succulent gardens due to its uniqueness. On the illegal market, a single creeping devil stem can fetch between $4000 and $5000.
However, the agricultural sector poses a threat to this amazing cactus as well. To make room for their grazing cattle, for which the creeping devil is both an annoyance and a barrier to grazing, farmers will decimate entire colonies.
Poisonous jumping cholla?
A bouncing cholla section may strike your face, another person’s face, or a pet if you try to shrug it off. To get rid of it, use sticks or a big comb. Segments may fly in a high wind and strike anyone nearby. According to KCET, a reflex to suck the uncomfortable glochids out of the skin can result in them becoming embedded in the soft tissues of the mouth, tongue, throat, and windpipe, which might be fatal.

How will a cactus react if you touch it?
Cactus spines are modified leaves that resemble needles. Cactus may lose less water in hot and arid environments because of its needle-like adaptability. Additionally, they give out some shade and are a fantastic deterrent to animals that might try to eat them.
Some cactus feature camouflage-producing spines, which further helps to defend them from predators who could try to consume them. Less light reaches the stem of the plant because the cactus spines reflect light (reducing water loss).
What types of cactus spines are there?
Various cactus plants may have one of a few different types of cactus spines. Some spine types could be more difficult to remove and hurt more when pricked. Types of cactus spines include:
- tiny, hair-like spines (such as in genus of Cephalocereus)
- Stiffened spines (such as in Mammillaria gracilis)
- rounded spines (such as in Sclerocactus papyracanthus)
- Glochids (such as in Opuntia rufida)
- bent spines (most cacti)
One of the sorts of cactus spines that causes the most discomfort is the glochid. This is due to the glochids’ brittleness and easy skin-breaking. This makes removing them from the skin extremely difficult.
This also applies to cholla or barbed spines. They are extremely painful and easily penetrate skin and soft tissues. These cacti belong to the Opuntioideae subfamily, which also includes Chollas and Cylindropuntia.
Because they adhere to flesh, clothing, and fur with ease, cholla cacti are sometimes known as jumping chollas. They must be carefully removed from the skin since if done by hand, they would cling to the fingers.
Is cholla fruit edible?
For many generations, the Sonoran Desert’s springtime signaled the beginning of the cholla bud harvest. Additionally, there is renewed interest in the prickly plants due to the need for sustainable, regional cuisine.
Recently, the Native Seeds/SEARCH organization provided a training on gathering and preparing desert food. Arizona attracted participants from all over. The session was run by ethnobotanist Martha Ames Burgess in the Tucson Mountains, in her home.
The Sonoran Desert is home to a variety of cholla plants, including the red-flowered Christmas cholla, chain fruit cholla, pencil cholla, and teddybear cholla. Cholla plants have a dense layer of needle-sharp spines covering them, but all of their buds and fruits are edible.
Burgess advised carrying a comb for the larger fragments and tweezers for the smaller spines.
The workshop attendees followed Burgess into the desert, where staghorn chollas are abundant, carrying their bags, buckets, metal tongs, and hand-held whisk brooms.
“Could you describe the types of things we’re trying to harvest, please? questioned a workshop attendee.
Burgess indicated a flower bud that was perched above a pale green knob. The edible component is that green knob. It resembles a grape in size. Burgess said that the shimmering speck that appeared to be a dew drop on top of the flower bud actually has the viscosity of honey.
“An extra-floral nectary is the cause. It was a mystery to scientists until they started to observe. Ants will be seen climbing this plant and munching like pigs at a trough, she warned. “The plant is the one that has figured out how to feed its helpers. The ants or other munching animals will repel the packrat. Perhaps ground squirrels with round tails, perhaps rapacious birds, perhaps even cactus bugs. So, there is a symbiosis.
When Burgess first arrived in Tucson in the 1960s, Juanita Ahill, a Tohono O’odham elder, taught her everything she needed to know about desert foods and remedies.
According to Burgess, “She would respect the plants and express her gratitude to them. She would sacrifice a hair from her head as an offering to the plant. She had provided water and gorp in my presence. It has to do with having a grasp of how the world operates. You can’t take without giving something back.
After the participants had gathered a few cups of cholla buds, Burgess demonstrated how to roll the buds on a metal grate with a hand-held whisk broom to remove the spines. She gathered a handful of the cleaned buds after a little while. She remarked, “They feel like rubber balls.
But they aren’t quite ready to eat. Oxalic acid serves as the biological defense against herbivores in all cholla buds and fruit. The buds can’t be eaten uncooked since they irritate the throat. Oxalic acid simply has to be boiled for 15 minutes. Burgess led everyone back to her patio where she heated a kettle of water to boiling temperature on a Coleman stove.
They resemble cocktail party gherkin pickles when stabbed with toothpicks and distributed. The initial bite has a sticky consistency that is similar to that of okra. However, the flavors were likened favorably by workshop attendees to Brussels sprouts, asparagus, and artichokes.
Burgess cooked a few cups of boiling buds in a mole sauce while tossing a handful of the chopped buds into a salad. The delicacy from the desert is a delicious addition to salads, salsas, and other dishes.
A walking cactus is what?
Researchers have found what they are referring to as the missing link in China: a walking cactus. Arthropods like spiders and strange-looking worm-like critters are supposed to have evolved from the same ancestor, the walking cactus.

An major gap in the history of the development of insects, spiders, and crustaceans may have been filled by the discovery of the fossils of a 10-legged wormy creature that lived 520 million years ago.
The so-called walking cactus is a member of the lobopodians, a class of extinct worm-like organisms presumed to be the ancestors of arthropods. Arthropods, such as spiders, have segmented bodies and limbs with joints that are protected by a hard shell.
All lobopodian remains had soft bodies and soft limbs prior to the discovery of the walking cactus, Diania cactiformis, according to Jianni Liu, the primary researcher who is connected to Northwest University in China and Freie University in Germany.
According to Liu of LiveScience, “Walking cactus is highly important because it is sort of a missing link from lobopodians to arthropods.” “Arthropods are thought to have descended from lobopodians, but up until recently, there was no fossil that could be used to prove that the first arthropod to have jointed legs existed. Based on the discovery of 30 incomplete fossils and three complete ones in the southern Chinese province of Yunnan, Liu and other researchers characterized the extinct animal. The walking cactus was roughly 2.4 inches (6 cm) long and had a body divided into nine segments with ten pairs of hardened, jointed legs.
It’s unclear how the lanky worm supported itself. According to Liu, the animal may have utilized its proboscis, a tube-like mouth, to suck small creatures from the mud or its spiky front legs to seize its prey.
Modern velvet worms, which are thought to be the only living relatives of all arthropods, have preserved clues to the evolution of arthropods. These land-dwelling worms, once mistaken for slugs, are almost entirely soft-bodied save from their tough claws and teeth.
According to Graham Budd, a professor of paleobiology at Uppsala University in Sweden who was not involved in the current study, the discovery of the walking cactus helps fill in the evolutionary history between the velvet worms and contemporary arthropods, which are, in terms of numbers and diversity, the most dominant group of animals on the planet.
According to Budd, the walking cactus is the first and only instance in which an organism that cannot be identified as an arthropod has rigid, jointed limbs designed for walking.
Budd is not, however, persuaded by the researchers’ claim that the hardened legs of the walking cactus were directly handed on to contemporary arthropods.
He told LiveScience, “I am not convinced that it is a direct ancestor or as closely connected to live arthropods as they imply. I would like to see more proof, but the good news is that new information continues emerging.
For instance, it’s plausible that the walking cactus has little in common with contemporary arthropods and that its stiffened legs have undergone various evolutionary processes. According to Budd, it’s also likely that the bodies of early arthropods hardened before the legs did.
He said that recent years have seen a rise in scientific agreement on the evolution of arthropods as a result of new fossil discoveries, particularly those from China.
