Australia doesn’t have any native cactus. Cacti are native to the Americas, and many kinds are dangerous to Queensland’s ecology, agriculture, society, and public health. Invasive cactus species, such as the iconic prickly pear, have spread far throughout Queensland.
Which nation is home to the most cacti?
Cactus, often known as cacti or cactuses, belongs to the order Caryophyllales and is a family of flowering plants with about 2,000 species and 139 genera. From British Columbia and Alberta southward, cacti are native to most of North and South America; the southernmost portion of their distribution reaches deep into Chile and Argentina. The highest number and variety of species are found in Mexico. The only cactus that might be native to the Old World are Rhipsalis species, which are found in Sri Lanka, Madagascar, and East Africa. Few cactus species exist in tropical or subtropical climes, although the majority do and are well adapted to dry conditions. List of Cactaceae plants is also available.
Do succulents grow in Australia?
Instead of the many magnificent native Australian types, most Australians probably picture the exotic succulents and cacti they see in their neighborhood plant nursery when they think of “succulent plants.” However, Australia is home to 400 or so succulent species, which may be found in all of the country’s states and in the majority of its areas.
In coastal, inland, temperate, subtropical, and tropical habitats, succulents can be found. Succulents comprise a variety of plants, many of which are groundcovers or low-growing, such as orchids, hoyas, shrubs, and even the boab. While species can grow in a variety of soil types, some succulent plants are lithophytes and epiphytes, which are plants that grow on other plants (plants that grow in or on rocks).
On June 20, 2017, we will release the Australian Succulents stamp issue to highlight some of these incredible “water-storers.” Four endemic succulent plant species from Australia are depicted on the stamps, which were created by Janet Boschen.
Many of the related objects and the pictures used in the stamp designs come from the Attila and Michele Kapitany collection. In fact, Attila gave a lot of advise and support during the stamp issue’s creation, starting from the very beginning. He has devoted more than 35 years of his professional life to researching, cultivating, and promoting Australian succulent plants to gardeners and the general public, particularly the lesser-known types. His enthusiasm for cacti and succulents is well recognized.
Attila has appeared on television, radio, and the speaking circuits both domestically and abroad. Attila served as the Cactus and Succulent Society of Australia’s immediately preceding president for ten years. He routinely contributes to publications, journals, and newspapers in Australia as a member of the Horticultural Media, writing about the benefits of succulents. With Rudolf Schulz, Attila co-authored seven volumes on succulents. His eighth book, on Australian native species, was a solo effort. More recently, he also wrote a series of eight booklets on xerophytic Australian flora. Attila and Michele’s magnificent, expansive “succulent” garden in their Melbourne home is further proof of Attila’s lifelong passion in succulent plants.
Attila discussed his love of succulent plants, including the four varieties depicted on the stamps, with us.
Succulence, succulents, or both? The term “succulent” is frequently used as an adjective, such as “a succulent plant,” as well as a noun, such as “a succulent.” Botanists refer to plants with succulence by the more precise term “a succulent plant.” Many “succulent plants,” which are native to arid and seasonally dry locations, have evolved to store water in their leaves, stems, trunks, or roots in order to survive dry spells. A succulent plant, like common pigface, would significantly shrivel after several months without rain. However, after a deluge of winter rain, the plant rehydrates and becomes plump and extremely succulent once more.
In comparison to other succulent plants, are Australian succulent plants particularly unique?
Worldwide, there aren’t many differences between succulent plants on different continents, although Australian plants with a lot of water storage, or succulence, stand out more after floods. In the majority of the dry and semi-arid zones of Australia, there are minor ephemeral species.
What intriguing details about native Australian succulents might the general public not be aware of?
The majority of Australians are aware of the typical succulent plants found in nurseries, marketplaces, and on grandmothers’ front porches. These are some of the most garden-resistant species in the entire globe. At most, one to two hundred species. The general public is less aware that there are at least 400 succulent species in Australia and that there are more than 12,000 known species of succulent plants globally. Surprisingly, Australia is importing and cultivating an increasing number of foreign species, but there is little to no interest in testing our local species. To rectify this and give Australian succulent plants a fair chance is my mission statement.
Can you provide us with some interesting information about each of the species depicted on the stamp?
This plant seems pretty strange in its natural environment. The color and texture of its leaf frequently match that of the rocky gravel in which it grows. Botanists can only determine the location of plants by looking at their blossoms, and that region is central Western Australia. The blossoms can grow to be enormous and striking. They are more ostentatious due to the longer central stigma.
“The height of this species reaches about 55 centimeters. Its remarkable construction includes multiple-segmented stems that serve as leaves and even go through the photosynthesis process. It can be found in western Northern Territory, northwestern South Australia, and north, central, and south-west central Western Australia. Indigenous people continue to gather the edible, wheat-like seed produced by this species today.
It is also known as a “jellybean plant,” and its vibrant greens, yellows, oranges, and reds are on display. It initially takes the form of a rosette, then branches out to grow up to 80 centimeters in diameter. Calandrinias are unquestionably the most stunning succulents in Australia, both for their vibrant flowers, which can cover the ground after a desert rain, and for their sometimes-almost-as-bright foliage! The most common succulent in Australia is an Australian calandrinia, which has a large number of annual and perennial species. Native Americans preferred using these plants as a food and water source in desert areas. For example, emu chicks in dry places are entirely dependent on calandrinias for the first six weeks of their life, and many other animals and insects also rely significantly on them for survival.
“This species is a perennial low-growing shrub that grows to a height of about 50 centimeters and a width of about 1.5 meters. It can be found in north-western New South Wales, south-western Queensland, northern South Australia, and south-western Western Australia. The flower of this species is quite unique, with a fleshy green outer portion. The sepals and petals are combined into one in this instance.
You have a sizable collection of stamps, many of which include your photos. Can you give me additional information about it, including how and when you assembled the collection?
We have a one-acre garden with more than 10,000 plants, many of which are succulents, that my wife Michele and I created. We frequently introduce new varieties of largely Australian species to test them in our garden, determine whether they are suitable for gardens, and show them off to the public on set huge open days. As part of the Open Garden Scheme, we had more than 1,100 visitors on a particular weekend. Every year we explore the Australian deserts, taking hundreds of thousands of pictures. We were able to test out really rare and unique species thanks to a government permit for seed collection.
It would seem that succulents provide some excellent possibilities for gardeners. Please elaborate.
“Succulents are leading the way in water-conserving, low-maintenance gardening worldwide. They provide a vast diversity of form, color, and applications, such as the well-liked vertical and rooftop gardens.
On this particular issue, you served as the researcher’s advisor. How enthusiastic are you about the stamp release?
“I am extremely happy that these plants are receiving the recognition they deserve and that the Australian public, many of whom may not be aware that we have such lovely native succulents, will be introduced to them! Due to my long-standing enthusiasm for this topic, working with the team on this stamp issue has been tremendously satisfying.

Where can you find cacti?
The nations of the New World are home to cacti. In these nations, they can be found in a wide range of habitats. The drought-prone dry regions of Mexico, the south-western United States, and parts of South America in the south-western Andes are where you can find cacti species that are suited to live in arid settings. Brazil, Bolivia, and certain Central American nations all have damp climates where cacti can thrive. They can be found in the local Atlantic woodlands, mountain ranges, and other moist environments. In certain other regions of the world, like as Africa and Sri Lanka, there is only one species of cactus, the Rhipsalis baccifera. Many of the species have been spread over the globe by humans. Cacti are already growing in their natural environments throughout Australia and the Mediterranean areas.
Cacti are exclusively found in America, right?
A cactus is a member of the plant family Cactaceae[a], which has about 127 genera and about 1750 recognized species. Cactaceae belongs to the order Caryophyllales.
[4] The Latin word “cactus” is derived from the Ancient Greek word “kktos,” which Theophrastus first used to refer to a spiky plant whose identify is currently unknown. [5] There are many different sizes and shapes of cacti. Most cactus reside in settings that experience at least some drought, despite the fact that some species can tolerate fairly humid situations. Many of them can even be found in the Atacama Desert, one of the driest places on Earth, where they exist in extremely dry circumstances. Cacti have developed a variety of adaptations to conserve water as a result. As an illustration, nearly all cacti are succulents, which means that their swollen, fleshy sections are designed to store water. Unlike many other succulents, most cacti only have a stem where this crucial process occurs. The majority of cacti species no longer have actual leaves; instead, they only have spines, which are heavily modified leaves. Spines help limit water loss by slowing air movement around the cactus and offering some shade, in addition to protecting it from herbivores. Photosynthesis is performed by cacti’s expanded stems in the lack of real leaves. Except for Rhipsalis baccifera, which also grows in Africa and Sri Lanka, all of the Americas, from Patagonia in the south to sections of western Canada in the north, are home to cacti.
Areoles, a type of greatly shortened branch, are specialized structures that create cactus spines. Cacti can be identified by their areoles. Areoles also produce multipetalled, tubular blooms in addition to spines. Because many cacti have extended dormant periods and short growing seasons, they may respond fast to any rainfall. This is made possible by their large but shallow root systems, which swiftly absorb any water that reaches the ground surface. Because cactus stems are frequently ribbed or fluted, they can easily stretch and contract to quickly absorb water after rain and then hold onto it during protracted droughts. The majority of cacti use a unique process called “crassulacean acid metabolism” (CAM) as part of photosynthesis, similar to other succulent plants. Unlike photosynthesis, which occurs during the day, transpiration—during which carbon dioxide enters the plant and water escapes—occurs at night. The plant converts the carbon dioxide it absorbs into malic acid and stores it there until daybreak, when it is solely used for photosynthesis. The cooler, more humid nighttime hours are when transpiration occurs, which greatly reduces water loss.
The globe-shaped stems of many smaller cacti combine the maximum volume of water storage with the smallest surface area of transpiration loss. The largest[b] free-standing cactus is Pachycereus pringlei, which reaches a maximum height of 19.2 m (63 ft)[7], while Blossfeldia liliputiana has the lowest diameter at maturity, measuring just around 1 cm (0.4 in). [8] During a downpour, a mature saguaro (Carnegiea gigantea) is believed to be capable of soaking up 200 US gallons (760 l; 170 imp gal) of water. [9] Only a few species look significantly like the rest of the family. Plants belonging to the genera Leuenbergeria, Rhodocactus, and Pereskia resemble nearby trees and bushes, at least on the surface. They have enduring leaves and, as they age, stems covered with bark. Despite their appearance, they are recognized as cacti by their areoles and have numerous water-saving adaptations. Leuenbergeria is thought to be very closely related to the original species from which all cacti descended. Other cacti develop as forest climbers and epiphytes in tropical areas (plants that grow on trees). Their stems often have fewer or even no spines and are flattened, almost leaf-like in appearance, like the well-known Christmas or Thanksgiving cactus (in the genus Schlumbergera).
Many types of cacti are produced as beautiful plants, while others are raised for fodder or forage, and yet others are utilized as food (particularly their fruit). An bug that lives on some cactus produces cochineal.
Many succulent plants, both in the Old and New Worlds, have spiky stems, including some members of the Euphorbiaceae (euphorbias), which is why they are frequently mistakenly called “cactus.”

Cactus can be found in Canada?
The only place in Canada where you can find the Eastern Prickly-pear Cactus is southern Ontario. There are two known sites, both of which are on sand spits beside Lake Erie. According to historical accounts, this cactus may have historically been slightly more common in regions close to Lake Erie and Lake St.
Which state is famous for its cacti?
Only a few hardy species of opuntia and escobaria are present in almost every US state and southern Canadian province, although they are much more common in the southwest’s arid areas. Cacti are prevalent in six US states, including (roughly) the following: Arizona (83), California (35), New Mexico (56), Nevada (26), Utah (34) and Texas (91).
The Sonoran, Chihuahuan, and Mojave deserts correspond to the lower elevations and southernmost places where the densest populations can be found. The hottest part of the Sonoran Desert in southeast California and southwest Arizona also has a relatively small number of species for the same reason. The best places to see cacti are south and southeast Arizona, south New Mexico, and far west Texas, especially in the Big Bend region. Of these three, the Mojave has somewhat fewer species due to its low rainfall.
The golden cereus, Munz’s cholla, coastal cholla, chaparral prickly pear, and San Diego barrel cactus are just a few of the rare cactus species that grow in California’s far southwest, close to San Diego, and down the coast into Santa Barbara. These can be seen in locations like Torrey Pines State Reserve, Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, and Cabrillo National Monument, but the majority of California species are found in the southeasterly deserts, specifically in Mojave, Anza Borrego, Death Valley, and Joshua Tree National Parks. Joshua Tree is particularly fruitful because it is located on the border of the Sonoran and Mojave deserts, and as a result, has plants typical of both.
Arizona has two National Park Service (NPS) locations dedicated to particular cacti: Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument in the far south, bordering Mexico, and Saguaro National Park on either side of Tucson. With approximately 30 species, some of which are fairly rare (like senita), this latter area is one of the best cactus places in the entire state. Other cactus-filled desert preserves include Kofa NWR, Sonoran Desert National Monument, Cabeza Prieta NWR, Ironwood Forest National Monument, and Agua Fria National Monument. Several small state parks, like Catalina, Sabino Canyon, Lost Dutchman, and Alamo Lake, also provide an excellent introduction to the local flora. The region in the far southeast between Nogales and the Chiricahua Mountains, which is where certain plants from the adjacent Chihuahuan Desert may be seen, as well as some that are significantly more frequent over the border in Mexico, has the most uncommon species, except from Organ Pipe NM. Cacti, however, are abundant throughout the state; for instance, the Canyon De Chelly National Monument is home to 12 different species. A few areas in the north also contain some extremely rare species, such as the pediocactus bradyii in the Marble Canyon region and the sclerocactus sileri on the Kaibab Plateau. Visit a botanical garden, like the Boyce Thompson Arboretum in Superior or the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum west of Tucson, if you want to observe a wide variety of plant species all in one spot.
Around 20 different varieties of cacti can be found in Nevada’s far south, on the edge of the Mojave Desert. These include the hills that border Lake Mead and Lake Mohave, the foothills of Mount Charleston, and Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. The most prominent species are the Engelmann’s hedgehog cactus, California barrel cactus, many headed barrel, five different varieties of cholla, and several opuntia. The Great Basin Desert covers the rest of the state, which has fewer cacti but still contains a few very unusual species (sclerocactus).
The majority of the state of Utah is covered in cacti, including the Colorado Plateau, the Uinta Basin in the northeast, and low-lying areas of the southwest (on the edge of the Mojave Desert). The well-known national parks (Arches, Capital Reef, Zion, and Canyonlands) are each home to more than a dozen species, and Utah contains about six forms of cactus that are unique to the US. However, there is no one optimum spot (sclerocactus and pediocactus species).
Over 50 cactus species can be found in the Chihuahuan Desert, which makes up the southern third of New Mexico. These species can be found in places like Oliver Lee Memorial State Park, the Carlsbad Caverns National Park backcountry, and (in a botanical garden setting) Living Desert State Park in Carlsbad.
With around 100 different cactus species, Texas is the state with the most. The majority are found along the Rio Grande, close to the Mexican border, particularly in the Big Bend region, in Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park. In particular, the species of coryphantha, echinomastus, and escobaria are at their northernmost ranges on this terrain. In the far south, in the area of Brownsville, there is another cluster of rare species. Cacti can also be found in the Davis Mountains/Fort Davis, Guadalupe Mountains, and Black Gap WMA in the Chihuahuan Desert.
