Do Succulents Change Color

Stress often causes succulent plants to change their color. If you want that hue to pop, stress is entirely normal and encouraged. Water, sunlight, and temperature are the three factors that drive succulents to change their color.

Are succulents’ colors affected by sunlight?

Succulents experience “stress” as a result of a changing environment, and while this may seem negative, it happens frequently in nature. Seasonal changes, times of drought or flooding, and several other circumstances can naturally cause stress in plants. As a result, under stress, succulents change color.

You’ll need to stress your succulents in order to change their color. You can alter a number of environmental elements in your succulent’s habitat to alter its color while still preserving its health and preventing it from dying.

Increase or Decrease Sunlight Exposure

You will need to pay closer attention to this feature than the others because too much exposure to the sun can harm your succulent. How quickly you may vary your succulents’ exposure to sunshine depends depend on where they typically reside.

You shouldn’t bring your succulent into full sunshine right away if it spends most of the time indoors or in a shaded spot where it doesn’t get much sunlight. The same holds true if you reduce the succulent’s exposure to sunshine. Any extremely significant alterations to its environment could be harmful.

A rough estimate for the changeover period is one to two weeks. You can adjust the succulent’s exposure to sunlight by around 30 minutes every few days, or nearly every four days, during the transition phase. Giving your succulent a few days of exposure to the same amount of sunshine will give it a better chance to adapt without being overly stressed.

You’ll start to see some red, yellow, purple, or blue in your succulent’s leaves as you expose it to more sunlight. This happens when the carotenoid and anthocyanin pigments in the succulent that aid in shielding it from excessive sunlight become more active, changing the color of the plant.

Your succulent’s new color will depend on the type it is; some are more likely to turn yellow, orange, or red, while others will become purple or blue.

Your succulent will begin to turn green or, if it was already green, turn a darker shade of green if you reduce the amount of sunshine it receives. This is because the pigment chlorophyll is becoming more active, allowing the succulent to continue photosynthesizing by allowing it to absorb more light from its surroundings.

If your succulent starts to turn brown, it is either receiving too much or not enough sunlight. To give it more time to adjust, try keeping it exposed for a few more days. As changing more than one aspect at once is bad for the plant, be sure to continue providing your succulent ample water.

Decrease Amount of Water

Succulents are extremely resilient plants that have evolved to thrive in environments where other plants cannot, like a desert, for example. This implies that they can go for a very long time without water without experiencing any negative effects. The opposite, however, is true when it receives an excessive amount of water. A succulent that receives excessive water will almost probably die or suffer serious damage.

Due to this, you should only utilize water stress by reducing the succulent’s water intake and never the other way around. To achieve this, wait an additional day or two before watering your succulent when you notice the soil surrounding it is feeling dry. This increases the succulent’s resistance to “drought” and causes stress that alters color.

The carotenoid and anthocyanin pigments in the succulent will be activated by water-induced stress, and it will gradually start to turn a blue, purple, red, or yellow color. Because these plants are already so drought-resistant, water-induced stress manifests its effects more slowly than sunlight stress. This is why, even if you don’t notice any benefits right away, it’s crucial to avoid substantially reducing the amount of water you give your succulent.

Change the Temperature

The most challenging way to try to change your succulent’s color is to stress it out with temperature. In the end, we have no influence over the weather. So if you want the approach that requires the least amount of work, this is the one you could pick.

Your succulents’ color will naturally alter as the seasons and temperature change. All you have to do is observe it taking place. To avoid severe damage or death, you must, however, make sure that your succulents are never exposed to temperatures below freezing.

It is advised to bring your succulents indoors during the winter if you live anywhere where temperatures fall below freezing. Otherwise, your succulents should be content to spend the entire year outdoors.

Why are my cacti changing color?

Harsh environmental factors, including as exposure to the sun, extreme temperatures, underwatering, low nourishment, and bad soil, lead succulents to turn red. Basically, stress causes succulents to change their color. The color shift is an adaptive reaction to the environment’s changes.

For instance, if your succulent plant was kept indoors for months and you suddenly moved it outside, it will attempt to adjust to its new environment. One indication that your succulent has started to make significant modifications is a change in color.

However, a succulent’s color may not simply be shifting as it adjusts to its new surroundings.

Succulents can occasionally change color as a result of owner neglect. Your plants will communicate with you when they are in need of your attention, sometimes subtly and other times through outwardly obvious signs that grab your attention right away. This happens when you fail to provide your plants with adequate nutrition, water, or if you keep them in infertile soil.

When your succulents turn red, what does that mean?

Are there several types of stress in succulents—good stress and negative stress? Yes. In general, a healthy plant under stress will retain its original form and characteristics while changing its color. A troubled, stressed-out plant will appear warped, malformed, or merely sickly.

Knowing the type of plant you have will assist you identify any problems it may be having. When subjected to intense heat or direct sunlight, some succulent plants develop scarlet tips on their leaves. The plant produces a crimson pigment (carotenoids) on its leaf to withstand the intense heat and shield itself from sunburn. We can refer to this as “positive stress” because it enhances the beauty and color of the plant rather than harming it.

However, reddish tinges on the leaves and stems of succulent plants may indicate an insect infestation, such as spider mites, which leave red stains on the plant. Additionally, the leaves would be crooked, which would indicate that something was amiss with the plant. We can refer to this as “bad stress” because the plant is genuinely suffering, and you must act quickly to preserve it.

If your plant starts to take on a reddish tint, check to see if this is a natural occurrence or if the plant is being bothered by something else.

Some plants respond well to intense light, scorching heat, and extreme aridity by turning a lovely shade of yellow-orange. This is how the plant defends itself from the harsh environmental circumstances. Because the plant is not in distress and you don’t need to act right away, this is “positive stress.”

On the other hand, excessive watering or soil that is always damp might cause a plant to turn yellow. You’ll see that the leaves have begun to discolor and have also become squishy and mushy. It’s important to address this “bad stress” before it gets worse.

Unlike “bad stress,” “good stress” is not accompanied by symptoms or indicators that the plant is in distress, such as squishy leaves.

Under “positive stress,” several plants, including the Echeveria “black prince” and the Aeonium arboreum “Zwartkop” (Black Rose), change to a lovely hue of dark purple to black. These same plants will lose their lovely coloring and turn green if you pamper them, put them in the shade, and water them frequently.

However, if you notice that some of your succulents are going black from the bottom up and losing their leaves, this is unquestionably a sign of “bad stress.” When a plant rots from the root up, this is when it. The stems decay and the leaves turn black. If you don’t respond quickly, you risk losing the plant.

Knowing your plants well enough to determine if they are experiencing good or bad stress doesn’t take much time. You would eventually be able to distinguish between them.

The one with green foliage is newly potted in new potting soil and kept in the shade.

Why is my succulent becoming a pale green color?

The cells of the plant have more anthocyanins as a result of exposure to high temperatures or greater sunlight. These anthocyanins shield the plant from excessive UV exposure as well as drastic temperature changes. As the temperature drops, anthocyanins become more stable. This explains why succulents frequently turn colorful throughout the winter.

Carotenoid (yellow)

Chlorophyll, a green pigment that is produced in vast quantities during the summer when photosynthesis is occurring at a high pace, masks carotenoid. However, as the temperature drops and photosynthetic activity declines, chlorophyll production also does so. As a result, the succulent appears more yellow when carotenoid levels are high.

Trying this with your own succulents is not advised. The findings reveal some plants that have been gravely mistreated, but they can also show you which succulents are in the wrong lighting conditions.

What does light stress look like?

In order to replicate shipment in a dark box, we initially placed two sets of various succulents under a dark cover for four days. One pair was still under the cover with water and ventilation but no light after four days of darkness. The other set was relocated to a spot with all-day sun after being taken out of its package. Although light conditions were more akin to 70 percent sun than genuine “full sun” due to the dense smoke from California’s major wildfires, you can still see dramatic reactions in the spectrum of results below.

You can see how drastically the plants kept in the dark altered over the course of two weeks on the left side of the diagram. Each plant’s core began to fade and turn green, and the leaves on each plant’s rosettes expanded wide and flat in search of sunshine.

The plants that were moved from a dark box into direct sunlight are seen to the right. The hues became more vibrant and changed from green to crimson tones. How can I make my succulents more colorful?

Time is the secret to a good adjustment in lighting conditions. The succulents in the experiment above were severely harmed by switching abruptly between two extremes of light. Regardless of whether they exhibit indicators of insufficient or excessive light,

It’s also an excellent example of how to take care of newly delivered succulents that you own. The plants in our experiment recovered in a total of eight days, but recovery times will vary by region and season. It will be simple to adjust as necessary as long as you’re making small changes and keeping an eye out for indicators of both too much and too little light. The general steps are as follows:

  • Plants should be started outside where they will have bright shade all day for 4–7 days.
  • Adaptation should take an extra 4–7 days after moving to a region with partial sun (approximately 4 hours of sun in the morning and bright shadow the rest of the day).
  • Examine the change in color and gradually move the plants to a spot that receives more or less sun as necessary.

Bonus advice: Are you not seeing as much color in your succulent as you anticipated from additional sunlight? Try using less water or placing the plant outside during the winter (keep soft succulents above freezing). Water and temperature stress can also cause a flush of pigments, just like light stress. Always keep an eye on your succulent to ensure that a prolonged period of drought or being below its minimum cold hardiness doesn’t push it to the point of death due to stress.
