Abstract:
Cacti have shallow roots, with the average depths for their diverse native Sonoran Desert species ranging from 7 to 11 cm and 15 cm for cultivated opuntioids; the cultivated vine cactus Hylocereus undatus has even shallower roots.
Although this shallowness makes it easier to absorb water after light rains, it also exposes the roots to high temperatures near the soil surface.
Extreme temperatures reduced the uptake of the essential stain neutral red into root cortical cells, with 50% inhibition (LT50) occurring for Nopalea cochenillifera, Opuntia ficus-indica, and O. robusta at an average of 7C for low temperatures and 57C for high temperatures, and for H. undatus growing at a moderate day/night air temperature of 25/20C, at 2C and 52C, respectively. The opuntioid LT50s showed seasonal adaptation to changing ambient temperatures, declining 1.2C as day/night air temps were lowered by 20C and rising 4.4C as they were raised by 20C.
In order to measure root growth, respiration, and layers with deadly temperatures, an equation is proposed to estimate soil temperature as a function of soil depth and time.
In this regard, the ability of most cacti to be cultivated today and in the future should not be constrained by the roots’ sensitivity to low temperatures.
Although fewer cacti roots may be found in the topmost soil levels as a result of rising air and soil temperatures brought on by global climate change, other (non-CAM) perennials should experience far larger restrictions.
A cactus has what kind of roots?
Cacti also contain lateral roots, which branch out frequently as they grow, in addition to taproots. Some cacti rely on this network of roots to keep them in place while also gathering food and water because they lack taproots. Saguaros can swiftly absorb rainwater from even small showers because they have an enormous number of tiny roots in the top 3 inches of soil. A young saguaro that was just 6 inches tall was discovered to have a root system that covered a 6 1/2-foot area but went no deeper than around 3 inches.
Why are the roots of cacti shallow?
Cactus roots assist in preserving and collecting water in a number of different ways. Some cacti have vast, lateral root systems that grow shallowly away from the plant (e.g. some prickly pear roots spread 10 to 15 feet away). The shallow roots help the plant maximize water intake from a wide region in brief rains that only moisten a few inches of soil.
As the water supply changes, cactus roots also undergo physical changes. Following a downpour, existing, parched roots become more water conductive, and fresh, water-absorbing rain roots emerge. The rain roots shrink and fall off during droughts, while the existing roots dry up. Existing roots contract, forming an air gap that helps keep water from leaking out of the roots and returning to the soil. Water loss can also be reduced by a corky layer covering the roots.
That may be the case in a desert, but we have discovered that in a thickly planted garden with water present in the (fast-draining) soil (that you have added to or modified in your garden), the roots can be deeper. Roots will seek water deeper rather than wider due to competition amongst nearby plants, something they won’t do in the desert but will in your garden, and they’ll want to stay there once they do.
In fact, we’ve noticed that over the winter, they will sink till they reach the water table before rotting off and rising back to the drier portions of the soil, which also tends to correspond with the depth at which you modified your soil to make it more quickly draining.
As a result, they will spend the first few weeks of spring establishing new roots before beginning to grow new branches. This cycle occurs every year, and if your soil hasn’t been modified deeply enough, the cactus will finally collapse.
The Takeaway: Be sure to modify your soil so that it drains quickly and is deep enough so that the roots have enough space to grow and survive the winters. At least 2 feet of depth is advised for larger cacti, and they shouldn’t be crowded too closely together either. Give the roots space to expand above the water table over the winter.
Cacti have deep roots, right?
Cacti typically have a type of root system that is widely dispersed but not very deep. They have fiber-like roots that are specially designed to more readily absorb the moisture in the environment. They only go a very small way into the ground. For instance, a young Saguaro has a root system with a diameter of 2 meters, a height of 12 meters, and a depth of 10 meters. The key reason for its ability to survive in the hard weather and water shortage is because of its extensive root system.
The majority of cacti have root systems that resemble fibers and spread out around the plant rather than penetrating deeply into the ground. However, other species have a taproot system, which has deeper, thicker, and bigger roots.
Cactus roots have two main purposes: to store food and water like the stems of succulent plants, and to absorb water and nutrients from the soil. Since cactus plants typically thrive in dry climates with little access to water, roots are crucial to their survival. Therefore, the roots system must remain robust for the plant to live. The plant doesn’t live very long if the roots are destroyed by a disease or an incest.
The following describes various root systems that cacti have:
Taproots
Many cacti immediately produce a long, powerful taproot following germination. A taproot supports a plant to prevent it from being washed away during storms and transports more moisture to the underground soil layers. Taproots are primarily found in the Copiapoa subgenre.
For instance, the Saguaro (Carnegiea gigantea) and Mexican Cereus (Pachycereus pringlei), both of which are enormous, tree-like cacti found in the Sonoran Desert.
Lateral Roots
Roots with the ability to repeatedly branch as they develop are known as lateral roots. Some cacti that lack tap roots rely on laterally growing roots to get food and water.
Succulent Roots
Some cacti have succulent roots that can store food and water in addition to their stems. Expanded roots, or succulent roots, can weigh anywhere between 5 and 60 pounds. The area of the root that enlarges is secondary wood or xylem tissue.
Aerial Roots
Aerial or accidental roots can be found in epiphytic cacti that grow between tree branches. Epiphytic cacti include night-blooming cereus (Hylocereus undatus) and orchid cacti (Epiphyllum sp.). The fleshy roots that protrude from the sides of the stems serve to secure the climbing cactus stems to the trees or rocks that provide support for the plant.
Do cacti prefer little pots?
Your cactus or succulent plant’s survival depends on the pot size and soil type you choose.

When they’re young, succulents and cacti can be kept in a dish garden. For a start, the common clay bonsai trays are excellent.
The plants can be moved into their own pots when they become too large. No matter the temperature—45°F or 85°F—the plants will remain the same size if you keep them dry. The plants will rot if you water them in cold weather or when they are dormant.
Avoid overpoting. Rotting roots are frequently caused by overpotting. Put the smaller pot into the larger pot and fill the area in between with gravel if the plant is top heavy. This will provide the plant with a sturdy foundation without putting it at risk of decay.
Pot Size
Cacti and other succulents should be potted in the smallest containers possible. Use a pot for cactus that is just big enough to accommodate the plant. Use a pot that is just a little bit bigger than the root ball for other succulents.
The drainage provided by the holes on the pot’s bottom is insufficient for some plants. Make the hole in a clay pot bigger by using a hammer and a screwdriver. For a plastic pot, use a hot knife or hot ice pick.
In either scenario, take care to avoid burning yourself or breaking the pot. If the clay pot does crack, save the fragments for your subsequent planting endeavor rather than throwing them away.
Soil
The potting material is less significant than excellent drainage. A thick layer of gravel or crumbled bricks should be put over the porous soil. More humus (organic matter) is preferred by spineless succulents in their potting soil.
We typically use the terms “heavy,” “organic,” and “light” to describe different types of soil. These definitions mean as follows:
Heavy. This is composed of clay, loam, or good garden soil with roughly one-third humus. It should contain roughly one-third washed builder’s sand or perlite where good drainage is necessary.
Organic. This is humus-rich soil, leaf mold (decomposed leaves), or some other organic material-rich soil. The drainage will be improved by using perlite or coarse builder’s sand.
Light. This describes a material with an open texture that has great drainage and can be kept damp but never wet. Plants that spend time in trees in the natural world benefit from it.
How to Pot
1. Choose a pot that is not excessively huge.
2. Fill the bottom with enough drainage material.
3. Insert your potting material into it until it is roughly one-third filled.
4. Check the plant’s size (make sure it won’t be too high above the pot’s top or too far down in the pot). Unless the plant prefers to move horizontally, in which case it should be placed at one edge, place the plant in the middle.
5. Fill all the crevices between the plant and the pot with your potting medium while holding the plant gently where you want it to stay.
6. Shake the pot to help the soil settle, then gently press the earth down around the roots. Add extra soil if there isn’t enough or if it starts to pack down. Older plants get more earth packed around them than seedlings do. So that there is room for water, leave a space between the top of the medium and the top of the pot.
7. Give the plant water.
Repotting
The process is essentially the same when working with plants that are already potted, with the exception that you must start by taking the plant out of pot 1.
Sometimes the plant can be readily removed, but other times it can be more difficult. Do not pull on the plant if it is stubbornly refusing to emerge from the pot. The container breaking can be preferable to the plant being damaged or having its top broken off.
How to Knock Out a Plant
If the plant is stuck in its pot, try gently tapping the pot against something hard, like wood or concrete, to see if you can squirm it out.
If it doesn’t work, try carefully slicing the inside of the pot with a knife to see if the plant will now emerge.
If that doesn’t work and the pot is made of clay, use your hammer to smash it with a few controlled strokes that won’t harm the plant.
Take part of the soil around the root ball out once the plant has been removed from the pot. Prune away a portion of the roots if they appear to be overgrown.
You can take a knife and simply chop off the outside of the root ball, including the roots, on some plants where the roots become extremely, extremely thick. If you wish to retain your plant in the same-sized container, you can also utilize this root pruning technique.
You can keep your plant “growing on” in the same container for years by first cutting some of the roots and then portion of the top.
How to Handle Spiny Plants
Handle prickly plants by wrapping them in a narrow band of newspaper. Using the band like a belt or harness, wrap it around the plant. For each plant, use a new band.
Gloves are uncomfortable to handle because the small spines break off inside the glove and the huge spines stab right through the glove.

Are the roots of succulents shallow?
Succulents actually thrive on inorganic soils like silt, clay, or sand. They don’t require a lot of soil because they have rather shallow root systems. Finally, despite the fact that many succulents are sold in tiny pots or containers, there is no need for concern.
