Your succulents are not immediately harmed by ants, but they may be a real pain. Ants in your succulent container are a sign that pests are attacking your succulents. These pests, like mealybugs, scales, and aphids, exude a material that resembles honey in the soil, which ants eat.
How can I prevent ants from eating my succulents?
To protect your other plants, take the first step of isolating the infected succulent. After that, carefully inspect your succulent to see if the ants are stealing food from other insects (aphids or mealybugs). Remember that you need to look closely because they frequently hide in the rosettes of succulents or the creases of leaves.
Step 2: To kill the ants and draw them away from the succulent, place a small, shallow dish of borax-based ant baits (or any food that comprises sugar and oil) close to the base of the succulent.
 
Step 3: After you’ve exterminated the majority of the ants, wash off any that are still on your succulents with a steady stream of water from a garden hose or by immersing the plant in a solution of 1 to 2 tablespoons insecticidal soap to 1 quart water. After that, gently brush off any ants you find on the leaves and stems of each plant.
It’s preferable to merely toss the old, infected soil during prepotting if the ant infestation has gotten out of hand. This will allow you to give the succulent plant new, fresh soil in addition to getting rid of all the ants from your succulents. Just remember to put rubber gloves before unpotting your succulents, and then use water to thoroughly wash the ants from the roots.  
It’s preferable to simply discard the old, infected soil by repotting if the ant infestation has gotten out of hand.
Step 4: Next, eliminate the succulent’s food source from the ants (aphids or mealybugs, and their honeydew). Spray the plant with 70% isopropyl alcohol to kill any aphids or mealybugs after first washing the plant with a soapy sponge to remove honeydew.

What’s consuming my succulent plants?
Examine the soil and the area around the pot to see whether birds are consuming your succulents. Do you notice any feces? Birds will produce little, rounded droppings. Small holes rather than large bitten portions are more likely to be found since birds like to eat succulent foliage.
It might have been a larger animal if there are more portions removed or if you observe chew marks. The larger rodents like voles, possums, mice, squirrels, and others can consume succulents. Even cats and dogs will occasionally eat succulents, but they frequently quit after only one bite. Make sure your succulents are not hazardous to dogs or cats if you have pets, and keep them out of their reach if you do. Succulents can also be harmed and eaten by smaller insects like snails and slugs.
But don’t assume that your succulents will only be damaged by birds and other animals. Small vermin can consume your succulents or at the very least sap their juices. These include, for instance, aphids. Aphids are tiny insects that are frequently colored green, black, or yellow. Spider mites are tiny and come in a variety of hues. Additionally, they absorb plant liquids. Succulents might suffer unfavorable effects from scale bugs as well. Succulents can also be harmed by slugs and snails.
Always be sure to inspect your succulents’ roots for damage, pests, and discolouration. You can use natural remedies to get rid of pests if your succulents are afflicted. Neem oil, horticultural mineral oils, and insecticidal soaps are a few examples.
Are ants bad for cacti?
There are few plant species that are more well-defended than cacti. This is accomplished by cacti by means of the release of nectar from specialized organs known as extrafloral nectaries.
Cacti are not the only plants that have extrafloral nectaries. They are produced by many different plant species, frequently for the same reasons. Ants enjoy sweet foods, and the more dependable the source, the more fiercely the ant colony will guard it. Cacti are peculiar in that they don’t seem to have chosen one specific extrafloral nectary kind that works best for them. In the cactus family, up to four different kinds of extrafloral nectaries have been identified.
Some cactus have highly modified spines that exude nectar. Genera including Coryphantha, Cylindropuntia, Echinocactus, Ferocactus, Opuntia, Sclerocactus, and Thelocactus provide a superb illustration of this. Such spines typically lack any resemblance to spines and are short and blunt. Other cacti produce nectar from spines that appear normal. This adaptation is strange because the anatomy of such spines does not appear to be unique in any way. Genera including Brasiliopuntia, Calymmanthium, Harrisia, Opuntia, Pereskiopsis, and Quiabentia are examples of this. Others produce nectar from leaves that have been drastically reduced and are located at the base of the spines (the areole). Acanthocereus, Leptocereus, Myrtillocactus, Pachycereus, and Stenocereus are among the species with such leaves documented. They are also difficult to identify as leaves. Most resemble very small scales. Finally, specialized areas of the stem tissue make up the fourth variety of extrafloral nectary. In genera like Armatocereus, Leptocereus, and Pachycereus, this has been discussed.
Wherever they originate, they serve essentially the same purpose. Ants are drawn to the nectar-like substance they release. Ant colonies will be increasingly aggressive in protecting this food source as it becomes more dependable. When it comes to little insect herbivores, this is a very helpful kind of defense. Spines can prevent larger herbivores, but they are ineffective against creatures that can easily pass through them undamaged. Ants also clean the cacti, possibly getting rid of bacteria and fungi that could be detrimental. Even though we are still only at the very beginning of our understanding of this cactus/ant mutualism, everything we have learned so far indicates that there is much more to this interaction than what I have just described.
For instance, the ants can be seeking anything other than sugar. Water may be an ant colony’s most scarce resource in dry desert settings, and big, succulent cactus operate as gigantic water tanks. Getting to that water is the key. A study that focused on the Arizona-dwelling Ferocactus acanthodes species of barrel cactus discovered that the amount of carbohydrates released by the extrafloral nectaries decreased as spring gives way to summer. The nectar gets much more watery as a result. Amazingly, despite the nectar being diluted during the summer, ant numbers on any particular barrel cactus actually rose. It makes sense that water, rather than sugar, is the true prize for colonies of ants hanging out on cacti in such scorching desert locations as ants are notoriously prone to desiccation.
Another intriguing finding regarding the cactus/ant mutualism is that it seems like the ants’ identities really do matter. Although resistance is the cactus’ greatest advantage, research indicates that the value of such defenses for cacti reaches a limit. Although anti-herbivore and cleaning services are initially beneficial to cacti, it has been discovered that particularly aggressive ant species might potentially scare off potential pollinators. According to at least one study, cactus managed by less aggressive ant species yield more fruits and those fruits contain noticeably more seeds than cacti handled by aggressive ant species. This is particularly worrisome when we consider the expanding problem of invasive ants. Some cactus species may be seriously threatened as non-native ant species replace native ant species.
Despite all the fascinating things we now know about extrafloral nectaries in the Cactaceae family, there are still a lot of unanswered questions. To begin with, we are yet unsure of the number of distinct species that produce them in one way or another. A closer look, especially at uncommon or little studied groups, is likely to show that extrafloral nectaries are produced by a far larger number of cacti. Additionally, we have very little knowledge about the anatomy of the many nectaries. What distinguishes them from one another and how do some of them, particularly those made from regular spines, truly work? The last question is whether these nectaries are useful all year round or if there is a seasonal trend to their growth. How does this alter the kinds of ants they draw, and how does that alter the cacti’s ability to survive and reproduce? Cacti are a charismatic collection of plants, yet there is still much we don’t know about them.
What is consuming my succulent plants indoors?

Repelling Ants
If ants aren’t a big issue in your garden, try to deter or repel them. This is how:
- Grow plants that have potent natural fragrances or volatile oils to deter ants. Some examples include peppermint and other mints, garlic, rhubarb, tansy, pennyroyal, and sweet fern. These plants are repulsive to ants.
- Acidic plant materials can discourage ants, such as lemon juice or spicy pepper sprays. Apply the mixture as a spray or drench where ants cluster by blending lemon, hot peppers, or garlic with water. The majority of the ants will move; a few will be killed. Black pepper, cayenne pepper, cinnamon, and chili powder are further ant deterrents.
- Ants are covered in a chemical compound called pheromones. Other ants can follow the track left by ant pheromones. Spraying the pheromone trail with soap and water, garlic and water, vinegar and water, or a peppermint and water mixture will break it up. It will confuse the ants.
- Look for and eliminate insects that secrete honeydew, such as aphids, scale, and mealybugs. These insects are raised by ants for the sugar-rich honeydew they produce. The ants will relocate if their food source vanishes. Maintaining a healthy garden will help you avoid weak or sick plants, which are preyed upon by aphids, scale, and mealybugs.
Killing Ants
Killing ants might be required if there is a severe ant infestation and the garden’s existence is in jeopardy. You should be aware that while harmful insects that get in the path will also be destroyed, the pest ants will not. Additionally, adjacent plants could suffer harm or even die. Be careful and cautious when using insecticides.
- Diatomaceous earth kills and repels ants. Crushed sea life fossils make up diatomaceous earth. Many of the practically minuscule diatomaceous earth fragments will slice through soft-bellied insects like ants, snails, and cockroaches. These insects die from dehydration as a result of the cuts. Put diatomaceous earth around ant nest entrances and on ant pathways.
- Water that is boiling will scald and kill ants. Directly into the ant nest’s entrance, pour hot water. It could take numerous applications of boiling water to completely remove an ant nest because they can be quite deep and are designed to shield the queen from flooding or rain. For several days in a succession, pour 3 litres of hot water into the nest every day. Each day, keep an eye on what goes on around the nest to see if this is working. When ants are most active in the middle of the morning, treating ant nests with boiling water is the best option. To get rid of the nest, you must kill the queen. Be warned that boiling water can hurt and even kill adjacent plants and beneficial insects.
- A naturally occurring substance called boric acid is utilized as a pesticide and insect repellent. If consumed in high numbers, boric acid—a stomach poison—is poisonous. Be aware that ingesting boric acid can cause harm to and death from both insects and animals (the severity of the harm varies on the amount consumed and the size of the bug or animal): Use bait stations that kids and dogs can’t get into to keep boric acid out of their reach. After handling boric acid, wash your hands and your gloves.
Boric acid ant bait can be made by combining 10 teaspoons (50 mL) of sugar and 2 cups (500 mL) of water with 1 teaspoon (5 mL) of powdered boric acid. Place cotton balls at a bait station close to an ant nest or along an ant trail after soaking them in this mixture. The bait will be consumed by worker ants who will then take it back to the nest and queen to feed them. A pet- and kid-proof bait station should contain cotton balls in a jar with a screw top, secure the lid with adhesive tape, and then make many holes in the top of the jar for ants to feed through.
Boric acid affects the ant’s stomach by causing dehydration. Ants cannot develop a resistance to boric acid.
The bait mix can be too potent if you discover a lot of dead ants close to the bait station. The mixture needs to be slow-acting so that worker ants can bring the bait back to the nest, where other colony members will eat it.
Ants can consume a boric acid-sugar mixture, but the bait station needs to be spill-proof to prevent pets and children from disturbing it or drinking from it.
Ants do switch from eating sugar to eating carbohydrates, so you can use boric acid and peanut butter in place of sugar. However, the bait station needs to be pet- and child-proof.
To evaluate your efforts, place sticky glue boards all around the nest or trail area. Your efforts were successful if only a few ants were caught in the traps.
Keep pets and children away from boric acid. Avoid getting boric acid in your eyes or nose, and wash your hands as well as your gloves after using it.
- For severe ant infestations, commercial ant baits containing abamectin can be utilized. An insecticide called abamectin is created in labs by naturally fermenting soil bacteria. Observe the instructions.
