Chop nopalitos and onions. In a sauce pan, combine water and chopped nopalitos. Boil for 20 minutes. Sauté onion in oil in a skillet until it becomes translucent. Add the cooked nopalitos and heat for one minute (optional: add red chile piquin along with nopalitos). Saute pan with lid on. Simmer nopalitos until they are soft and thoroughly heated. Use as a condiment or sauce. After cooling, put any remaining food in a container that can be sealed and store it in the fridge. In the refrigerator, this can be kept for up to two weeks without any problems.
