Although we are unaware of the first, we are aware of the best. The houseplant industry was launched when James Boodley and his team at Cornell University created Cornell Mix in the 1960s. The majority of horticultural mixes used today are based on the Cornell Mix recipe. It offers the weed-free, lightweight media that made it possible to produce any crop on a vast scale, not just food crops. Plant growth on a big scale became suddenly possible. Can you grow cacti in normal potting soil?
Yes, you can give your cactus plants either standard potting soil or African violet dirt. However, once more, avoid using these on their own as they contain an excessive amount of organic matter that retains moisture and can contain fertilizer additives that are not designed for slow-growing cacti. Instead, incorporate them as one component of your homemade cactus potting soil.
Before repotting succulents, should you water them?
Repotting a succulent is necessary if its roots are cramming the container or if it needs to grow larger for any other reason.
Early spring or early fall, just before their growing season begins, are the ideal times of year for repotting succulents.
Since they can only remain in a pot for two years before beginning to exhibit signs of potted fatigue, which can eventually result in root rot and other issues, repotting should always be done at least every two years.
Before being repotted, succulents need to be watered for a few days to allow them to dry out.
This is due to the fact that when you water them, they do absorb moisture, and that should give your succulents’ roots enough time to absorb all possible moisture before being replanted.
Additionally, it is important to do this to give them time to become used to their new pot and soil, which is a little bit drier than their previous environment.
Your succulents must dry out for a few days before you may clear the old soil from the roots with water while repotting them.

How frequently should succulents be watered indoors?

Succulents – can they thrive in garden soil?

Long-term dry spells can cause your soil to become hydrophobic, which means that watering won’t completely saturate the soil and the soil will lose its ability to hydrate. If you scratch the surface, the soil will be dust-dry and your plants won’t be receiving any water at all. The surface will look to be wet.
You can remedy this by rehydrating the dried-out soil and mulching the tops of your gardens. Succulents won’t be harmed by mulching.
If a succulent suddenly and mysteriously vanishes from its location, you might have a pest issue. Small succulents can be completely eaten away over night by large snails, slugs, and caterpillars. Succulents are also consumed by deer, possums, kangaroos, mice, and some birds (including chickens and ducks).
Succulents planted in pots with nothing but garden soil are unlikely to thrive and even risk dying, as was previously noted. Even while types with extreme hardiness, such Graptopetalum Paraguayense, can survive, we advise purchasing at least a basic potting mix. Succulent potting mix or high-quality, all-purpose well-draining mix ought to work if you want very beautiful plants in containers.
In conclusion, the vast majority of succulents will thrive when planted in regular garden soil, albeit if the soil is of low quality, they might not grow as quickly or fully. Succulents shouldn’t be grown in pots with nothing but garden soil, in our opinion.

Outdoor Gardening Soil is Too Heavy for Indoor Plants
If you compare potting mix and outdoor gardening soil side by side, they may appear to be identical, but the two types of soil perform differently. In particular, dirt weighs a lot more.
Large outdoor plants don’t mind heavier soil, but your indoor plants don’t like it as much. On itself will compact heavy soil.
The air pockets that were dispersed throughout the earth vanish when it becomes hard and inflexible.
Plants require air and water to survive, whether they are grown indoors or outdoors. Your houseplant doesn’t receive as much oxygen with reduced aeration.
Additionally, it will be much more difficult for the water you provide to the plant’s soil to reach the roots and nourish the plant. Even when you’re bottom watering, compacted soil can prevent water from getting to the roots.
Then, one of two things will occur:
- Before your roots can consume it, the water will evaporate in the soil.
- Water that can’t drain will get oversaturated at the roots.
Your plant will appear to be drowned if the water is draining before it reaches the roots in the first case and is causing symptoms like wilting, leaf yellowing, and a crunchy texture.
Your houseplant’s roots could start to rot if they are submerged in water, a condition known as root rot. The remainder of your plant will perish if the roots fail.
Your houseplant’s growth may be hampered by heavy soil, which can make it difficult for immature roots to spread out. It’s just a poor situation all around.
Outdoor Gardening Soil Retains Water for Too Long
When you use outside soil, there’s another thing that’s fighting against your indoor plants. Topsoil is renowned for its excellent water retention despite the soil compaction. If you grow plants like coleus, arrowhead plants, spider plants, Chinese evergreens, pothos, or philodendrons, is this really such a bad thing? No, obviously, as these plants are voracious drinkers.
Using topsoil is almost a death sentence for all of your other houseplants, which require water much less frequently. Your plant will likely get a severe case of root rot sooner rather than later.
I briefly mentioned root rot in the sentences above, but I’ll go into more depth about it now in case you need a refresher. Overwatering or other methods of leaving your plants in standing water (also known as water that doesn’t drain) can cause root rot.
When a plant is getting root rot, its roots start to turn black and become mushy instead of being white and firm like those of a healthy plant. Root rot-affected roots will also develop a distinctive odor that will indicate that something has died. In this instance, the indoor plant’s roots are attached.
Your plant’s leaves have since turned brown or yellow, at least initially. As root rot advances, the leaves could become black. Your plant’s leaves will wilt and possibly even fall off. Your plant is drowning, which will impede its growth.
Root rot is nearly a guarantee for your plant, even if you water it as frequently as you always do and there have never been any issues in the past because outdoor soil will naturally be moister.
Outdoor Gardening Soil Has Less Aeration
Vermiculite, perlite, and sphagnum moss are common components of indoor potting soils. Peat moss uses its ability to exchange cations to hold onto more nutrients.
Additionally, it can hold a lot of water relative to its weight. Vermiculite improves soil aeration and nutrient and water retention. Perlite makes the soil looser and more airy and reduces soil compaction.
Since topsoil lacks these components, it naturally has less air in it. Also keep in mind that the soil is more compacted outside for gardening. For indoor plants, that is not a good combination.
Think of donning a blouse that is a couple sizes too small. You’re having trouble breathing and sense a lot of pressure. When top soil or outdoor soil is pressed up on the roots of your indoor plant, it experiences something akin to that.
Your plant cannot perform aerobic respiration, which involves converting the plant sugars produced during photosynthesis into energy, if it lacks sufficient oxygen. Your plant stagnates when its energy reserves run low since it is unable to devote those reserves to new growth. Your plant can lose the ability to survive if the oxygen loss is particularly severe.
