In the spring and summer, when leaves and stems are ready for active growth, it is simplest to propagate succulent leaves and cuttings. Most common succulents can be multiplied successfully from individual leaves or stem fragments.
- For succulents with fleshy leaves, like jade plants or echeveria and sempervivum rosettes, leaf propagation works well. The leaf must remain intact for the root to take. To loosen the leaf, gently bounce it back and forth while holding it between your forefinger and thumb. After that, carefully separate the leaf from the parent plant, keeping the base in tact.
- Succulents with distinct stems, including stacked crassulas and spreading or erect sedums, respond well to stem cuttings. Cutting succulents is analogous to propagating soft-stemmed plants. To cut stem tips, use a sharp knife, or take an entire stem to make many starts. Each cutting should be 2 to 3 inches long and have multiple leaves. Only the top two leaves should be kept.
How long does it take a succulent leaf to grow a new succulent?
- Leaf propagation: Typically, it takes 2 weeks for roots to develop through leaf propagation. New leaves will start to form in around 8 weeks and can optionally be transplanted to a tiny container.
- Root formation typically takes 4 weeks, but it can occasionally take longer with stem proliferation.
- Offset propagation: Once the pups have developed a calloused skin, the roots typically begin to grow after 4 to 10 weeks.
- The process of propagating seeds takes the longest—cactus seeds can take anything from three weeks to a year to even begin to germinate. After that, the seedling takes a very long period to mature into a full-grown adult.
Can a leaf in water be used to develop a succulent?
In water, most succulents can be multiplied. If you have a succulent that is stretched out, you can take stem cuttings and root those, or you can create roots from healthy single leaves.
The most successful succulents are those with thick, meaty leaves, like the Echeveria plant. So when you first try your hand at succulent propagation, these are an excellent option.
It makes sense to multiply a few leaves at once. By doing this, you increase the likelihood that there will be survivors. While others may decay or just wilt and wither away, certain succulent leaves will only produce roots and no new plant.
How can you root succulents the quickest?
So, you may be wondering how to quickly propagate succulents. I can relate to both the joy and frustration of watching a new plant develop.
Since I’ve been growing succulents for a few years, allow me to give you some advice on how to quickly propagate your succulents as well as some alternative techniques you can try.
Stem cuttings are the simplest and quickest method of propagating succulents. If the plant is a fresh cutting from the mother plant, it will already have a strong foundation from which to build its new root system. Another instance is when you cut off the succulent’s top portion because it has been stretched out significantly (etiolation), this stem will likewise give rise to numerous new plantlings (pups). Due to its existing root system, the plant will also have a great possibility of producing more offset and growing quickly.
Always check that the stem cuttings are a respectable size for the plant’s typical size.
According to my experience, I always want to make sure that the succulent has a lot of nodes where the leaves attach to the stem and a lot of leaves in its stem. Once the succulent is put in soil, these stem nodes will form roots, and the leaves will serve as the succulent’s water source until its root system matures.
From which plants may leaf cuttings grow?
Components that offer the best aeration, drainage, and moisture retention properties make form a good propagation medium. Typically, these are constructed from mixtures of peat moss, perlite, vermiculite, sand, or other materials. A propagation medium’s main purpose is to offer the plant support and moisture while it is growing. Compared to a potting media, which may need to support a mature or growing plant for a lengthy time, these requirements are very different. Potting medium are generally not advised for use in plant propagation.
In water, many plants can easily take root. However, the roots that grow might be very stringy and fibrous. When transferred into a container, plants with water roots frequently struggle to take root.
Moisture:
Before use, the propagation medium needs to be properly hydrated. Peat moss is one organic substance that has a waxy outer layer that prevents it from getting wet. Apply the water slowly to ensure even distribution. It can take two or three applications. It is typical for a medium to appear wet on the outside while inside being powdery dry. Later, it will be simpler to cling cuttings to a well-moisturized medium.
Light:
In the environment, light is crucial for plant growth. Under general, plants root slowly in low light conditions. High light levels, however, can strain cuttings, causing them to burn or lose their leaves. In most cases, diffused sunlight offers sufficient illumination for ideal roots without endangering the cuttings.
Humidity:
Cuttings are unable to replenish the water lost through transpiration because they lack roots. To reduce the quantity of moisture lost to the atmosphere, it is crucial to maintain high humidity levels surrounding the cuttings.
By covering the propagation region with a clear plastic sheet, these circumstances can be created. On the underside of the plastic, condensation results from this, providing the essential humidity.
To prevent disease issues, adequate ventilation is also necessary. It is important to position the plastic covering so that air may freely circulate around the cuttings as they root.
Temperature:
Keep daytime temperatures around 70 degrees Fahrenheit for best results. When possible, supply bottom heat because the soil might be 10 to 20 degrees colder than the air throughout the winter. For the majority of plants, temperatures in the rootzone should be between 70 and 75 degrees F.
Rooting Hormones
Root development is frequently aided by rooting hormones. These substances add auxin, a hormone that occurs naturally in plants and is essential for root development. Before inserting the cutting into the propagation media, the basal end is dipped into the chemical. The sort of plant being propagated will affect the strength and type of these products.
Section and stem cuttings:
There are two different kinds of stem cuttings: section cuttings, which include a 2- to 3-inch segment of stem (not including the apex or plant tip) and leaf joint, and tip cuttings, which include the apex or plant tip plus a tiny portion of the stem.
Choose a portion of the stem that has a healthy crown of leaves at the end if you want to take a tip cutting. Remove the lower foliage with care, leaving a length of stem that is naked and ready to be inserted into the propagation medium. Rooting will be aided by bottom heat from a heating cable. The ideal media temperature for cuttings is typically around 75 degrees F.
Growing Plants from Stem Cuttings:

Plant Rooting in Water
Some plants can be started in normal tap water because stem or tip cuttings from them root so easily. For maximum effects, the water needs to be kept clear and well-aerated. Best in a well-lit area away from direct sunshine. Plants should be moved into individual pots or grouped together in a hanging basket once their roots have grown. One of the simplest plants to root in plain water are the ones listed below:

Many plants with soft, fleshy foliage have the capacity to create new leaves in order to reproduce. You may understand the proliferation potential for these species when you consider that some plants can produce hundreds of leaves. Additionally, leaf propagation is both quicker and more dependable than plant seedling germination.
The most common way to take a leaf cutting is to snip off a healthy leaf along with a small portion of the stalk. The stalk of the leaf cutting is then inserted into a moist propagation medium after being bathed in a rooting hormone. If at all possible, bottom heat of roughly 75 degrees F should be provided. By frequently misting the propagation tray with water or by covering it with clear plastic, adequate humidity levels are kept.
The leaves should be well-rooted and a new plant should be growing at the base after around two or three weeks. These new plantlets that grow around the stem are what are transplanted. You can throw away the outdated leaf.
African violets and Sansevieria are two plants that root most easily from leaf cuttings.
African violet leaf cuttings root so easily that they can just be suspended in a jar of well-aerated water. The mouth of a jar can be simply covered with foil or paper and secured in place with a rubber band to support the dangling leaves. This covering is easily penetrated using holes, and leaf stems are inserted such that the bottom of each stalk reaches the water.
Another intriguing plant that may be propagated from leaf cuttings is the sansevieria. Long, leathery, and sword-shaped are the leaves. Simply choose a leaf in its entirety and cut it into 2-inch parts, working your way down from the tip. Keep in mind that cuttings placed upside down will not take root.
Leaf cuttings may grow so close together that they are practically shoulder to shoulder. They won’t be harmed by the crowding, and after their root systems have grown, they can be divided for transplantation into separate pots.
Leaf Cutting-Propagated Plants:
The following plants can successfully be reproduced from leaf cuttings:
- Black violet
- Rex begonia
- Cactus (particularly varieties producing “pads like Bunnies Ears)
- Crassula (Jade Plant)
- Kalanchoe
- Peperomia
- Sansevieria
- Sedum
Cuttings from leaf veins:
There are two techniques to grow plants from leaf-vein cuttings that have noticeable leaf veins:
- An entire leaf can be divided into pieces, each of which has a vein. With the leaf portion standing up to root like a leaf cutting, the bottom portion of the vein can then be forced into the propagation media. In this way, a single leaf can result in up to 12 new plants.
- Slash the veins on the underside of a huge leaf at intervals of 1 to 2 inches. To maintain the leaf in contact with the soil, place the underside of the leaf in contact with the propagation medium and weight it down. Every time a leaf is cut, a new plant will emerge.
Can succulent leaves be recycled?
But did you know that cuttings and fallen leaves may also be used to generate new succulent plants? Indeed, you can! It’s simple. You only need to follow a few simple instructions, and after a few weeks, you will have a ton of adorable baby succulents!
How long does it take for succulent leaves to root?
It is strongly advised to propagate your cuttings in water in a glass jar or another transparent container because doing so will allow you to see the growth of your plant and will also allow light to pass through.
Arrange it.
Once the cutting callus has healed, add water to the jar and place the object inside. While some opt to immerse it in water, we recommend that the stem and leaves remain dry to reduce the risk of rotting.
We advise covering the jar with plastic wrap and making a hole in it so you may insert the stem if the succulent cutting is too small. By doing this, you’ll be able to balance your cutting on the jar’s rim and make sure that only the stem’s bottom touches the liquid.  
After submerging the cutting, put the jar in a sunny spot or window and be patient while waiting for new roots to grow.
Grow period.
The time it takes for roots to emerge can typically range from 2 to 6 weeks, depending on your habitat and climate. It is advised that you periodically check the jar to make sure the water hasn’t dried up in order to avoid delays.
Can succulent cuttings be planted directly in the ground?
What is there to love other than a succulent? Obviously, a full garden of succulents! Fortunately for us, it’s simple to propagate a variety of these resilient, vibrant plants at home. We can’t wait to see succulents growing all year long in containers around the house and garden; there are various easy ways to reproduce them.
Propagating by Division: Plants that have gotten too leggy perform best with this method, which produces new succulents from cuttings. Start by delicately removing any leaves that may be attached to the stem below the rosette; be sure to preserve the leaf’s base while you do so. After all the leaves have been eliminated, cut the rosette with shears, leaving a brief stem intact. The cuttings should be let to dry in an empty tray for a few days until the raw ends have calloused. The cuttings can then be rooted in either water or soil.
Soil: After the stems have calloused, set the cuttings on top of a shallow tray filled with well-draining cactus/succulent soil. From the base of the cuttings, roots and little plants will start to emerge in a few weeks. Once the roots start to show, water sparingly once a week; take care not to overwater. The parent leaf will eventually wither; carefully remove it while taking care not to harm the young roots. Your propagated succulents can be replanted once they have established roots. As soon as the plants are established, keep them out of direct sunlight.
Water: After the stem has calloused, place a cutting with the end barely visible above the water’s surface on the lip of a glass or jar filled with water. Pick a sunny location for your glass. The incision will eventually produce roots that extend toward the water. Once roots have sprouted, your new succulent can either be replanted in succulent potting soil or allowed to remain submerged in water as illustrated above.
Offsets are little plants that develop at the base of the main specimen, and many species of succulents, such as aloe, hens and chicks, and some cacti, will generate them. Check for root growth after an offset has developed for two to three weeks before carefully twisting, cutting, or using a sharp knife to separate it from the main stem. Be cautious to prevent destroying any already-formed roots. Follow the directions above for propagating in soil or water, letting the offsets dry, establish roots, and then repot when they have had time to callus any exposed regions. Removing offsets has the added benefit of enhancing the health of your current succulents and redirecting energy into the growth of the primary plant.
