Duckweed, cactus, enormous redwood trees, ferns, conifers, blooming plants, etc. are a few examples of vascular plants.
A succulent is what kind of plant?

Matt Ogburn, a former graduate student at Brown University and current postdoctoral scholar at Yale, claims that there must be some sort of tradeoff in a fat leaf that’s significantly different from most flat leaves.
“Storing water in the leaf offers an advantage, but it comes at a price in terms of the other tasks the leaf must perform.
Ogburn and Erika Edwards, an assistant professor of biology at Brown, combed through the catalogs of two families of dry-climate plants, the Molluginaceae and Portulacineae, for a recent study that was published in the journal Current Biology. Then examined the water storage capacity of 83 species and the vein structure of 42 species, and they put together the evolutionary history of the plants.
The planar vein structure of flat leaves was conserved in leaves up to a particular thickness. Their path lengths were longer and their vein structure was sparser as a result, but only to a certain extent.
The single plane arrangement of flatter leaves is abandoned in favor of either an oval or circular orientation in cross-section as the vein structure develops to become 3D after reaching a particular thickness threshold.
It shows that the varied vein shape is not an accident because 3D vein structures might independently develop more than ten times, in two different directions, in this small sample of two lineages. Instead, it appears to be unmistakably a functional characteristic that developed to allow leaves to thicken.
You might conclude that 3D venation simply arose once in the distant past and had nothing to do with succulence if you only had a collection of species with 2D veins and a collection of species with 3D veins, according to Edwards.
The more times you observe this recurring link between these two features, the more evidence you have that this is genuinely adaptive, but when you can lay them out on a phylogeny and reconstruct how many times this shift happened.
It is possible that 2D layouts of veins put a strict restriction on leaf thickness since they result in a low density of veins in thicker leaves. They were able to overcome those limitations through the evolution of 3D veins.
The researchers state in their report that “increased leaf thickness (when veins are planar) undermines the hydraulic benefits of dense leaf venation.”
The minimal functional vein density is also predicted to establish a maximum limit on leaf thickness.
“However, continued evolution of 3D venation permitted succulence to increase while keeping hydraulic path lengths at a manageable level.
