The majority of succulents are angiosperms, but there are some that are not, so the real answer to the question of whether or not a succulent is an angiosperm is both yes and no.
Angiosperm plants—many succulents have flowers and generate seeds, but not all—bear seeds inside their fruits.
Let’s explore the definitions of angiosperms and succulents to delve a little deeper.
What category do succulents fall under?
Succulent plants are by definition drought-resistant plants with extra-fleshy leaves, stems, or roots due to the growth of water-storing tissue.
[4] According to another source, a plant with thick, meaty, and swollen stems and/or leaves that is adapted to dry settings does not include roots.
[5] The distinction has an impact on how succulents and “geophytes”—plants that endure bad seasons as resting buds on a subterranean organ—relate to one another.
[6] The underground organs, including bulbs, corms, and tubers, are frequently fleshy and contain tissues that store water. Therefore, many geophytes would fall under the category of succulents if roots were included in the definition. Xerophytes are plants that have evolved to survive in dry conditions, such as succulents. Not all xerophytes, however, have succulent leaves because there are various methods to adapt to a lack of water, such as by growing little leaves that can roll up or by having leathery leaves instead of succulent ones. [7] Additionally, not all succulents are xerophytes; for example, Crassula helmsii is a plant that is both aquatic and succulent. [8]
Succulent hobby growers might use the term differently than botanists do. The term “succulent” is frequently used in horticulture to exclude cactus. Cacti are not included in Jacobsen’s three volume Handbook of Succulent Plants, for instance. [9] Cacti and succulents are frequently used as the title of books that discuss how to grow these plants. [10] [11] [12] Cacti are, nonetheless, classified as succulents in botanical terminology,[4] but many succulent plants are not cacti. Cacti are the only plants with real spines, and they exclusively exist in the New World (the Americas). The fact that plant families can contain both succulent and non-succulent species makes generic identification more challenging. There is a distinct progression in many genera and families from plants with thin leaves and regular stalks to those with very visibly swollen and fleshy leaves or stems. When separating plants into genera and families, the succulent characteristic is irrelevant. The same species may be categorized differently by different sources. [13]
Horticulturists frequently adhere to commercial traditions and may omit other plant species, including bromeliads, which are scientifically categorized as succulents.
[14] Without taking into account scientific classifications, a practical definition of horticulture has evolved into “a succulent plant is any desert plant that a succulent plant collector chooses to grow.” [15] Customers will typically recognize “succulent” plants in commercial presentations of them. When plants are marketed as “succulents” (such as hen and chicks), geophytes, in which the swollen storage organ is entirely underground, are less frequently included. Instead, plants with caudexes,[16] which are swollen above-ground organs at soil level that are formed from a stem, a root, or both, are. [6]
Succulents are either monocots or dicots.
The fleshiness of a succulent’s stem, leaves, or roots serves as a defining characteristic. They have evolved this feature through time to store moisture and endure in dry circumstances. Regardless of their other traits, such as how they reproduce, this is true. In order to distinguish between dicots and monocots, each has two embryonic leaves. Due to the evolution of species within both families, succulents can be either monocots or dicots.
Succulents: a type of flower?
Is it possible to get succulents to bloom? No and yes. Age of the plant is a factor. It might not be substantial or developed enough to prepare for reproduction (which is the point of flowers). But if a succulent is just sitting there, pouting, with no apparent reason not to produce a treasured flower spikeif it’s the right season, there IS something you can do to make it bloom. While most succulents flower in the spring and summer, others (like aloes and crassulas) do so in the middle of the year.
So here is the trick: The majority of plants, including succulents, require light to blossom. Photosynthesis, which generates energy and powers new growth, depends on sunlight. All living things, including plants, want to reproduce. For plants, this means having the strength to bloom. Succulents need a lot of light because they are typically native to hot, arid areas.
This aloe would remark, “If I could communicate,” “I’m in dire need of light! Maybe I won’t be able to blossom! Help!

And here, in full sun with little water, the leaves of a comparable species have shrunk to lessen evaporation. (Observe how much longer those are in the first picture.) It has become even more red, which suggests that sun exposure was perhaps not the best. This is referred to in horticulture as “Stress is visually pleasing because it brings out the best in color and symmetry. Look closely: It’s in bud! This plant may be under a little too much stress—the leaf tips are burnt, and growth has stalled.

Aloe maculata facts It was once known as Aloe saponaria (soap aloe) because the gel in its leaves lathered like soap. It is one of the few succulents that may become invasive because its roots can grow horizontally a few inches beneath the soil’s surface and sprout new plants. From their mother, baby plants can sprout up as far as three feet! Because I adore the blossoms, which are branching rather than the columnar spikes of many other aloes, I have a colony of Aloe maculata in a rocky region of the garden where they can’t create issue. Nevertheless, because the cut stems exude a mucilaginous gel, they are poor choices for cut flowers. Aloe maculata is a common passalong plant, thus there isn’t much demand for it at nurseries in Southern California. Aloe striata is a related aloe that behaves better, doesn’t have teeth, is frequently marketed in nurseries, and is considerably more desired in cultivation (coral aloe).
