If the enormous, multi-branched Saguaro cactuses (Carnegiea gigantea), which are commonly depicted in cowboy movies, are the first plants that come to mind when you hear the word “cactus,” you should know that there are over 2,000 additional species of cactus.

Nearly 200 species of Opuntia, which are found from the Canadian provinces of British Columbia and Alberta to the southernmost tip of South America, are among the most fascinating and diverse members of this family. They thrive on the sides of mountains, in deserts, and near beaches.

Prickly pear Opuntia is the most prevalent native cactus in Florida, which is appropriate (O. humifusa). The flattened stems and branches (pads) of this prickly, typically sprawling plant that may grow up to 3 feet tall with stunning yellow blossoms in the spring and eye-catching pink or scarlet fruit in the fall. Interestingly, while many Opuntias have branches that resemble pads, many others grow stems and branches that are cylindrical.

Bunny ear (O. microdasys) and brilliant prickly pear are two more little Opuntias that are both yellow-blossomed and native to Northern Mexico (O. rufida). Due to their richly textured and colorful pads, these cold-hardy exotics are more beautiful than our native Opuntia; their spinelessness is also very important to gardeners. Bunny ear’s pads are light green and yellow, while the pads of the dazzling prickly pear are reddish-brown and gray-green. These adorable small specimens of cacti can be grown for years on sunny windowsills before being transferred to larger containers or to sunny, well-drained places in the garden.

Opuntia ficus-indica, a shrubby, mostly spineless plant that can occasionally reach a height of 16 feet, is significantly larger. This tropical American plant, sometimes called as “tuna,” is so commonly cultivated for its mouthwatering fruit that it comes in a number of recognized variants.

Among Opuntias with cylindric stems, O. subulata from Peru is frequently offered. This medium-green, red-flowered species, which grows up to 12 feet tall in nature, has a stiff, shrub-like habit and lateral, horn-shaped shoots. It makes for an interesting conversation starter.

However, the 20-inch-tall Opuntia tunicata will delight you if you love fierce plants. It is a cactus with a cylindrical stem that generates a staggering amount of threatening, intertwined spines that shield the entire plant. Its numerous yellow blooms and long, red-tinged spines that turn yellow with age make it an attractive yet hands-off collector’s item.

Are there native succulents in Florida?

The tallest Yucca is the exotic gigantic or spineless Yucca, Yucca gigantea, a frost-tender tropical Yucca originated from cold zones 912 in Central America and southeastern Mexico. It is a common south Florida garden ornamental. In my chilly zone 9a sandhills garden, I have a gigantea specimen that needs protection from sporadic winter freezes and frosts. The majority of Yuccas have strong, sword-like leaves that typically have a pointed tip. Giant Yucca grows up to 30 feet tall and has soft, safe tips.

The three Yucca species native to Florida—Y. aloifolia, Y. filimentosa, and Y. gloriosa—are adaptive indigenous that are salt, frost, and drought tolerant and don’t have any major pest or disease issues. Once established, they don’t require more irrigation, pesticides, or fertilizer because they developed on sandy soils. All three bloom locally in late April or early May. Numerous native plant nurseries sell them.

Stemless Zones 7b10 Yucca filamentosa grows as a 3 to 4 foot wide shrub from a circular basal rosette of 1- to 2-foot long leaves. It produces a solitary, up to 15-foot-tall inflorescence in the spring. White, aromatic flowers are in bloom. Evergreen filamentosa has a slow growth rate and can produce a colony of plants that emerge from the parent plant’s underground runners. Sharp-tipped, simple, and alternating leaves with edges that tear into white filaments. There are parallel veins. Under tall pines and overgrown oaks, it thrives in sandy soil with full sun to partial shade. Install new plants 3 to 4 feet apart since individual plants require space. Put natural pine needles or leaf litter on the ground between the plants as a mulch. The host plant for two Florida butterfly caterpillars is Y. filamentosa.

Spanish bayonet, or Y. aloifolia, is a tall, clump-forming plant that grows everywhere from subtropical 11 to subfreezing zone 6 south. Its alternately arranged, evergreen, dark green, stiff, dagger-like 12 to 18 inch long leaves are arranged along thick, upright and/or inclining trunks. A multi-stemmed plant’s trunks can reach heights of 10 to 15 feet, rising above the foliage with flower spikes. In the spring or summer, a spike of brilliant white blooms emerges from the stem tips. The pointed terminal leaf tips can be removed by gardeners. Use as a striking accent plant in a buffer screen for privacy and wildlife. The simple, rigid, sharp-pointed, coarse-textured, bayonet-shaped leaves have serrated and rough leaf edges. Seed, suckers, and stem cuttings are all methods of propagation. This hardy Yucca requires space, no irrigation, and sufficient air circulation but can withstand full sun to full shade, salty air, frost, and drought. It draws pollinators like bees and moths and serves as a host plant for butterfly caterpillars.

Spanish dagger, Y. gloriosa, is hardy from zone 611; its coarse, blue-gray to green leaves have smooth borders, and the outer ends frequently bend downward. As they wilt, its fragrant white blossoms take on a scarlet tint. A few native plant nurseries in Florida grow it. Up to 6 to 8 feet tall and with multi-stemmed clumps that are 4 to 8 feet in diameter, it grows slower and shorter than Y. aloifolia.

This is made possible by their large but shallow root systems, which swiftly absorb any water that reaches the ground surface. Because cactus stems are frequently ribbed or fluted, they can easily stretch and contract to quickly absorb water after rain and then hold onto it during protracted droughts. The majority of cacti use a unique process called “crassulacean acid metabolism” (CAM) as part of photosynthesis, similar to other succulent plants. Unlike photosynthesis, which occurs during the day, transpiration—during which carbon dioxide enters the plant and water escapes—occurs at night. Plants belonging to the genera Leuenbergeria, Rhodocactus, and Pereskia resemble nearby trees and bushes, at least on the surface. They have enduring leaves and, as they age, stems covered with bark. Despite their appearance, they are recognized as cacti by their areoles and have numerous water-saving adaptations. Leuenbergeria is thought to be very closely related to the original species from which all cacti descended. Other cacti develop as forest climbers and epiphytes in tropical areas (plants that grow on trees). Their stems often have fewer or even no spines and are flattened, almost leaf-like in appearance, like the well-known Christmas or Thanksgiving cactus (in the genus Schlumbergera).

Many types of cacti are produced as beautiful plants, while others are raised for fodder or forage, and yet others are utilized as food (particularly their fruit). An bug that lives on some cactus produces cochineal.

Many succulent plants, both in the Old and New Worlds, have spiky stems, including some members of the Euphorbiaceae (euphorbias), which is why they are frequently mistakenly called “cactus.”
