Are Cactus Hollow

Cacti have numerous adaptations that enable them to survive in arid climates; these adaptations enable the plant to efficiently gather water, store it for a long time, and conserve it (minimizing water loss from evaporation).

Cacti have thick, succulent stems with rigid walls that store water when it rains. The stems are fleshy, green, and photosynthetic. Either the stem’s inside is spongey or hollow (depending on the cactus). The water inside the cactus is prevented from evaporating by a thick, waxy layer.

Long, fibrous roots are common in cactus, and these roots take moisture from the earth. Some cacti, such as ball cacti, have smaller, more compact roots that can capture dew that falls from the cactus.

Most cacti feature scales or spines in place of leaves (which are modified leaves). These scales and spines do not evaporate their water (unlike regular leaves, which lose a lot of water). Predators (animals that would like to consume the cactus to gain food and/or water) are kept at bay by the spines. On a cactus, areoles are a circular collection of spines. An areole is where flowers bud, and it is also where new stems branch.

How come my cactus is hollow?

What then is “rot?” Rot is a fungus or bacteria that, under the correct circumstances, attacks the plant. I’m certain that in this case it was too damp and too cold, and rot set in. By the time I found it, it was hollow and fossilized. Since I don’t water them frequently, I didn’t notice it because it was covered behind another plant. I opened it up for you to look inside. Can a hollow cactus be saved?

While skin-deep disorders in the upper body of the cactus can be easily handled, those that have spread to the roots typically result in a plant that is slowly dying. Excision of the diseased tissue works successfully for the majority of cacti. Dig out the damaged flesh with a clean, sharp knife, then let the hole dry out. When the wound is healing, avoid overhead watering.

There is not much you can do if the roots have been affected by the harm. You could attempt to repot the plant by removing the unhealthy soil and adding sterile soil in its place. Before replotting the roots in a new potting medium, thoroughly wash the roots out.

Taking cuttings and allowing them to grow roots for a brand-new plant is another way to salvage a mushy, soft cactus. Before inserting the cutting into the sand, let it a few days to callus over. The cutting may need to be rooted for several weeks. A healthy cactus that looks exactly like the parent plant will be created using this method of propagation.

What is the name of the cactus’s core?

A perennial plant is a cactus. Their cylindrical or flattened stalks are covered in meat or succulents. The photosynthetic, green stems typically serve this purpose instead of the leaves, which are typically much diminished in number or entirely nonexistent in most adult cacti. Sharp bristles and spines that cover the majority of cactus species provide excellent protection and discourage most herbivores.

Cactus plants feature multiple surface areoles, which are cushion- or pit-like structures from which clusters of spines typically emerge. Areoles are typically understood in terms of developmental biology as axillary stem branches that are still in the process of developing. In reality, the spines are modified leaves. Additional defenses for the areoles include hook-like barbs called glochidia. Cacti have shallow, potentially widely dispersed soil roots.

Cacti typically have complete (bisexual) flowers that have both male reproductive organs (stamens) and female parts (a pistil). Although numerous distinct flowers may be present on a cactus at once, the flowers usually appear alone rather than in clusters. Most cacti species have huge, beautiful flowers that can be white, red, pink, orange, or yellow but seldom blue. The multiple petals and the sepal-like calyx combine to form an attractive, frequently fragrant flower that produces nectar and attracts pollinators including hawkmoths, bees, bats, and birds, particularly hummingbirds and tiny doves. The fruit is a berry with many seeds.

Cacti are xerophytic plants, which means they have evolved physiologically and morphologically to survive in extremely dry environments like deserts. The following characteristics of cacti make them suitable for xerophytic environments: (1) their succulent, water-retentive stems; (2) a thick, waxy cuticle and few or no leaves to significantly reduce water losses through transpiration; (3) stems that are photosynthetic, so leaves are not necessary to carry out this function; (4) stems that are cylindrical or spherical in shape, which lowers the surface to volume ratio and aids in moisture preservation; and, finally, (8) a periodic pattern of growth, productivity, and flowering that takes advantage of the moisture availability during the brief rainy season, while the plant remains dormant at drier times of the year. (5) tolerance of high tissue temperatures; (6) protection of the biomass and moisture reserves from herbivores by an armament of stout spines; (7) a physiological tolerance of long periods of drought; and (8) tolerance to high tissue temperatures.

As part of their so-called crassulacean-acid metabolism, cacti only absorb atmospheric carbon dioxide at night when their stomates are open. When the sun is shining during the day, the carbon dioxide is fixed into four-carbon organic acids and can then be released within the plant to be converted into sugars by photosynthesis. The crassulacean-acid metabolism, which enables stomates to remain tightly closed during the day, is an effective method of water conservation in arid settings.

Despite not being related to cactus, some dryland plant species look very similar to one another (at least, apart from their flowers and fruits, which are always distinctive among plant families). Convergent evolution—the similar evolutionary growth of unrelated species or families under similar types of environmental selective pressures—is what led to this. Non-botanists frequently mistake some species of spurges (family Euphorbiaceae) that grow in arid environments for cactus, despite the fact that they are actually relatively unrelated.

Is the inside of a cactus soft?

That indicates that the plant gets floppy and squishy when exposed to excessive dampness.

There are a few things you can try to remedy a mushy cactus and reasons why this can be the case.

Here are some of the most typical reasons why your cactus could become soft and squishy, along with solutions.

Overwatering

Overwatering is one of the most frequent causes of a cactus becoming squishy.

Desert plants like cacti don’t require a lot of water to survive. A surplus of water can be fatal.

In order to thrive in arid regions, cactus plants, like the majority of succulents, store water in their leaves and stems.

When a plant receives too much water, it can’t absorb it all, and the extra moisture makes the cactus floppy and soft.

Is the soil in cacti airy?

Different kinds of cactus will require a particular medium or type of soil to flourish in. The medium will be similar, but the soil mixtures for desert, epiphytic, lithophytic, and other cacti will change slightly.

Cacti require a particular soil composition and texture in addition to particular soil components. Having said that, cactus soil needs to be light and loose, especially when moist. Cacti soil has to have adequate airflow and drainage. Additionally, the soil mixture should thoroughly rehydrate after soaking in water.

Additionally, the majority of desert cacti naturally grow in low-nitrogen soil. Your cactus may grow very quickly if there is too much nitrogen in the growing media, which can weaken the spines and cause the stem to stretch. Manure must not be present in the soil of cactus because it will encourage the growth of fungus that the roots of cacti cannot control. Additionally, avoid giving cactus any organic fertilizers (except for epiphytic cacti).

Importance of pH levels in cacti soil

For growth and success, almost all cactus require an acidic soil. Different cactus species require different levels of soil acidity. Generally speaking, the pH range for the cacti soil mix should be between 5 and 6. Button cacti, or members of the Epithelantha genus, may thrive in soil mixtures with pH values as high as 6.5.

However, in general, cactus will die in any soil mixture with a pH of less than 4 and greater than 7–7.5. This particular soil mixture is inappropriate. If the pH levels in your soil mixture are too high, you can reduce them by adding some peat.

But keep in mind that different varieties of peat have varying levels of acidity, so you’ll need to add it gradually, mix, and check again.

What does a cactus that is rotting look like?

Regrettably, rot is a typical issue with cacti. It’s important to recognize that rot is a fungal or bacterial disease and will likely continue to develop unless something is done. While environmental factors are involved (rot is most common when the plant is overwatered, growing under conditions of high atmospheric humidity, when the stem has been wounded, after an insect infestation, etc.), it’s important to understand that the rot itself is a disease.

From the roots to the tip of the plant, rot can develop. However, crown rot—which starts where the stem meets the soil—is perhaps the most typical. Look for moist, somewhat depressed, black or dark tissue that is often surrounded by light green or yellow growth. Given that it occurs underground, root rot is the most challenging to find. It frequently manifests itself first when the plant’s entire top starts to yellow and sag.

Over time, many cacti develop a corky and brown base, which is typical for certain species. Try sticking a gloved finger into the plant’s base. It is not rot if the brown portion is hard. Soft rot will exist.

Cacti frequently self-heal in the wild, compartmentalizing the wound with callus tissue to prevent it from spreading. As a result of the lower light and higher humidity that are invariably present inside, that is not nearly as common. Furthermore, even if the rot stops spreading, the damaged area will always detract from the beauty of your plant. Major surgery is advised as a result. Thankfully, you don’t need years of medical school to perform this.

Sterility is essential in the operating room, as any surgeon will tell you. The same is true with cactus surgery. Always maintain your cutting instruments (knife, pruning shears, even saw [for particularly thick stems]) hygienic by washing them down with rubbing alcohol before cutting and between each cut during the subsequent operations.

Use a sharp knife or pruning shears to quickly cut off and discard the top portion of the plant when rot appears aboveground, close to the tip or in the middle of the stem. Make sure there are no signs of rot by inspecting the wound on the lowest half of the stem (dark, spreading tissue or even just an orange discoloration). If so, make another, lower cut until you can see that the remaining tissue is sound.

Though less crucial than with root or crown rot, you might want to apply powdered sulfur to the wound.

One or more new stems will begin to form right below the cut as the cut calluses over with time. You get to choose whether you want to maintain a few stems or just one. If you provide the plant with the proper growing circumstances, the plant will eventually fully recover.

You’ll need to perform more extensive surgery when the roots or the stem’s base exhibit signs of decay. The plant must be severed from its stem and its top rerooted. Only if the top portion is still wholesome and green will this be effective. I’d advise arranging a small cactus funeral service if it’s already yellowing or getting soft before buying a new one.

Cut off the plant’s top above the wound with a knife or pruning shears, if the top is healthy. Throw away the bottom portion. If you choose to preserve the pot, be sure to completely empty and clean it before reusing it to get rid of any disease spores.

Look at the wound. The tissue is it healthy? Lay the cutting on its side and take off another portion as you would a carrot if you detect the tiniest hint of brown or orange inside. Repeat as necessary until you have a section free of rot. Occasionally you’ll discover that the rot has permeated the entire plant, in which case it’s game over, but typically you quickly reach healthy tissue.

Apply sulfur powder to the wound (it’s a natural fungicide) once you’re confident that you’ve removed all of the rot and pre-rot (orange tissue).

For thin-stemmed cacti, callus production can take as little as a week or as long as three months. If callusing will take just a few weeks, you can simply lay the stem on its side. The stem tip will start to grow upward from its prone position if the cutting is likely to endure a few months, damaging the cutting’s future symmetry. If so, either stand the cutting upright or rotate the prostrate stem a quarter turn each week to prevent it from recognizing which way is up.

When callusing is finished and the cut surface is entirely dry and hard, put the cutting into dry potting soil, preferably using a cactus mix. Do not water immediately! In dry soil, let the new plant a few weeks to establish roots. Start watering sparingly after that. You can start watering normally after you notice some healthy new growth.

When rot develops on a stem of a clumping cactus, the disease can sometimes be treated by simply removing the one or two affected stems.

But division might be the best option if it turns out to be root or crown rot that only affects one side of the plant. Pull the cluster apart, keeping only the healthy stems, and remove the plant from its container. They’ll likely already have roots, in which case you may simply pot them up. Delay watering for a week or two, though.

Consider stems to be cuttings if they have not yet rooted. After cleaning them off, leave them to dry in the open air for a few weeks before potting them. As mentioned above, don’t water them at first, and when you notice fresh growth, start watering normally.
