According to a global research, overharvesting and illegal trade in the plants have put about one-third of the world’s cactus species in danger.
Concern was expressed by environmentalists who said that the threat to cacti was far higher than previously believed.
Because they serve as a source of food and water for numerous species, plants are an essential part of dry environments.
The International Union for Conservation of Nature’s evaluation findings are published in the Nature Plants publication.
The study found that human activities, including illegal trade, cultivation, aquaculture, and changes in land use, was putting pressure on 31% of the world’s 1,480 cactus species.
Lead author and co-chair of the IUCN’s Cactus and Succulent Plant Specialist Group Barbara Goettsch remarked, “The results of this evaluation come as a shock to us.
“We did not anticipate that cactus would be so seriously challenged and that illegal trading would be such a significant factor in their deterioration.”
According to the study, 47 percent of vulnerable species were impacted by the illegal trafficking in live plants and seeds for the horticulture sector and private collections as well as their unsustainable harvesting.
With the exception of one species that is native to southern Africa and South Asia, these plants are native to North and South America. They have developed to survive the extreme conditions prevalent in dry regions.
Cacti have been intentionally or unintentionally introduced to these environments, despite the fact that they are common sights in other places like Europe and Australia.
For their beautiful flowers, several species are highly prized by collectors, and half of the species are utilized for food or medicine.
The cactus group is essential to maintaining arid ecosystems because it can thrive in environments with limited flora that can endure the extreme heat or drought.
Deer, coyotes, lizards, and tortoises are just a few of the species that use cactus as food and water sources. In exchange, the animals assist in dispersing the seeds of the plants.
The distribution range is typically relatively small since they tend to appear in very specific locations, she said.
Additionally, because of their slow growth, they are particularly prone to perturbation.
Extending protected area networks, according to Dr. Goettsch, would “certainly assist the species” because many threatened species are found outside of protected areas.
The unlawful traffic in cacti would be reduced, she continued, if international agreements like the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (Cites) were enforced at the national level.
“The entire cactus family is covered by Cites, so trading of the species is permitted but requires a permission. In some of the nations where the species is found, this needs to be enforced “She spoke.
“Since these plants are frequently not intended for worldwide markets, another thing that would greatly help them is to increase awareness of the value of sustainable harvesting. They are only used for local trade, thus it is important for many local people to know how to harvest them and whether they should harvest them at all.”
Why is cactus good for the environment?
In hot regions, cacti frequently serve as “nurse plants,” providing shade and occasionally nutrients that aid in the establishment of seedlings of other species that might not be able to do so in hot or poor soil.
Cacti purify the air, right?
The peruvian cactus species, Cereus peruvianus, is the one that is typically utilized to absorb this kind of radiation, but it should be noted that not all research have found the same results.
Cacti, on the other hand, are plants that can detoxify interior environments, which are typically full of unseen chemical compounds that most plants can absorb.
The Christmas cactus, also known as the Schlumbergera, lends a special hand in our decorating, especially when its priceless blooms burst into bloom. It will work wonders if we put it in a chemically-contaminated space, but we should keep in mind that it requires more frequent watering than a typical cactus does. It will be enough to watch out for the earth and keep it from drying out.
In particular, it will assist us in removing pollutants like formaldehyde, volatile organic compounds present in agglomerates, plywood, paint, varnish, glue, cosmetics, and tobacco smoke from settings.
In conclusion, cacti are a green investment because of their resilience and minimal water needs. It will be sufficient to water them once a month, and it is essential to let plenty of natural light enter them. The truth is that the bigger they are, the more resilient they are; nevertheless, if we take good care of the young ones, they will also live a long time, and if we give them adequate soil and fertilizer, they will also become bigger.
Cacti and other species mixed together is another fascinating idea. The miniature date palm, fountain palm, ivy, tape, and ficus are some of the most decontaminating plants.
All plants have the ability to purify the air, however some are more efficient than others. It depends on their capacity to metabolically decompose the airborne poisons into organic materials that they can consume.
We shall thus obtain a more or less healthy environment as a result of its more or lesser absorption. Because of this, choose the proper plants is crucial if we want to purify the air.
When it comes to decorating and creating a cleaner atmosphere that meets our needs, the secret is to choose a variety of plants that combine a lot of traits. Let’s not squander time thoroughly recording the types of pollution we have at home and the animals that could perform the task more effectively.
Exactly why shouldn’t we maintain cacti?

Can cacti combat climate change?
The fate of the climate and humanity will depend on how we address desertification. The ITOCO Cactus Farms are the most significant global solution for tackling dry lands and climate change. Solutions are crucial. The balance of nature and lands can be restored by ITOCO Cactus Farms.
Our goal is to farm the nopal cactus in order to bring nature back into balance and offer people all around the world a sustainable way of life. Businesses are looking for methods to cut CO2 and stop climate change. Others are coming up with creative solutions while some are investing in carbon credits. Governments are seeking for ways to renovate lands and turn them into 360 circular economies that are profitable. The ITOCO Nopal Cactus Farms achieves each of these goals. (ITOCO.net)
REHABILITATING UNPRODUCTIVE ARID LAND INTO AN OASIS
The problem facing humanity as a whole right now is unparalleled. The objective is to eliminate hazardous emissions from the atmosphere and prevent climate change from causing irreparable harm while restoring the balance of nature to its original state.
Large-scale land renovation is a crucial part of the solution to that problem. Imagine a future where deserts and unproductive land are transformed into lush oases teeming with plant and animal life; a world where land rehabilitation gives us new hope for a way to combat climate change. Imagine the government and business community working together to create a circular economy that promises to benefit both the environment and the general public. (ITOCO.net)
THE NATURAL CO2 CARBON CAPTURE NET NEGATIVE SOLUTION
Advanced firms and governments will work to promote the decrease of CO2 emissions and will seek to create global economies of scale that are healthy and safe for all people.
We all agree that the moment for change is now as we observe the increase in global temperatures and the devastation that wild storms, fires, and floods are doing on the planet.
The global climate catastrophes are more catastrophic than anything we have ever seen, and we have no control over them.
ACHIEVE NET-ZERO AND REMOVE CARBON PERMANENTLY
From a biological perspective, we are aware that plants and trees can help us reduce carbon dioxide emissions and keep global warming below 1.5 degrees Celsius.
A option that will be widely adopted is reforestation, but it has its challenges because it needs a lot of water and surface area to grow. With some trees and plants, C02 removal isn’t assured since when they die, they emit C02 back into the atmosphere.
Scientists and others had to come up with novel and inventive solutions because there wasn’t an obvious option for carbon capture and storage. Amazingly, growing the Nopal Cactus and land renovation provided the solution.
Cactus thrives in the desert because there is so much open space there. They have a special ability to trap carbon and permanently store it underground, and they only need a small amount of water. That finding altered the course of events.
REACHING NET-ZERO
The Nopal Cactus is one of many succulents that are excellent at absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Mother Nature has created it to simultaneously photosynthesize and decarbonize the atmosphere.
When the sun is at its lowest point at night, the cactus opens to conserve its water supply. A cactus plant’s leaf features a series of tiny openings called stomata on the underside. These openings can be observed under a microscope as carbon dioxide is inhaled and transformed during the photosynthesis process.
The Nopal Cactus is essentially a highly developed CO2-sucking plant. Every night, it pulls carbon out of the atmosphere and uses it for photosynthesis. And if that weren’t mystical enough, unlike trees and other plants, cacti do not release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere when they die. The Nopal Cactus’s root system stores carbon underground.
The Nopal Cactus remedy is safe, natural, and non-evasive. The answer of cactus farming is the road to a carbon net-negative economy. (ITOCO.net)
ITOCO: DEVELOPERS OF THE 360 CACTUS ECONOMY
Visionary firm ITOCO set out to establish a sustainable carbon sequestration farm in Mexico after realizing the Nopal Cactus’ negative environmental effects.
The ITOCO Cactus Farm makes a lot of money. It demonstrates that dry places can grow crops that reduce carbon emissions and offer a circular economy where everyone benefits.
ITOCO carefully set up farms of the quickly expanding nopal cactus to show how quickly arid land might be restored. The Nopal Cactus farm reduces air pollution by removing harmful emissions while also providing fruit, jobs, and other benefits to the neighborhood.
The future lies in ITOCO’s sustainable cactus farming project and its capacity to transform vast landmasses into fruitful ecosystems. Consider the opportunities. Consider underutilized areas with extreme temperatures, deserts, and wastelands.
ITOCO: WORLD LEADER IN CARBON SEQUESTRATION
The Nopal rehabilitation farm gives arid and semi-arid areas fresh hope by developing and implementing climate-smart agriculture. It helps the local populace who might otherwise be having a hard time adjusting to their new environment.
With the Nopal smart-climate agricultural initiative, there is a chance for healthy individuals, communities, and economies all in one. This endeavor exemplifies a 360-Cactus economy.
ITOCO is currently one of the world’s most inventive carbon sequestration businesses. After working with over 10,000 farmers across tens of thousands of hectares of land, ITOCO’s Nopal Cactus production is now providing customers in multiple Mexican states with organic fertilizer and renewable energy generation.
The ITOCO team raised crop production from 150 tons per hectare to 600-900 tons per hectare per year through a hybridization procedure, careful genetic selection of more than 15 species of cactus, and six years of fieldwork. This outcome indicates exponential carbon sequestration and atmospheric carbon removal.
“We believe we have one of the most affordable and environmentally benign ways to rebuild arid and desert environments,” says ITOCO President and Visionary Michael Paul. Our techniques don’t necessitate significant investments in power production, infrastructure, groundwater pumping, or desalination (energy). We can practically start growing profitable crops right away. We provide a sustainable CO2 Credit exchange option to nations with arid climates all over the world. This initiative promotes carbon sequestration, sustainable agriculture, biodiversity preservation, clean energy production, social security, food security, employment, and reforestation. This project benefits all parties involved in a win-win manner. (ITOCO.net)
ITOCO AT COP 26 CLIMATE CHANGE CONFERENCE
The Cactus Economy was recently discussed by ITOCO Director Teresa Tattersfield at COP 26, the yearly United Nations Climate Change Conference held in Glasgow, UK. ITOCO will use a natural source of carbon reduction that will also rehabilitate parched regions of the continent and offer a sustainable circular living solution, while Europe is vigorously adopting carbon reduction programs.
By 2030, Mexico will take steps to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions in accordance with the United Nations Land Use Protocol after endorsing the Paris Agreement, which was adopted at the twenty-first session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
The ITOCO Program in Mexico has shown that nopal cactus farming innovations take advantage of the plant’s exceptional ability to adapt to dry and desert terrain and deliver carbon credits at a rapid rate in less than a year. Both our environment and humanity benefit from it.
GOVERNMENT & CORPORATE OPPORTUNITY: REACH SUSTAINABLE GOALS
Since there are already over 7 billion people on the earth and an estimated 9 billion by the year 2030, we are using more energy, food, and resources than the planet can sustain. Our ability to innovate, operate more efficiently, reuse, and sustainably recreate the world’s resources will determine our destiny.
An opportunity for healthy individuals, communities, and economies is presented by the Nopal smart refurbishment initiative. It genuinely operates like a Nopa Cactus economy. A natural government and business endeavor, the nopal cactus program will benefit communities for many years to come.
REASONS WHY THE NOPAL FARMING SOLUTION MAKES SMART BUSINESS SENSE
The Nopal Cactus concept makes sound financial sense for environmentally conscious governments, businesses, and investors.
- There is no need for arid areas of the earth to vanish. With a variety of plants and CO2 collecting vegetation, we can rehabilitate and rebuild great regions.
- In addition to being edible, the nopal cactus has excellent health advantages, grows fruit, and is utilized as fertilizer, cattle feed, biofuel, and in various products including cosmetics, alcoholic beverages, culinary additives, and other medicinal variations. People frequently choose to purchase goods from sustainable businesses these days. More than any other product, consumers want to demonstrate a dedication to the local community and the environment; this is an indication of more conscientious times.
- The ability of cactus to offset carbon emissions is thought to be ten times greater than that of tropical rain forests. Up to 30 tons of carbon dioxide can be stored by the nopal cactus per acre per year. In a year, this project produces carbon worth $800,000 per thousand hectares. The Nopal Cactus is frequently cited as having the highest capacity of any plant on Earth to absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
- The nopal cactus acts as a living fence to prevent winds, erosion, and desertification while simultaneously allowing other crops to grow since it helps to contain water and muck.
- With its numerous products and advantageous health effects, the Nopal Cactus is a major global solution for sustainable development, producing a net-negative outcome. (ITOCO.net)
THE ITOCO OPPORTUNITY THAT CAPTURES CARBON AND SUPPORTS COMMUNITIES
According to Michael Paul, “Our concept creates high-quality jobs in underdeveloped communities. It gives residents of distant locations with limited opportunities a good income and jobs. A fantastic byproduct of nopal farming, the special carbon-reducing component of nopal is an outstanding air purifier. We can support the growth of other plants by planting Nopal in specific ways, further bringing green to formerly parched or desert places. Overall, the project is lively.
Governments and major landowners are invited to work with the ITOCO to develop mega-opportunities and infrastructure on underutilized arid areas.
