Spider plants, despite not being particular about lighting, do best in bright light, as they are commonly used as window plants. Because they aren’t picky about the lighting they use, they’ll do fine in partial direct sunlight as well. Make sure your spider plant doesn’t get too much sun you’ll know if the leaves start to burn.
Water: When you first get your new spider plant baby, water it only once in a while rather than once a week. Allowing them to completely dry out between waterings is the greatest rule of thumb. Check the soil with your finger every now and then, and water again when the soil has totally dried out! When your spider plant matures, you’ll notice that you need to water it more frequently.
Temperature: Spider plants enjoy the sun, but they also prefer cool temperatures between 55 and 5 degrees Fahrenheit. They’re more of an indoor plant because they enjoy lower temps, but don’t worry if you put them somewhere a little warmer. Temperatures of 50 degrees Fahrenheit or lower should be avoided.
Toxicity: Although the plant is advertised as non-toxic, it might be detrimental to cats and cause stomach distress and vomiting if consumed.
Pests: Although spider plants are pest-resistant, they are susceptible to several pest infestations. Aphids, mealybugs, Whitefield, and spider mites may all eat your spider plant, but you can keep them at bay by misting them every now and again. If the problem worsens, you can use vinegar-based natural pesticides to get rid of them.
The most prevalent problem with spider plants is that their leaves shrink and turn brown or black at the tips. Overwatering, not underwatering, is the most common problem. Before watering again, make sure the soil is totally dry.
Because spider plants are native to the tropical jungle, they thrive in high humidity. Placing your plant in a more humid environment, such as a bathroom, will help it thrive and avoid brown or black tips.
Repotting: The good news is that spider plants don’t need to be repotted as often as other plants because they grow primarily through their leaves and plantlets. If the root ball of the spider plant rises above the rim of the container, it’s time to repot it. Repotting spider plants is best done in the spring.
Spider plants are the easiest plants to start with if you’re not sure how to propagate a plant. All you have to do now is pot the easy-to-spot plantlets. The spider plant’s plantlets resemble smaller copies of the spider plant. To successfully grow a spider plant, give your newly potted plantlet regular attention.
How do you get rid of bugs on spider plants?
If you’re seeking for strategies to keep pesky soil gnats away from your spider plants, try the following suggestions:
- Overwatering can encourage fungal gnats to lay eggs in damp potting soil. Allow the top 2 to 3 inches (5 to 7.5 cm) of your spider plant to dry if it is afflicted. Any standing water in the drainage tray should always be poured out.
- Repot a spider plant that has been seriously infested into a new container with fresh potting soil. Check for a drainage hole in the container.
- Adult fungus gnats can be caught using yellow sticky traps before they have a chance to lay eggs. Cut the traps into small squares and attach them to wooden or plastic sticks before placing them in the soil. Every few days, change the traps.
- Utilize B-ti (bacillus thuringiensis israelensis). Gnatrol and Mosquito Bits are two products that include the bacterial pesticide, which is different from ordinary Bt. You may need to reapply B-ti every five days or so to maintain control.
- For fungus gnats on spider plants, some people have found that homemade remedies are successful. Fill small jars halfway with vinegar and a drop or two of liquid dish soap, then puncture the lid with many holes (large enough for adult flies to enter). Attracted by the vinegar, the flies fly into the trap and drown.
- Several raw potato slices can also be placed on the soil surface. Check for larvae after four hours by lifting the slices. This approach is more likely to be effective when combined with other fungus gnat control methods.
- If all else fails, spray the soil surface with pyrethrin pesticide. Despite the fact that pyrethrin has a lesser toxicity, it’s still important to use and store the insecticide according to the label’s instructions. Apply the insecticide outside first, then wait a day before bringing the spider plant back inside.
What is eating holes in my spider plant leaves?
Sucking insects pierce microscopic holes in plants to extract the juices. Aphids, squash bugs, and spider mites are examples of sucking insects. Because sucking insects reproduce so quickly, a single application of insecticide is frequently insufficient. A powerful blast with a hose can work effectively to physically knock them away if your plant is sturdy enough.
Slugs and snails will eat your plant leaves as well. Crushed eggshells around your plants, for example, can be used to make the environment less comfortable for them.
What bug is eating my spider plant?
Sticky spider plant leaves indicate that scale, a piercing, sucking bug, has taken up residence on your spider plant, causing it to become sticky. Scales come in a variety of shapes and sizes, and they are always impenetrable to the naked eye until they establish large colonies. A sticky residue is left behind when colonies form on spider plant leaves. Colonies will appear as little brown spots, mainly beneath the sticky spider plant’s leaves. Mealybugs are scale insects that appear like a white, cottony glob.
Honeydew is the chemical that causes spider plants’ sticky leaves. Aphids or spider mites can also induce sticky spider plant leaves. When inspecting the undersides of spider plant leaves for sticky residue, you may be able to tell which pest you’re dealing with.
Can a plant recover from spider mites?
Plants with only a few leaves damaged by mites can recover quickly and without particular care, but those with more extensive damage will grow stressed and require additional care. Ascertain that all plants receive the required amount of light for the variety. Keep the soil moist but not soggy, and feed plants a quick-release fertilizer like Alaska Fish Fertilizer 5-1-1, which provides a nutrient boost right away. Avoid transplanting or making other big modifications to the plant’s habitat until it produces new, healthy leaves.

Spray plants with soap and water
Begin by using ordinary soap and water. If you mix organic liquid soap with warm water and spray it over the damaged plants, it will make the surface of your plants slippery, preventing them from walking on it and eating your plants. Don’t worry, it won’t damage them; it will simply push them to seek nutrition elsewhere.
Bacillus thuringiensis
This is a naturally occurring bacteria in your soil. It contains a protein that is very poisonous to soft pests like caterpillars. Their digestive system will be paralyzed, forcing them to stop eating. It is harmful to caterpillars, but it is perfectly safe for humans, beneficial insects, and animals. Also, don’t be concerned about using it in your garden with produce; simply wash it before eating it.
How do I keep caterpillars from eating my plants naturally?
If you don’t want to spend the money for caterpillar control, you can make your own at home. A molasses solution (1 tablespoon molasses, 1 teaspoon dish soap, and a liter of warm water) or a garlic solution (3 smashed garlic cloves, 1 tablespoon vegetable oil, 1 teaspoon dish soap, and a liter of water) sprayed on plants on a daily basis will keep insects away.
How do I keep green caterpillars from eating my plants?
To begin with, use garden netting to keep butterflies from laying eggs on your vegetables. Later on, there will be no need to pluck the caterpillars or use pesticides. The majority of garden netting is lightweight and may be spread directly on top of the veggies without obstructing their growth.
Should I cut off leaves with holes?
Is it necessary to remove dead leaves? Yes. Remove brown and dead leaves as quickly as possible from your houseplants, but only if they’re more than 50% damaged. By removing these leaves, the remaining healthy foliage receives more nutrition and the plant’s beauty improves.
Chewing Damage
Beetles, caterpillars, earwigs, or slugs may be the culprits if you notice holes or ragged portions of leaves disappearing over time, with a little feeding each night. Look for indications, or evidence, left behind to distinguish between these four.
Caterpillars deposit feces under the leaves or around the injury. The droppings resemble little “pellets.” Webbing is made by some caterpillars. Damage to leaves can range from a few small holes to the complete destruction of the leaf. Cutworm caterpillars eat both stems and leaves at night. During the day, search for curled-up caterpillars among plant stems just beneath the soil surface.
Beetles do not leave droppings as often as other insects, and they often go unnoticed by falling to the ground. They fall in reaction to the movement of leaves as you search for them. Look for indicators such as egg clusters and small larvae under the leaves. Because caterpillars and beetles come in a variety of sizes and kinds in gardens, search up information on the plant that’s being nibbled to see what insect pests are commonly linked with it.
Seedling vegetables, corn silk, and tender fruit can all be damaged by the European earwig, which can be found in New England gardens. They will gnaw holes in the leaves of a variety of vegetable plants. Younger leaves may have holes all over them, while elder leaves have their edges bitten. Earwig bitten leaves give a ragged appearance.
Slugs leave a slimy path behind them as they feed, which dries into a gleaming trail. The slime protects their bodies from drying out, and it often leaves a residue where the slug has crawled.
Look for bugs at dusk or at night with a flashlight to learn more. Many caterpillars, beetles, and earwigs and slugs, in particular, feed at night and hide during the day. In home vegetable gardens, handpicking caterpillars, beetles, and slugs and dumping them into soapy water can be helpful. Use shallow cans baited with fish oil or a drop of bacon grease in vegetable oil to catch earwigs.
Damage Caused by Piercing-sucking Insects
Look for tiny, soft-bodied insects in groups along the stems or under the foliage if you find plants with wilted, drooping leaves or small yellow spots. Aphids, whiteflies, and squash bugs all have mouthparts that look like a tiny straw. They eat by piercing a leaf or stem with their mouthparts and sucking out the nourishing plant liquids. Yellow patches or blotches are left behind by this process. Aphids and whiteflies don’t become much bigger than 1/8″ in length. Look for a sticky substance known as “honeydew” on the leaves beneath or near where they feed. Mold causes this residue to become sooty.
Squash bugs hatch from bronze-colored eggs that are frequently placed in clusters on the squash leaves’ bottom surface. They’re about 1/8″ long at first, grey and squishy, but they grow into brown, hard-shelled adults that are approximately 3/4″ long. Aphids and whiteflies primarily feed in one location, whereas squash bugs travel about the plant, often under the leaves.
Leaf-mining, Root-feeding and Stem-feeding Damage
Leaf miners are identified by winding, tan colored spots on the leaves of spinach, beets, and Swiss chard. These tiny fly larvae tunnel between the leaf surfaces, leaving splotchy trails known as “mines.” If the little white maggot is still active, you can pull off the top surface of a mine and find it. The adult fly deposits its eggs on the surface of a leaf, and the larvae feed by tunneling into the leaf’s juicy interior.
Do your cabbage seedlings appear to be wilting? The cabbage root maggot fly, like the onion maggot and seed corn maggot flies that are related to it, lays eggs in the soil near the host plant (or seed), and the emerging larvae tunnel into the roots or seeds. Broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, radishes, and other cabbage-related plants, as well as onions, vine crops (cucumbers, squash, pumpkins, melons, and gourds), and corn, pea, and bean seeds, are all affected. Adults resemble little houseflies. By feeding and tunneling, the larvae, or maggots, cause the damage. Damage can result in wilting, poor germination, unattractive radishes, and onions that rot.
Cucumber seedlings that wilt, become yellow, and maybe die could be infected with Erwinia tracheiphila, a bacterial wilt disease spread by cucumber beetles. Look for tiny yellow and black striped or black spotted yellow beetles eating on the young leaves of vine crops, measuring 1/4″ long (cucurbits). Massachusetts is home to both the striped and spotted cucumber beetles. Feeding on stems, leaves, and roots, as well as transmission of the wilt disease, are all examples of their devastation. The seedlings with the fewest leaves are the most vulnerable.
You may observe the leaves wilting as the squash plants begin to produce fruit. Look down the stem of the wilted leaf for faeces, also known as “Frass is a term used to describe the sawdust left behind by insects feasting inside the stem. To find the huge, cream-colored caterpillar munching inside the stem, cut a lengthwise split in the stem near the frass. To stimulate roots, remove the caterpillar and cover the damaged area of the stem with several inches of earth. During the day, look for the orange and black adult moth, which flies like a little hummingbird and hovers near squash plants. The moth lays tiny reddish brown eggs on the stems and leaves of plants.
Management Options
Consider how you’ll handle the situation once you’ve identified the source of the damage. You can either let natural enemies to lower the pest population or wash or pluck the pests off the plants by hand, depending on the severity of the damage. Use lightweight row coverings to protect your crops from flies, beetles, and caterpillar-producing butterflies and moths. Row coverings, installed at the time of planting, provide the best protection for seedlings of cabbage family plants and vine crops in many circumstances.
In the vegetable garden, products including Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt), neem (azadarachtin), or spinosad, which are derived from natural substances, can be used to control some beetles and caterpillars. Soft-bodied insects may be deterred and/or killed by insecticidal soaps, neem, and other oil preparations. Insects in their early, immature stages are always more vulnerable to treatment than those in later stages. Carefully read the labels and select a product that is labeled for both the insect and the crop.
Dusk is an excellent time to treat for active pests if you chose to apply a pesticide for three reasons:
