Watering is one of the most common problems with most houseplants, and snake plants are no exception. While they are less sensitive than other plants, overwatering them might create serious problems in the long run.
Snake plants despise wet soil, and over watering will cause their leaf tips to discolor. During the growing season, you should only water your snake plant once or twice a week. Once a month is more than plenty during the colder months. It’s important to get to know your plants because they’re all different in some way.
We recommend picking up your snake plant before and after watering to get an estimate of how much it will weigh when it needs water, in addition to monitoring the wetness at the top of the soil before watering. When doing this, be careful not to injure yourself on the leaf tips; we speak from personal experience!
Inconsistent watering
It’s possible that the browning of your snake plant’s leaf tips is due to uneven watering rather than just too much water. If your plant goes from being wet to bone dry, it can cause serious problems for the root system and plant, resulting in brown tips. Simply follow a precise watering schedule that corresponds to the growing and dormant seasons. A moisture meter is useful for regulating watering and avoiding over- or under-watering.
Too much light
For your Snake Plant, the right amount of sunshine is more vital than you might imagine. They have a reputation for being able to handle anything from direct sunlight to shaded places. However, if your snake plant receives too much direct sunlight, the leaf tips may become brown. To avoid more leaf burn, try moving your plant further away from the window or to a somewhat shadier location. To eliminate the guesswork, use a light meter to ensure that your Snake Plant receives the proper quantity of light.
Overfertilisation
Most generic plant meals and fertilizers will suggest a dosage for your plants, but this is typically too high for your snake plant, causing browning of the leaf tips. It’s advisable to start with half the recommended amount and see how your snake plant responds. If any browning occurs, flush the feed with extra water and try again with a quarter of the dosage the next time you water.
Low humidity
Snake plants prefer wet settings and may suffer in drier environments. This is especially harmful during the winter months, when we frequently use the heater for many hours each day. A lack of humidity in the air can cause the leaf tips to brown, which can spread to the entire leaf. If you have a lot of dry air, spritz your snake plant with a spray bottle once a week or so to keep it from drying out.

Let’s take a look at each area that may require attention in order to boost the health of your plant.
Check To See If It Has Enough Water
The snake plant requires less water than other plants because it is a succulent, yet it can still become too dry. Browning leaves indicate that your plant is dehydrated. To determine how dry your soil has become, you can use a moisture meter or a finger test. If your snake plant is dry, water it. However, between waterings, make sure to let it dry out.
Make Sure The Soil Is Not Too Loosely or Tightly Packed
Because snake plants don’t like too much water, make sure the soil isn’t too compacted. Your soil may be too loose if your plant shows signs of dryness and brown tips. You may always re-pot your snake plant to ensure that it has the correct mix for its roots and requirements.
Feel For Drafts
A draft is another issue that can alter the dryness of your plant. If your snake plant is close to a heating duct or a warm window, the breeze and heat may prematurely dry out the soil. This is a simple repair; simply relocate the plant to a less drafty place and the problem will be resolved. If you find brown tips on your snake plant, search for additional signs that it may require assistance. You may have an insect problem if the leaves are curling or falling. The most common pest to invade a snake plant is thrips, which are tiny black bugs. Shake the plant off and rinse the leaves with a solution of water and mild dish soap to get rid of them. A commercial product can also be used.
Prune Away Any Dead Areas
Now that you’ve figured out what’s wrong with your snake plant, it’s time to bring it back to life. Clip away any dead or dying patches with some sharp pruning snips. Your plant will be able to focus all of its energy on its healthy leaves and grow like crazy as a result.
Should I cut the brown spot off my snake plant?
If it’s absolutely necessary, use slow or liquid fertilizers sparingly. Organic blends or a conventional all-purpose fertilizer are also excellent choices. Use a diluted fertilizer if possible.
Protect the plant from cold damage
Unfortunately, the effects of frigid weather cannot be reversed. If only a small portion of the leaf is impacted, cut it off with a sharp, sterile knife. Cut the leaves off at the base if they’re all mushy. New leaves are likely to emerge if the roots are unaffected.

Why is my snake plant turning brown and wilting?

Although it is necessary to pot your snake plant in a well-draining pot, you also want your plant to look good and add to the attractiveness of your home. You may have some ornamental pots with adequate drainage in which to plant your snake plant, but I prefer to place it on a drip tray or within a more elegant planter. If you catch the problem early enough, you can repot the plant. Remove as much diseased soil as possible before replacing it with new, clean potting soil. To assist avoid reinfection, apply a root treatment with helpful mycorrhizal species or sprinkle the healthy roots with sulfur powder. Sulfur acidifies the soil, making some nutrients less available and limiting the food source for pathogens that cause root rot. If the root rot has progressed far enough, dissect the plant and keep just the healthy parts. Take cuttings from healthy foliage and root them to propagate a new plant if the entire base is compromised.
Prevention
When the top 2-4″ of the soil has completely dried up, water the plants. During the cooler, winter months, when the plant is dormant, this could mean just watering it every 1-2 months.
Snake plants are perfect for the less-than-careful gardener. For weeks at a time, you can go without watering them. Your snake plant will easily endure 3 weeks or more without water, even in hot, arid conditions, so you won’t have to bother about all the methods to water houseplants while on vacation.
Can Brown leaves turn green again?
Underwatering, sunburn, or overwatering are the most common causes of browning leaves.
The soil grew too dry for too long between waterings if the leaf tips are turning brown and crunchy. The plant may also drop leaves as a result of this. Do snake plants need sunlight?
- Plants can grow in a wide range of light conditions, from low to high. They grow faster in brighter light, but direct sunshine, especially when plants are outside, burns leaves. A 10 foot distance from a west or south window is excellent.
- Use a commercial potting soil mixed 50:50 with a cactus and succulent mix when potting snake plants. This results in a loose, quick-draining soil with many air spaces, which should help minimize overwatering.
- Fertilizer: These slow-growing plants don’t require much in the way of fertilizer. Snake plants should be fed any houseplant food twice a year, once in the spring and once in the summer. These plants are low-maintenance.
- Snake plants do well in hot, dry environments. For the summer, consider placing potted ones in bright shade outside. They will flourish in the landscape where there is no frost or snow. Just make sure these plants aren’t invasive in your area by checking with local nurseries.

How do I know if my snake plant is healthy?
Southern blight is a snake plant disease that causes mushy leaves. Sclerotium rolfsii is a fungus that causes this disease.
The fungus can enter the snake plant’s stems, where it consumes the stuff inside.
Before the plant dies, the leaves of your snake plant will become brown and possibly white, and they will feel mushy and soft. This happens when the fungus infects the tissue of your snake plant.
If you don’t take precautionary actions before determining that southern blight is the cause of your snake plant’s squishy leaves, your plant will die within a week.
Measure the Plant’s Height
When you have a baby, you keep an eye on their size to make sure they’re developing normally. Similarly, keeping note of your snake plant’s height over time will help you determine how healthy it is.
A fully mature snake plant leaf can be up to three inches broad and six to eight feet tall when cultivated in a container. You may observe two to four new leaves and three to six inches of fresh height development per season.
If your snake plant isn’t growing at all or isn’t growing as fast as you’d want, you should investigate why.
Many reasons, many of which I’ve already mentioned, can prevent your snake plant from developing as it should.

A lack of sunlight is also a concern. The snake plant is shade-tolerant, and it can even survive in complete darkness if that’s all you have.
It’s vital to remember that plants growing in low light will not develop as quickly or as robustly as those growing in more perfect lighting circumstances.
Review the Leaf Uprightness

Even if you have proper watering habits, if your snake plant doesn’t have enough drainage, its leaves will be anything but upright.
Your snake plant houseplant’s container should ideally have numerous drainage holes, each of which should be large enough to prevent water from becoming trapped in the pot’s bottom.
Water will be trapped in compacted soil. Replace the plant’s soil every few years to avoid this.
The last reason your snake plant’s leaves may be drooping is because of a lack of humidity.
The snake plant does not require high levels of humidity. It prefers a relative humidity of roughly 40%, which is right in the middle of the range for a home or workplace.

Do the Fingertip Test
When it comes to determining whether or not your snake plant is healthy, the fingertip test will be one of your finest indicators. All you have to do is stick your finger into the soil around your plant and feel around.

The roots will die first, followed by signs such as mushiness and leaf discoloration on your plant. The sickness had already advanced quite far by that stage.
Trim away the dead roots, repot your plant in drier settings, and restrict your watering habits going forward to prevent your plant from root rot.
How do you bring a snake plant back to life?
