Why Is My Snake Plant Getting Brown Spots?

Overwatering, bugs, or fungal infections can cause brown tips and patches on snake plants. Allow the top inch of soil to dry between waterings and give the plant indirect light once a week. To get rid of the brown-black patches, treat fungal illnesses and get rid of mealybugs and spider mites.

Brown leaf tips, as you’ll see below, can indicate an issue that’s not the same as what’s generating brown patches all over the plant. As a result, the fixes may differ.

Why does my snake have brown spots?

Anyone who has kept an indoor plant knows how simple fungus may grow, especially if the plant isn’t properly drained. A fungal infection could be the cause of the liquid brown patches on your snake plant, albeit this is a rare occurrence.

The soil’s inability to dry out entirely is one of the key reasons why fungus develops on indoor plants. While snake plants don’t require direct sunshine, you’ll want to make sure they get enough to dry out the soil after watering.

Additionally, repotting your plant into a pot with drainage holes at the bottom can ensure optimum drainage.

Fungus can grow when there is nowhere for extra water to drain. After you’ve watered your snake plant, ensure sure the soil is completely dry.

If your potting mix still does not dry, add some perlite or pumice to aid enhance appropriate drainage. Alternately, try a different type of soil with better drainage and aeration for your roots.

Can you cut brown spots off snake plant?

Anorexia can also be a symptom of a deeper environmental issue, such as an insufficient light cycle, a poor diet, improperly sized food items, or, most typically, the stress of a new or changing environment.

Infectious stomatitis (“mouth rot”), internal parasites, gastrointestinal blockage (impaction), intestinal infections, lung sickness, kidney or liver failure, malignancies, or gout are some of the diseases or other conditions that cause anorexia. To diagnose the reason of a snake’s anorexia, your veterinarian will need to conduct a comprehensive physical examination and run laboratory testing. It can be difficult to persuade an anorexic snake to eat again, but it is most successful when the underlying reason of anorexia is recognized and cured.

Salmonella

While turtles are frequently blamed for transferring Salmonella to their owners, any reptile, including snakes, can carry the bacteria as part of their natural gut bacterial ecology. Salmonella can cause severe gastrointestinal illness or septicemia, which can be fatal (blood infection). Many animals and people contain these germs without displaying any clinical symptoms, but they shed the bacteria in their feces and can infect others.

Proper cleanliness is the greatest method to avoid difficulties with this condition. When the snake’s cage becomes filthy, thoroughly clean and disinfect it. At least once a week, disinfect the entire cage by rinsing it thoroughly after using cleaning chemicals. Above all, carefully wash and disinfect your hands after handling, feeding, or cleaning your snake’s cage.

Because most snakes carrying Salmonella do not become ill, they normally do not require treatment.

Abnormal swellings and masses

Snakes frequently acquire lumps and bumps on their skin and throughout their body. These abnormal swellings and masses can be caused by a variety of disorders. Infection (usually referred to as abscesses), tumors, or parasites can all create external lumps. Organ growth (as in renal disease or parasite infections of the stomach), retained eggs in snakes that lay eggs, tumors, or even constipation can produce internal swellings. A lump is sometimes merely the leftovers of a snake’s meal.

To diagnose the cause of a specific swelling, your veterinarian may need to do certain tests (X-rays, aspirates, blood tests). Once the source of the swelling has been identified, your veterinarian will decide if medication or surgical treatment is the best option. Some lumps and bumps are harmless and pose no threat to your snake’s life. Others may indicate the presence of a more serious illness. The sooner your snake is examined in these situations, the better.

Difficulty shedding

Like an inverted sock, a healthy, well-cared-for snake will lose its skin in one piece (ecdysis). The frequency with which the snake sheds depends on its age, growth rate, and nutritional health. A snake that is young, healthy, and well-fed will shed more frequently (perhaps every month). Shedding begins with a slight dulling of skin color across the body, followed by the eyes turning a foggy, blue/grey color over many days. The skin then brightens, and the eyes clean up and return to their previous state. Snakes should be handled with extreme caution throughout these stages, since their skin is delicate and easily harmed. Finally, the snake seeks out a rough surface to rub against, and as it rubs, the old skin sheds from head to tail. The full procedure can take anything from 7 to 14 days.

Some snakes have a hard time shedding or shed incorrectly (dysecdysis). Dysecdysis is a symptom of an underlying problem, which most typically involves husbandry and management, such as incorrect ambient temperatures or humidity levels, and/or inadequate nutrition. The snake with retained eyewear is of particular concern (eye caps). The eyelid surfaces should be shed at the same time as the skin. Always inspect the shed skin to see if the spectacles have come off with the rest. If they don’t shed, your veterinarian should be consulted to determine the best course of action for your snake. Retaining spectacles for a long time can cause irreversible eye damage and blindness.

Shedding issues (retained skin and eye caps) are frequently treated by increasing the humidity in the snake’s surroundings, which aids in the snake’s ability to shed the retained skin. It is vital to provide a sufficient amount of rough surfaces, such as logs or rocks, on which the snake can rub to start the shed. To avoid irreparable damage to your pet snake, get guidance from your veterinarian regarding various methods, such as soaking or spraying the snake, to promote humidity and aid in the shedding of retained skin and eye caps.

Burns

Burns are all too common in snakes kept as pets. They happen when an animal, in its natural search for a warm area to rest, either finds or stays in a hot spot for too long. If the snake has access to exposed heat lamps, light bulbs, or electric “hot rocks” or “sizzle stones” in the cage, this can happen. It could also happen if your snake gets loose and sits on a radiator, baseboard heater, light bulb, or other exposed heat source. Snakes, in general, do not perceive when they are too hot when they come into contact with hot surfaces, and as a result, they are regularly burned, with some burns being serious. The snake’s scales will darken, turning dark brown or black, with less severe burns; in more serious situations, blisters or deep tissue injury will emerge. These animals require emergency medical attention.

Bites and wounds

Most snake owners are astonished to find that even a small, scared mouse provided as prey to a snake to eat can bite the snake severely and cause life-threatening harm if the snake isn’t hungry. Prey-inflicted wounds on reptiles require rapid veterinarian attention. Uneaten prey left in a cage with a well-fed snake can sometimes bite through the skin and muscles all the way down to the ribs and backbone, causing irreversible or life-threatening damage. As a result, in addition to humane considerations about live prey, snakes should only be served dead prey (freshly killed or frozen and thawed). Live prey should never be offered to a snake because it poses too much of a risk of injury to the snake. Most pet snakes can be taught to eat dead prey, especially if they are hungry and the prey is still warm after being killed.

Injuries

Unfortunately, a snake kept in prison may repeatedly try to escape by pressing its nose or the front of its face against cage lids, tank glass, or enclosure wire in search of a way out. Nasal or face injuries can range from mild skin and scale damage to significant, full-thickness ulceration, which can result in disfiguring abnormalities of the nose and front of the mouth that make breathing and feeding difficult. Preventing this issue is difficult. If your snake persists in attempting to flee, provide it with safe hiding places and a variety of climbing structures, as well as a visual barrier, such as a coat of dark-colored paint, a strip of duct tape, or a decorative facade, on the outer surface of the tank walls or the top of the enclosure, to deter the snake from attempting to escape.

Snake plants are so tough that they can withstand droughts and a variety of other difficulties, therefore they don’t mind being in direct sunshine. Although snake plants can withstand direct sunshine, they prefer indirect light. Snake plants are prone to leaf burn when exposed to direct sunshine.

Your snake plant will alert you if it receives too much light. If the leaves of your snake plant start to turn odd colors, such as yellow, brown, or pale, move it away from the light source.

Heat, as well as overexposure to light, can result in leaf burn. Similarly, if you see your snake plant is turning pale, move it away from the light. Overexposure to light in general, not just direct light, is a common cause of pallor.

Do not be alarmed if your snake plant suffers leaf burn. Snake plants are tough and resilient, recovering swiftly from nearly any harm. Leaf burn will only cause long-term damage in extreme circumstances. Similarly, your snake plant will not be killed by these conditions.

What does a dying snake plant look like?

Root rot, which is caused by overwatering, is the most common problem with Snake Plants, especially during the winter months. The roots then die back due to a lack of oxygen or a soil fungus overgrowth. Soggy soils promote the growth and reproduction of Pythium, Phytophthora, Rhizoctonia, and Fusarium fungi, which attack plants by spreading into the roots. As healthy roots die, they turn dark and mushy, unable to absorb the nutrients required for growth.

Root rot is difficult to detect since it develops beneath the soil surface and out of sight. Root rot can kill an entire plant in 10 days if the conditions are ideal, such as in pots without drainage holes.

Although it is necessary to pot your snake plant in a well-draining pot, you also want your plant to look good and add to the attractiveness of your home. You may have some ornamental pots with adequate drainage in which to plant your snake plant, but I prefer to place it on a drip tray or within a more elegant planter. Symptoms

The rot is first visible on the roots, causing them to turn dark and mushy, which are classic indicators of rot. Root rot causes leaves to turn yellow, wilt, or droop, and eventually become mushy. Once symptoms appear in the leaves, the condition may be beyond repair, putting the entire plant in jeopardy.

Treatment

If you catch the problem early enough, you can repot the plant. Remove as much diseased soil as possible before replacing it with new, clean potting soil. To assist avoid reinfection, apply a root treatment with helpful mycorrhizal species or sprinkle the healthy roots with sulfur powder. Sulfur acidifies the soil, making some nutrients less available and limiting the food source for pathogens that cause root rot. If the root rot has progressed far enough, dissect the plant and keep just the healthy parts. Take cuttings from healthy foliage and root them to propagate a new plant if the entire base is compromised.

Prevention

When the top 2-4″ of the soil has completely dried up, water the plants. During the cooler, winter months, when the plant is dormant, this could mean just watering it every 1-2 months.

Snake plants are perfect for the less-than-careful gardener. For weeks at a time, you can go without watering them. Your snake plant will easily endure 3 weeks or more without water, even in hot, arid conditions, so you won’t have to bother about all the methods to water houseplants while on vacation.
